5.0 out of 5 starsValue, Reliability and Versatility
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2017
FYI: See bottom of this for some "hidden" features. I have also included info about use cases and my general feelings about the device below my initial review of the Rii itself. TL;DR: it's a great device and if you're looking at devices similar to this and don't want to spend a fortune, you will be pleased by the Rii 8+. I watched numerous YouTube reviews of this device before purchasing, and that may help you decide if it's right for you.

I was looking for the perfect device that can fill three functions: be used as a media center remote, have the ability to function as mouse and keyboard for my Raspberry Pi, and be able to be used as a mobile mouse and keyboard for remote job locations to be used on Windows/Linux Servers, Android Devices, and other machines which often don't have a full keyboard and mouse or any inputs at all.

It fills all three and I LOVE IT. I heard the Rii 8+ was really light and by golly it is at only 3.2 ounces. Many times, this means the build quality is skimpy or the product will not hold up to daily use an abuse. I'm a guy who uses a mechanical keyboard that weighs 8 pounds, so I like some heft in my electronics! That also means I generally despise rubber dome keys. The keys on the Rii 8+, however, have great push down force and both and audible and physical click. You will know that you pushed a button on this, unlike some cheap TV / media remotes with squishy keys.

I have found the Rii to be surprisingly robust. While I wouldn't recommend intentionally trying to snap it in half, I do think it will hold up to general use very well. If you're going to tote it around with you all the time to use on the job, a small case might be nice to prevent it from getting scratched up or to prevent keys from being pressed, but I don't think that it's mandatory. The lightweight of the device also means that dropping it is not as injurious as it might be to a device with more weight. It weighs less than my SmartPhone!

The Rii 8+ just plugs in and WORKS, which also makes it perfect for Raspberry Pi enthusiasts like myself. That was one reason I purchased this: to use as a portable keyboard for my Raspberry Pi. So, does it work for the Pi 3+? IT WORKS AMAZINGLY WELL. Even though I have a 7 inch touch screen for my Pi, this device is so much more pleasant to use on Rasbian. Best of all, it means that when I go out to work on PCs, Servers, Linux Desktops and other devices that I can just bring this along since it works on everything I've tried it with. The primary barrier to this not working on a device is going to be the fault of the device not support USB Wireless HID, NOT because of the Rii 8+.

A word about Smart TVs: If you have a Smart TV that this doesn't work on, it's not the Rii's fault. It's your Smart TV. Keeping input proprietary is a huge problem with such devices because some Smart TV manufacturers want you to use "approved" input devices, despite most sporting fully fledged Linux / Android / Windows Operating Systems beneath the veneer of the Smart TV application. That, and they skimp on universal drivers to to save a few megabytes of storage. If a Raspberry Pi can run this, your Smart TV should be able to as well. If it doesn't, complain to the manufacturer, not the builders of the Rii.

Now for some handy features that didn't pop at at first glance:

1) Function Key* + F8 = Turns off click input from Touch Pad

2) Function Key + Swipe Up/Down on Touch Pad = Scroll Up/Down

3) Function + Space bar = Adjust DPI / sensitivity of touch pad

4) Function + Enter = Sends Ctrl+Alt+Del signal

5) The Rii 8+ uses standard mouse and keyboard drivers. So if you wanted to remap keys, you can easily do so using any software that is able to do so. Just make sure the software is able to discriminate between multiple input devices so that it knows the key press on the Rii and your regular keyboard are different.

3.0 out of 5 stars3 solid stars - good utility, stable, has more potential though
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018
I got this unit to work with several devices: PS3, FireTV Stick, Raspberry Pi, Win 10 PC. So far, I've tested it with PS3 and Fire TV. On PS3, the device is OK. I did not have the experience I was expecting because the mapping of keys from the PS3 controller to the Rii was not immediately clear. More importantly, technically, I had dificulty paring the device to the PS3 and when it did pair on EVERY use, the PS3 became unresponsive after about 3 or 4 minutes and had to be power cycled. For me, this is not an acceptable application for this item.

As for the Fire TV, the Rii pairs quickly and worked as expected once I figured out how to navigate. Some apps or the Fire OS give hints on the screen as to which key to press for certain actions. For example Esc is used for the Back function. I haven't yet determined which key corresponds to the Menu key on the Fire TV remote. In my opinion, this device is indispensable for using Firefox, or Silk browsers, although, driving the circular cursor takes some getting used to, and it got lost and became unresponsive a couple of time while using Firefox.I have not figured that out. It's not that big of a problem, though obviously the experience would be better without this particular feature.

I will update my review wafter I try it on the Pi and PC.

About the unit. Overall, I like the device, but just middling.
What I like:
1) Multi platform application. I can use it on several devices.
2) Works as expected in most cases.
3) Has a good feel to it in terms of materials although, I'm not sure how durable it is. I purchased a protection plan just in case-not sure if it will cover what might go wrong.
4) So far, except for PS3, it has been stable, no connection issues.
5) I like the power saving feature; it's similar to that of the PS3 controller and cuts down on inconvenient charging cycles. Since I'm used to reconnecting the PS3 controller, the short delay to wake up the Rii is not a problem.

Those extra stars could be gained by improving the item in several areas:
1) Higher quality manufacturing process, including inspection and testing. My unit's backlighting is fair at best, being uneven, getting dimmer from left to right. The backlight on the arrow key cluster does not shine through the "slits" on the right side of the rubberized material covering the Up Arrow and Right Arrow keys. There is enough light leakage to illuminate the keys. It seems a relatively simple test could assure unifrom backlighting. I would classify this as an annoyance that separates a good experience from a great one. I will continue to use the item, but may return it for this reason.
2) The device could use some extra mass to give it it a heftier feel. I would prefer that it be slightly larger.
3) The packaging could include a more documentation that explains how to use the device in various applications and that also explains the key labels, especially, the Fn key combinations.
4) The BT dongle is poorly manufactured. I could not get it t fit in any USB port without feeling like I was forcing it. This is not a deal breaker for me because all the devices on which I would use the device BT (Bluetooth, sorry) equipped.
5) Touchpad could be larger.

3 solid stars with potential for 4, maybe 5 with some improvements.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great keyboard! Bluetooth could not pair.
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2018

Review of: Rii FMKBTL1-IV1 i8+ BT Mini Wireless Bluetooth Backlight Touchpad Keyboard with Mouse for PC/Mac/Android, Black (RTi8BT-5).
Purchased for my Setup: YAGALA T95Z Plus Android 7.1 TV BOX. Samsung Samsung UN55NU710DFXZA.

Great Keyboard, however, I will be returning it.

The KEYBOARD: It is a very nice keyboard. The buttons are sturdy, responsive and do not stick. The backlit feature is great (white light only) and can be turned on/off by a dedicated button. There is a on/off slide power button that turns the keyboard power on/off. However, the keyboard does not have a dedicated power button to power on/off your device remotely. This is annoying since the Android box I have does not have a power button either. The keyboard was able to connect via Bluetooth to my iPad and worked fine. I did not need the dongle to connect pair it with my iPad…so the Bluetooth works and you do not need the dongle. I would recommend this keyboard for use with any other device except an Android TV Box. Please confirm the keyboard is compatible. More on this below.

The CABLE: It comes with at USB cable and a wireless dongle. The USB cable connects to the keyboard via MINI USB, not MICRO USB, which is more common. Not a major issue but forget about using another USB cable. The cable also has another attachment for another USB port. This is handy. I saw one instructional video that suggested connecting the USB dongle to this extra port, then connect the end of the USB cable to your device. Why does this keyboard come with at wireless dongle if it is Bluetooth? This keyboard was discoverable to my iPad and my android box without the dongle plugged in to either.

Connecting to by Android box: I connected the dongle to the Android box. Keyboard was discoverable but could not pair and was unresponsive. I connected the dongle to the cable, then the cable to the Android box. Keyboard was discoverable but could not pair and was unresponsive. I unplugged the dongle and cables. Keyboard was discoverable but could not pair and was unresponsive.

Connectivity failure: I was not able to successfully connect this keyboard with my Android box. Neither the “wireless” dongle worked nor the “Bluetooth” connection. This keyboard review is for the BLUETOOTH version of this key board, not the 2.4 wireless version. I was able to successfully pair the keyboard via Bluetooth, but the keyboard was not responsive. The Android boxes have two different “settings” menus. One settings menu is for the Android box (T95Z) settings and the other is deeper in the Android OS settings menu. Starting with the T95Z settings menu, I was not able to “pair” the Bluetooth keyboard. It showed up as a detectable device, but after attempting to pair, I get the “could not pair” notification. Going deeper into the Android OS settings menu, I was able to successfully pair the Bluetooth keyboard. Then backing out in to the T95Z settings, I could see that the keyboard was indeed listed as “paired”. The keyboard was unresponsive. Moreover, after it was listed as “paired” I attempted to again pair it via the T95Z settings menu and I got the same “could not pair” notification… and after that the keyboard was listed as disconnected in the Android OS menu.

I will regretfully be returning it since it is useless for my setup…however, a nice keyboard.
Buyer beware. Please make sure this keyboard works for your device. There have been many comments here that it is not compatible with Android Boxes and it lists in the description.

2.0 out of 5 stars Keys are ok, trackpad is wonky
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2023

It feels as cheap as you expect. The keys are pretty tactile, but the texture feels like its going to get disgusting in 3 years.

Look all i want is a little bluetooth keyboard with a little trackball like the old blackberrys… clicky keys, fun little ball… Real simple, small, and easy… but this is way bigger than I expected, the buttons arent “comfortable” and the trackpad is horrible.

Its a “itll do in a pinch” but it disappointed me with what i thought it was in the pictures…

The trackpad… no thats not a sticker or overlay you can remove. Thats always there reminding you, youre too dumb to remember gestures. Its either too sensitive and registers touches that didn’t happen, or misses and skips around like my old 45s. Its really really disappointing!

It fills that need for a small keyboard, but its not what i want… i am happy the trackpad is out of the way, not right next to my hand when trying to two hand type like on another model.

2.0 out of 5 stars A lesson in frustration...
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2016

It works ok, as long as your sitting within 6 feet of the dongle. at 10 feet away, not every key registers as your typing, so you have to constantly watch the screen. And the mouse is erratic at a distance. Even up close, the mouse leaves a lot to be desired. But, if you're sitting close, this is far superior to just having a normal wand remote for your entertainment box. Now if I could just figure out how to make those 8 hot-key buttons around the touch pad do what I want... hope they're programmable.

update: Still never found a way to use the menu buttons around the touch pad. And every day I use this (from across the room) the more I dislike it. Maybe the blue tooth version works better..

update2: I finally couldn't take it anymore. I just can't sit within 6 feet of my entertainment box. And at 10 feet away, I get so frustrated with this remotes poor communication, I finally tossed it and got another brand. And for all those wondering, yes, I got an extension cable for my remote dongle so it can be away from the devices and out in the open. That's what made it work out to 6 feet. Before the dongle extension, the range was much shorter. I won't pitch another product here, but the one I chose was the same price, had all the same buttons as the Rii, but is more rectangular shaped, and I can stand in the OTHER ROOM and use it successfully. Rii needs to work on their range, badly!

2.0 out of 5 stars Under Powered Short Range Keyboard Definitely NOT Bluetooth
Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2018

I really wanted to like this keyboard. It's a nice size to use with one hand, has a seemingly long battery life, great backlighting, and the material finish is by far the best I've tried. Below are some of the cons I've experienced.

Cons:
-Bluetooth range. Using with my MacBook, I can only use this keyboard within 3 or 4 feet. Anything outside of that, it starts to lose connection.
- Signal Timeout. I suppose this could be considered a benefit to extend the battery life. But the keyboard drops connection after a minute or two of inactivity. When you're using this keyboard for more of a media center control, reconnecting every time you need to skip some commercials or pause, becomes very cumbersome and down right annoying. Definitely a big con, considering most keyboards I've tried keep the connection until the device is physically turned off or set to standby.
-Trackpad. Ok it's small and discreet, I'll give it that. But given the signal strength of the Bluetooth connection, don't expect to use this like any other you've tried. Choppy and "jerky" movement...look out.

I can't recommend this keyboard to anyone looking for a media center control solution. If all you need is a short range keyboard that fits in your hand, and plan to use it continuously for long periods of time, then go for it. Just don't expect it to be very tried and true to your needs. Expect some fiddling and occasional frustration when it loses connection when you need it the most.

Onwards and Upwards.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't look as advertised, and has a finicky trackpad.

When I opened this product, it looked different (some buttons were red instead of blue, it charges using micro USB, and buttons are in different places and whatnot, clarified in pictures). It has Bluetooth connectivity and has a receiver in the back. It also has a backlight, but it doesn't cover every button the same.

I'd be okay with all that if it weren't for the fact that the trackpad is really finicky. It would constantly register a click when I tried to make a small cursor movement, and sometimes would just not register any movement while it was being finicky, and it even once drifted a bit.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Manual Would Be Nice
Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020

first off, I love the function of this little keyboard. I purchased to use exclusively with my Firestick 4K and it makes entering addresses and anything really so much easier and quicker. But herein lies my complaint; looking at the keyboard and all the keys besides those of a regular QWERTY keyboard you would assume it does much more than type but there is nothing included that explains all the keys and functions of the complete keyboard! While it says and does comes with a User Manual, said manual doesn't explain a thing except how to connect it to your device. The mouse pad, mouse keys and all the other keys that aren't on a regular keyboard are useless unless you know what they're for. Their website certainly doesn't explain them and the manual doesn't either.

That's why my review is only 2 stars; unless you know what the keys are for and what they do every one of them are useless. A manual or some kind of description would be nice

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Range
Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2016

I purchased this remote to replace a cheap IR remote that came with an android tv box.

Pros:
Good tactile feedback on key presses, and buttons have a nice rubber feel without being mushy
Track pad works well

Con:
- Horrible range. I cannot be more than 10 feet from the box, or this thing loses signal. Even at 10 feet, the connection is intermittent. I ended up having to switch back to the IR remote to operate the box. Very disappointing considering this seems like it would have been a great remote, otherwise.
- The plastic housing (blue plastic on the one I ordered and received) is a little thinner than I would have liked. I would have preferred something that felt a little sturdier, as my remotes take a little punishment sometimes. Over time, I worry the remote would have broken.

So, if you do not need to use the remote from more than 10 feet away, this may be a great remote for you.

I may try and get a replacement to see if the issue I am having with the range is just a defect with the remote I received. If I get a replacement and the range issue is fixed, I will update this review.

2.0 out of 5 stars Problems pairing, but works well when it does
Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2017

So far, this has been an ok product and its very responsive. It's very light and holds a good long charge. The whole keyboard and features require no disk set and is good to go right out of the box.
I only have a few grips with the product...
1. It's a pain to set up on Windows 10 and it doesn't auto pair each time you turn on your PC. I end up having to unpair and repair each time i start. On top of that, I can not leave the USB plugged in or my PC will have a fit when it boots up.
2. The space bar is really small, about 3/4" in length. If the controller was smaller, this wouldn't be an issue.
3. It has a problem with not waking up when it goes to sleep mode. It takes time for it to wake back up.
The good things...
1. Very responsive in every aspect when you finally get it paired. I've experienced no lag at all with normal uses, thought i don't recommend for any demanding video games.
2. Having side mouse keys and top keys has been very nice and intuitive.
3. Very light weight and comfortable in my large hands, smaller hands will struggle to type.
