5.0 out of 5 starsValue, Reliability and Versatility
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2017
FYI: See bottom of this for some "hidden" features. I have also included info about use cases and my general feelings about the device below my initial review of the Rii itself. TL;DR: it's a great device and if you're looking at devices similar to this and don't want to spend a fortune, you will be pleased by the Rii 8+. I watched numerous YouTube reviews of this device before purchasing, and that may help you decide if it's right for you.

I was looking for the perfect device that can fill three functions: be used as a media center remote, have the ability to function as mouse and keyboard for my Raspberry Pi, and be able to be used as a mobile mouse and keyboard for remote job locations to be used on Windows/Linux Servers, Android Devices, and other machines which often don't have a full keyboard and mouse or any inputs at all.

It fills all three and I LOVE IT. I heard the Rii 8+ was really light and by golly it is at only 3.2 ounces. Many times, this means the build quality is skimpy or the product will not hold up to daily use an abuse. I'm a guy who uses a mechanical keyboard that weighs 8 pounds, so I like some heft in my electronics! That also means I generally despise rubber dome keys. The keys on the Rii 8+, however, have great push down force and both and audible and physical click. You will know that you pushed a button on this, unlike some cheap TV / media remotes with squishy keys.

I have found the Rii to be surprisingly robust. While I wouldn't recommend intentionally trying to snap it in half, I do think it will hold up to general use very well. If you're going to tote it around with you all the time to use on the job, a small case might be nice to prevent it from getting scratched up or to prevent keys from being pressed, but I don't think that it's mandatory. The lightweight of the device also means that dropping it is not as injurious as it might be to a device with more weight. It weighs less than my SmartPhone!

The Rii 8+ just plugs in and WORKS, which also makes it perfect for Raspberry Pi enthusiasts like myself. That was one reason I purchased this: to use as a portable keyboard for my Raspberry Pi. So, does it work for the Pi 3+? IT WORKS AMAZINGLY WELL. Even though I have a 7 inch touch screen for my Pi, this device is so much more pleasant to use on Rasbian. Best of all, it means that when I go out to work on PCs, Servers, Linux Desktops and other devices that I can just bring this along since it works on everything I've tried it with. The primary barrier to this not working on a device is going to be the fault of the device not support USB Wireless HID, NOT because of the Rii 8+.

A word about Smart TVs: If you have a Smart TV that this doesn't work on, it's not the Rii's fault. It's your Smart TV. Keeping input proprietary is a huge problem with such devices because some Smart TV manufacturers want you to use "approved" input devices, despite most sporting fully fledged Linux / Android / Windows Operating Systems beneath the veneer of the Smart TV application. That, and they skimp on universal drivers to to save a few megabytes of storage. If a Raspberry Pi can run this, your Smart TV should be able to as well. If it doesn't, complain to the manufacturer, not the builders of the Rii.

Now for some handy features that didn't pop at at first glance:

1) Function Key* + F8 = Turns off click input from Touch Pad

2) Function Key + Swipe Up/Down on Touch Pad = Scroll Up/Down

3) Function + Space bar = Adjust DPI / sensitivity of touch pad

4) Function + Enter = Sends Ctrl+Alt+Del signal

5) The Rii 8+ uses standard mouse and keyboard drivers. So if you wanted to remap keys, you can easily do so using any software that is able to do so. Just make sure the software is able to discriminate between multiple input devices so that it knows the key press on the Rii and your regular keyboard are different.

3.0 out of 5 stars3 solid stars - good utility, stable, has more potential though
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018
I got this unit to work with several devices: PS3, FireTV Stick, Raspberry Pi, Win 10 PC. So far, I've tested it with PS3 and Fire TV. On PS3, the device is OK. I did not have the experience I was expecting because the mapping of keys from the PS3 controller to the Rii was not immediately clear. More importantly, technically, I had dificulty paring the device to the PS3 and when it did pair on EVERY use, the PS3 became unresponsive after about 3 or 4 minutes and had to be power cycled. For me, this is not an acceptable application for this item.

As for the Fire TV, the Rii pairs quickly and worked as expected once I figured out how to navigate. Some apps or the Fire OS give hints on the screen as to which key to press for certain actions. For example Esc is used for the Back function. I haven't yet determined which key corresponds to the Menu key on the Fire TV remote. In my opinion, this device is indispensable for using Firefox, or Silk browsers, although, driving the circular cursor takes some getting used to, and it got lost and became unresponsive a couple of time while using Firefox.I have not figured that out. It's not that big of a problem, though obviously the experience would be better without this particular feature.

I will update my review wafter I try it on the Pi and PC.

About the unit. Overall, I like the device, but just middling.
What I like:
1) Multi platform application. I can use it on several devices.
2) Works as expected in most cases.
3) Has a good feel to it in terms of materials although, I'm not sure how durable it is. I purchased a protection plan just in case-not sure if it will cover what might go wrong.
4) So far, except for PS3, it has been stable, no connection issues.
5) I like the power saving feature; it's similar to that of the PS3 controller and cuts down on inconvenient charging cycles. Since I'm used to reconnecting the PS3 controller, the short delay to wake up the Rii is not a problem.

Those extra stars could be gained by improving the item in several areas:
1) Higher quality manufacturing process, including inspection and testing. My unit's backlighting is fair at best, being uneven, getting dimmer from left to right. The backlight on the arrow key cluster does not shine through the "slits" on the right side of the rubberized material covering the Up Arrow and Right Arrow keys. There is enough light leakage to illuminate the keys. It seems a relatively simple test could assure unifrom backlighting. I would classify this as an annoyance that separates a good experience from a great one. I will continue to use the item, but may return it for this reason.
2) The device could use some extra mass to give it it a heftier feel. I would prefer that it be slightly larger.
3) The packaging could include a more documentation that explains how to use the device in various applications and that also explains the key labels, especially, the Fn key combinations.
4) The BT dongle is poorly manufactured. I could not get it t fit in any USB port without feeling like I was forcing it. This is not a deal breaker for me because all the devices on which I would use the device BT (Bluetooth, sorry) equipped.
5) Touchpad could be larger.

3 solid stars with potential for 4, maybe 5 with some improvements.

1.0 out of 5 stars TWO JUNKERS FROM RII
Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2016

Do not buy this unless the shipment is serviced by Amazon. These items are too risky in quality. I had three of the ESKY branded mini i8 remotes (older version). They all worked almost flawlessly for what they were. There were no reception issues. Over time my dog ate two of them. The third one had an issue almost a year after the purchase. The battery stopped charging. I charged it fully the day it was received without any trouble. It ran fine without needing a new charge for literally a few months. Then when it finally died I swapped in the partially charged batteries from the other models the dog ate. This, in my mind, is the advantage of the removable battery. When the third battery was finally depleted and it wouldn't charge, I just tossed it after a bit of troubleshooting. These things are cheap enough.

Now back to Rii. Before purchasing the third ESKY i8, Rii undercut the price by a few dollars in the same ESKY advertisement, and the purchase therefore defaulted to them. I had nothing but issues with the received Rii i8 and sent it back as not working, I was really pissed since it was not what I ordered. The thing literally would not work even with the remote only a few inches from the receiver. The inputs to the screen were all over the place, key inputs were not made, and other key inputs would sent a stream of letters across the screen that need to be deleted. This is not the button sticking, but if a button is pressed and the remote loses connection to the receiver, the result is as if you are holding down the key until the connection is re-established.

After my third ESKY remote needed replacing, I came back to Amazon looking for another of the same model. Unfortunately it seems to be gone. I saw this new version from Rii, the i8+. I figured for $20-ish I'd give them another shot. The back-light feature is nice, but honestly I never really NEEDED it with the other models. The light from the screen in the living room from the TV is plenty, and I sit on the couch about 15 feet from the TV. I do think you're losing a feature with the internal, non-serviceable battery, even though they pitch it as a new feature. Look and feel is just about the same as the older i8. The textured backing is really a don't care for me. When I received this new i8+ from Rii, I let it sit and charge fully. When attempting to use it, I immediately had the same problems with the Rii i8 I sent back previously. Same crappy connection, to the point that the thing is not usable and just frustrates you when trying to do simple tasks like type the name of a movie or TV show. Once again I sent the Rii back as junk. The key here is to be sure to buy something serviced by Amazon. The no-hassle return and refund is VERY important when purchasing these things.
I still need a remote and am trying this next: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KF9IVKC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00
I did at least read one honest review from someone who said they had nothing but issues with the Rii i8+ and their replacement iPazzPort model works just great. Mine is in the mail and my fingers are crossed...

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible - Trackpad is Useless, Backlight is Uneven; Worse Than The 2015 Version
Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024

The media could not be loaded.
I have been using my original Rii keyboard for years, and it has never let me down. It was one of the best purchases I've made. However; this new one is worse than the one I've been using for almost 10 years!

The new one's trackpad is almost useless. I tried using different fingers, dampening the finger, and even using a digital stylus. It simply is unusable.

If you watch my video, you can see the difference in response (using the new one via Bluetooth, and the old one using it's dongle).

I even tried using the USB dongle enclosed in the new one's case, but it was even worse. ..

The backlight is also very uneven. Which is something I could deal with if the new one had better range and responsiveness than the one that is nearly 10 years old.

Don't be fooled by positive reviews; the quality of their product has declined immensely over time.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOPE, BAD SELLER
Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2016

My gf and I got each other these for Christmas. I was excited and am subsequently extremely embarrassed about having to return them (since it was my suggestion). The charging light on mine never shut off even after 6-8 hours night. Seeing its capacity is 300mA, I knew that was screwed up. I used it maybe half an hour and fell asleep. It was dead when I woke up. I charged it ALL DAY again, and now it's the worst connectivity I've ever seen. I'm literally within arm's reach of my tower, and it's sitting here blinking its little yellow light trying to pair up. Then it does for maybe 10 seconds where I can move the mouse with the trackpad normally for 5 seconds, then INCREDIBLY slowly/laggy before it has to attempt to pair again. If I sit on the couch across the room FORGET IT, absolutely NO CONNECTIVITY. I might get 30 seconds every now and again where I can use the mouse, but mostly it's just stationary as I'm tracking my fingertip into oblivion on the trackpad.

Seeing the rest of the 1-star reviews on this product under this listing, I can see that most of them have the same issue. I even factory reset it (which this listing took the time to illustrate how to do in the description - probably should have been a warning sign. "most of the issues that people are having can be solved by..." means people are having plenty of issues) This is LITERALLY THE ONLY FUNCTION OF THE PRODUCT - to connect wirelessly to your computer and control it. It can do neither for me. 0/10 - stay away from this product. The $10 air mouse I had before this worked MUCH better, and I'll be ordering another one of those. Good riddance.

*Edit* after returning my dysfunctional remote, my gf ordered another one (surprisingly since what had happened) and it seems to be working okay. I am typing with it currently. I still don change my review stars because it was such a hassle. Obviously with all the other 1 star reviews about the same thing, there are quality control issues here. To me, buying from one brand over another brand is completely down to quality and reliability, and with this experience, I am not sure how I feel about Rii. This remote is decent, but there are many just like it from other sellers that might have not had these problems. I mean 14% is a lot of 1 star reviews for a product. Not normally distributed, that's for sure. It appears some work just fine, but be prepared to return for another since quality control seems to be lacking here.

1.0 out of 5 stars I Come from the future to tell you not buy this keyboard!
Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2019

I brought this product to go with the entertainment computer I am building. I was most excited for the backlit keyboard function (along with the fact that it came in blue which is my favorite color). When the item arrived in the mail I tried to set it up immediately and, after a very long time, I was able to get it to pair with my Linux computer. (More on this later).

However, after using it for a few minutes I began to realize that the keyboard had a very strong odor. Growing up in the early 90s I, unfortunately, owned a few lead toys before they were completely phased out. So I know what lead smells like, and I also know that anything with even the hint of lead must be avoided like the plague. Okay, so I am not %100 sure that lead paint was used for this particular product. But the smell of the keyboard led me to the strong suspicion that either lead or something toxic was used to make it the metallic blue product that I received in the mail. More, the strength of the smell was overwhelming and I quickly found myself feeling lightheaded and nauseous over the course of the hour of me trying to get the damn thing to work right.

This brings me to the second issue with this product, its range, which is garbage. The product states that the range is 15 meters, however, I can assure you that the effective range of the keyboard I received was a mere 2 meters (and I am actually being generous). My entertainment computer sits at the foot of my couch--Not far away in the slightest!--and the signal from the keyboard (measured using a Linux application was barely registering on the scale. I literally had to hold the keyboard next to my Bluetooth antenna to get it to work, and even then it barely wanted to register, let alone move.

This brings me to the third and final issue with this keyboard. It was missing the Bluetooth adapter. I figured that maybe the adapter that came built into my computer was incompatible or non-optimal for the keyboard so I was going to test the included adapter. To my shock, when I pulled off the back cover of the adapters housing there was no Bluetooth to be found.

This product is no good and fails at every single juncture, catastrophically, to the point where it has no redeeming qualities. DO NOT BUY THIS, TRUST ME! Spend a little bit more money on something a little bit nicer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Acts like a plastic box with two functional lights. It never did anything else.

I have an iPazzport I bought a while back that I've used with multiple devices, no issues.

Now I get this thing in the mail a couple days ago, and nothing will work with it.
For full disclosure, I can occasionally get my laptop to detect a wireless keyboard, but that's the extent of it.
It never pairs, and doesn't do anything like the online manual says it should.
Like attempting to rule out signal interference: Hold F1, turn on keyboard and immediately let go of F1, plug in USB receiver.
None of the lights do what it claims they should be doing.

Save yourself the headache.

**update**
I disassembled the device and found that a chip on the board had a white substance bridging four of its 32 connections. I've seen this type of corrosion in electronic circuits before.

Perhaps unrelated, but the bottom of each of the four screws that hold the casing together had a similar white coating. (You'll need a small torx driver to remove these, I think they were T4 or T5.)

I tried to clean the material off of the affected IC pins and board, but I was not very effective. This chip is pretty small, leaving little space to clean between and behind each pin.
(I couldn't even read the text on the chip without a magnifying glass and holding it at *just* The right angle.)

It appears to be an IC which incorporates a MOSFET power amplifier, though I could not find an exact match on the internet from the text I recorded:
TK208 15BBAJB31 00x3

Some of that may be incorrect, as it was very difficult to discern each character, especially the "00x3" portion.

Though on the board itself, the entire IC appears to be designated as "U10".

This info won't be of much practical use to the customers, however I think it may be indicative of some issues in manufacturing or storing these units.

I order a Bluetooth remote control. The remote control came to me with a Bluetooth button. I was connecting with the Bluetooth for a while. It stopped working and low and behold, they came with dongles. So I started using the dongle to connect through the 2.4 gigahertz. and it works most of the time. They are advertising a Bluetooth RII 8. mini keyboard and it's not Working I have the The red and the green version and they both are acting up the same way. They both came with dongles. 2 Gigahertz for connecting they will but after awhile they stop working. I need a phone call or an email from their owners or the manufacturers of these keyboards because they advertisee something that's false and I'm ready to go to the FTC federal trade Commission on this because I have an older version of your RII 8 black version that works specifically for the Bluetooth and I work straight.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great design, but both RF and BT versions have serious connection issues!
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2016

Hooked this little baby up to my MPC. Distance about 10 feet from TV. I bought the RF version of this keyboard and then returned it after one week (see below for reasons) and then I bought the Bluetooth version hoping the connectivity issues would be gone with BT. Sadly, I ended up returning that as well after four days. Read on....

PROS:
1. Great keyboard layout with full set of Function keys and true mouse left and right click buttons.
2, Trackpad is full function with tap-to-click as well as two finger scrolling.
3. Best backlight I've seen in a mini-keyboard. Every key is illuminated clearly. Easy to turn backlight on and off, and when it's on it stays lit with no need to keep tapping a key to turn it back on.
4. Great texture (grippy, non-slip) and key press feedback with clear key action. You know when a key press has been received.
5. Lightweight and easy to hold.

CONS:
1. The RF version constantly loses connectivity with USB receiver. This is super frustrating. Right in the middle of doing something the amber LED starts blinking and the remote is no longer connected. Perhaps 2.4 Mhz is just too crowded in a home environment
2. The BT version stays connected (solid blue LED) but the trackpad simply stopped working. The keyboard still works, but not the trackpad, so unable to move the cursor.

I had high hopes and I do love the design... lightweight and full featured. Now if it would only just keep on working :-(

1.0 out of 5 stars Once powered on it connects right away and works for a good 15 to 30 seconds then disconnects
Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2017

Product arrived really quick. Other than that, these are the issues that I am having with it.

I purchased the blue one. Based on the picture of the color it is a light almost metallic blue. What I got on the other hand was a very dark deep blue. The color to be honest is not to big of an issue for me.

My main issue is the connection. I went through all of the reviews and based on researching I found that I needed a Bluetooth keyboard that did not need a dongle to connect as I have a 'dumb' TV with a fire stick running kodi. The reviews showed that this was the one for me. After receiving the package and following the directions to connect the device it was able to connect...and then disconnect. This is now the cycle. Once powered on it connects right away and works for a good 15 to 30 seconds then disconnects. Also after Everytime that I have to turn the remote off the backlight function resets and if I want it to be back in the on setting then I have to hold it every single time.

I'm sure that this works for a computer or smart TV but when it comes to a fire stick you should look somewhere else.

This could be an amazing keyboard, IF it would connect to it's adapter. After receiving this item I immediately hooked it up to my new Kodi box to put it to use, but after 10 mins of playing around with it I absolutely could not get it to connect. I then put it's adapter into my laptop and tried that. Exact same issue. I tried everything I could to get it to connect but it still wouldn't work. Finally, I decided to use my laptops Bluetooth to connect to the keyboard directly and it worked like a champ. Like I said, would be an awesome little keyboard IF it connected to its adapter. I would keep it if my Kodi box had Bluetooth that I could use to connect the keyboard too but it does not. I contacted the seller, who is awesome by the way, and they immediately sent me a replacement adapter. Unfortunately, that ended with the exact same result. I have to love the seller, Cybervision Electronics, because in their e-mail to me they literally wrote that "Unfortunately the manufacturer has not provided us with a quality product in regards to the Bluetooth adapter." I love it because it's direct and honest and no bs. So to sum it all up, the seller is great but the product is a colossal waste of time!

1.0 out of 5 stars (Bluetooth Version) won't pair with Mac or iPhone - will pair with AppleTV 4 but doesn't work
Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2020

I purchased this because I got tired of using the native remote for my Apple TV when searching and therefore needing to be able to type in search terms on the Apple TV. It pairs easily with the AppleTV 4. The arrow keys work for navigating around the Home screen from app to app. The touch screen works - though unreliable.

But when I go to search and enter search terms, the arrow keys don't work to navigate the virtual keyboard on the screen, and the QWERTY keys don't work to enter search terms.

I decided to see if the keyboard worked with other devices so I tried pairing with my iPhone and my Mac, an in both cases it failed. The Mac looped with "Connecting" "Connected" "Disconnected" very rapidly for almost a minute and then stopped. The iPhone just said the device must be out of range or not in pairing mode, even though it showed up as available for pairing.

I am disappointed in this product. I have several of the USB dongle versions of these, and they have always been very reliable and helpful.
