5.0 out of 5 starsValue, Reliability and Versatility
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2017
FYI: See bottom of this for some "hidden" features. I have also included info about use cases and my general feelings about the device below my initial review of the Rii itself. TL;DR: it's a great device and if you're looking at devices similar to this and don't want to spend a fortune, you will be pleased by the Rii 8+. I watched numerous YouTube reviews of this device before purchasing, and that may help you decide if it's right for you.

I was looking for the perfect device that can fill three functions: be used as a media center remote, have the ability to function as mouse and keyboard for my Raspberry Pi, and be able to be used as a mobile mouse and keyboard for remote job locations to be used on Windows/Linux Servers, Android Devices, and other machines which often don't have a full keyboard and mouse or any inputs at all.

It fills all three and I LOVE IT. I heard the Rii 8+ was really light and by golly it is at only 3.2 ounces. Many times, this means the build quality is skimpy or the product will not hold up to daily use an abuse. I'm a guy who uses a mechanical keyboard that weighs 8 pounds, so I like some heft in my electronics! That also means I generally despise rubber dome keys. The keys on the Rii 8+, however, have great push down force and both and audible and physical click. You will know that you pushed a button on this, unlike some cheap TV / media remotes with squishy keys.

I have found the Rii to be surprisingly robust. While I wouldn't recommend intentionally trying to snap it in half, I do think it will hold up to general use very well. If you're going to tote it around with you all the time to use on the job, a small case might be nice to prevent it from getting scratched up or to prevent keys from being pressed, but I don't think that it's mandatory. The lightweight of the device also means that dropping it is not as injurious as it might be to a device with more weight. It weighs less than my SmartPhone!

The Rii 8+ just plugs in and WORKS, which also makes it perfect for Raspberry Pi enthusiasts like myself. That was one reason I purchased this: to use as a portable keyboard for my Raspberry Pi. So, does it work for the Pi 3+? IT WORKS AMAZINGLY WELL. Even though I have a 7 inch touch screen for my Pi, this device is so much more pleasant to use on Rasbian. Best of all, it means that when I go out to work on PCs, Servers, Linux Desktops and other devices that I can just bring this along since it works on everything I've tried it with. The primary barrier to this not working on a device is going to be the fault of the device not support USB Wireless HID, NOT because of the Rii 8+.

A word about Smart TVs: If you have a Smart TV that this doesn't work on, it's not the Rii's fault. It's your Smart TV. Keeping input proprietary is a huge problem with such devices because some Smart TV manufacturers want you to use "approved" input devices, despite most sporting fully fledged Linux / Android / Windows Operating Systems beneath the veneer of the Smart TV application. That, and they skimp on universal drivers to to save a few megabytes of storage. If a Raspberry Pi can run this, your Smart TV should be able to as well. If it doesn't, complain to the manufacturer, not the builders of the Rii.

Now for some handy features that didn't pop at at first glance:

1) Function Key* + F8 = Turns off click input from Touch Pad

2) Function Key + Swipe Up/Down on Touch Pad = Scroll Up/Down

3) Function + Space bar = Adjust DPI / sensitivity of touch pad

4) Function + Enter = Sends Ctrl+Alt+Del signal

5) The Rii 8+ uses standard mouse and keyboard drivers. So if you wanted to remap keys, you can easily do so using any software that is able to do so. Just make sure the software is able to discriminate between multiple input devices so that it knows the key press on the Rii and your regular keyboard are different.

3.0 out of 5 stars3 solid stars - good utility, stable, has more potential though
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018
I got this unit to work with several devices: PS3, FireTV Stick, Raspberry Pi, Win 10 PC. So far, I've tested it with PS3 and Fire TV. On PS3, the device is OK. I did not have the experience I was expecting because the mapping of keys from the PS3 controller to the Rii was not immediately clear. More importantly, technically, I had dificulty paring the device to the PS3 and when it did pair on EVERY use, the PS3 became unresponsive after about 3 or 4 minutes and had to be power cycled. For me, this is not an acceptable application for this item.

As for the Fire TV, the Rii pairs quickly and worked as expected once I figured out how to navigate. Some apps or the Fire OS give hints on the screen as to which key to press for certain actions. For example Esc is used for the Back function. I haven't yet determined which key corresponds to the Menu key on the Fire TV remote. In my opinion, this device is indispensable for using Firefox, or Silk browsers, although, driving the circular cursor takes some getting used to, and it got lost and became unresponsive a couple of time while using Firefox.I have not figured that out. It's not that big of a problem, though obviously the experience would be better without this particular feature.

I will update my review wafter I try it on the Pi and PC.

About the unit. Overall, I like the device, but just middling.
What I like:
1) Multi platform application. I can use it on several devices.
2) Works as expected in most cases.
3) Has a good feel to it in terms of materials although, I'm not sure how durable it is. I purchased a protection plan just in case-not sure if it will cover what might go wrong.
4) So far, except for PS3, it has been stable, no connection issues.
5) I like the power saving feature; it's similar to that of the PS3 controller and cuts down on inconvenient charging cycles. Since I'm used to reconnecting the PS3 controller, the short delay to wake up the Rii is not a problem.

Those extra stars could be gained by improving the item in several areas:
1) Higher quality manufacturing process, including inspection and testing. My unit's backlighting is fair at best, being uneven, getting dimmer from left to right. The backlight on the arrow key cluster does not shine through the "slits" on the right side of the rubberized material covering the Up Arrow and Right Arrow keys. There is enough light leakage to illuminate the keys. It seems a relatively simple test could assure unifrom backlighting. I would classify this as an annoyance that separates a good experience from a great one. I will continue to use the item, but may return it for this reason.
2) The device could use some extra mass to give it it a heftier feel. I would prefer that it be slightly larger.
3) The packaging could include a more documentation that explains how to use the device in various applications and that also explains the key labels, especially, the Fn key combinations.
4) The BT dongle is poorly manufactured. I could not get it t fit in any USB port without feeling like I was forcing it. This is not a deal breaker for me because all the devices on which I would use the device BT (Bluetooth, sorry) equipped.
5) Touchpad could be larger.

3 solid stars with potential for 4, maybe 5 with some improvements.

3.0 out of 5 stars the only one I found I needed was pause/break (Windows Key + Pause is an easy way to open up Device Manager)
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2015
Verified Purchase
I bought this largely on the positive reviews, but after using it for several weeks I am looking for a replacement. This unit is not "bad" by any means - and it has nearly every key you would want (e.g. the F1-F12 keys); the only one I found I needed was pause/break (Windows Key + Pause is an easy way to open up Device Manager).

The battery life is pretty good. I use it probably every day with intermittent activity, so it's usually left in the "on" position. It shuts itself off after 3 minutes but comes to life very quickly with the press of a button. I found that to be quite nice.

My first main complaint is the range. My HTPC/TV is only about 10 feet or so from where the keyboard gets used, with a clear line of sight (no walls, etc.). However, I find that I have to hold it forward so that it's closer for it to recognize some key presses. It's quite frustrating when you're trying to type or use hotkeys all you'll accidentally hit enter with a message half-completed or what have you. My full-size logitech keyboard works just fine at longer distances - even in other rooms - so I'm pretty certain the problem with this product is a lower power receiver.

The second complaint I have is the touchpad. It's passable at best. It doesn't feel quite right, and it doesn't seem to be incredibly accurate. It gets the job done, but it feels sluggish to respond. Combine that with the intermittent connectivity if you're not holding the keyboard correctly, and it results in some frustrating.

A final nitpick is the button placement of the non-QERTY keys. Specifically the backlight button. It being the second button in a row makes it hard to find in a dark room. Minor annoyance, but still - it really should be the top button if not placed prominently elsewhere.

All that said, it's decent for the price. If you're not going to be too far away from the source it works quite well and gets the job done.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good size, Bad connectivity issue (for me)

Bought this for use with a couple of Raspberry Pi devices.

It’s size is perfect, the buttons have a satisfying clicky mess to them, and the backlight is a nice touch.

Out of the box, it was fully charged and ready to go. I was able to pair it to one of my Pi computers with no issue. Typing was responsive with no delay. Rebooted the Pi and the connection picked right back up when the Bluetooth radio was enabled. Same too when the keyboard was powered off and back on.

When the issue arose was when I went to pair it to another device. I could see the MAC when paired to my iPhone, but when I went to detect it to re-pair on the same Pi, I noticed the MAC was different. It paired again with no issue, but now I had two profiles for it. I put the keyboard into pairing mode again, and the Pi detected a new MAC for it once more. Then I went to pair it on a second Pi; new MAC again.

If I were using this on a single device, never needing to move it between devices, it would be fine. But this weird MAC randomize part of its pairing mode completely ruins my use for it.

If you only need it for one device, it should be great. If you need to move it on a regular basis, don’t bother with this keyboard. It will only frustrate you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great upgrade over a regular remote but...
Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2015
Verified Purchase
I bought this keyboard/remote to use with the Matricom G-Box Q that I also purchased along with this product.

This touch pad wireless keyboard is a definite improvement over using a typical ordinary remote that you would normally get with your Stream Box. It you use YouTube or Movie Stream Sites and search a lot for movie names, song names or artists then this is a must have... no more hitting the up down left right buttons to type in the search field.

However I only gave 3 stars for this product because I did find a few minor annoyances when using it.

The battery saver feature on this device is rather slow. Whenever you decide to pick up your remote to use with your box, you would have to hit one of the buttons on the remote then wait a couple of seconds for it to connect with the receiver before you can do anything, the buttons will not work instantly like they would on the regular remote.

I still don't know what half the buttons do on the remote due to a very useless user manual that doesn't really explain anything. Some of the buttons don't even do what they are illustrated to do.
The home button doesn't really do anything.
The 'e' button takes you back to the systems home menu screen.
The 'right mouse' button acts as the back button.
So a more detailed descriptive manual would be a plus or at least a link to view or download a full detailed manual online would be nice.

The keyboard is not as responsive as I had hoped it would be. If you are a fast typer like myself then you would have to really pay attention to the screen as it is very easy to miss a letter or two if you do not push down on the buttons hard enough.

Other than that I am still pleased with the product compared to using a normal remote that comes out of the box.

3.0 out of 5 stars Except for Wake-Up Lag, Works Well!
Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023

Overall, the unit works well even though it's a small unit. Especially liked the ability to reposition the cursor using the small touch pad and the small, but very usable, keypad. On the downside, if the unit is not used for a few minutes it goes to sleep and then takes upwards of 2-10 seconds to wake back up when you wish to use it again by hitting a key. This is a bothersome issue they need to address. I'll give the unit a 5 once they address that issue.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh, wouldn't buy this again
Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2022

I've had this a few weeks and already find it incredibly frustrating to use. A few observations...

- I bought the white version, the plastic case bleeds light through it. Doesn't appear like a quality item
- the physical buttons for the mouse clicks are all the way on the left hand side of the keypad. Would have made sense to have these directly below the trackpad for easier access.
- anyone who has played a game console knows that the D-pad should be at your left thumb. This keyboard places it on the right hand side. Not intuitive.
- Generally the layout is way too dense/fussy. Constantly need to look down to check where keys are. Not that convenient.
- it's too light, such that it feels very cheap and fragile.

I wouldn't buy this again, much prefer the style of some of the other products in this category.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Stay Connected To Receiver
Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2015

Updated: Overtime you start to see the things that irk you. The thing that drives me crazy about this keyboard is I sit about 7 feet away from the receiver and in direct sight (I use it with an HTPC), but too often it doesn't connect to it when I press a button. So I have to wait for the yellow light to stop blinking, turn blue again and try pressing it again, or move closer. It's still ok, but this alone will make me pass on it the next time I need to buy a new keyboard.

Original: Overall it's a great little keyboard. No complaints. I have had it over a month and have only had to charge it 3 times (including the first time), which doesn't take long, plus you can still use it while it's charging.

- It has a nice feel to it, buttons and body.
- Very lightweight.
- Works great with Kodi

My main con is the mousepad doesn't reflect the size of your screen. In other words, you can just start at one corner of the pad and move to the other corner and the pointer end up in the same place on your TV. You have to pick your finger up and drag it a couple of times to get it to where you want it to go. It's not a huge deal, but it would make look at a different model if need to purchase another one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent but some major issues

First off, while this is overall an okay device, the bluetooth doesnt work right. sure, it connected but no inputs came through to the computer. Secondly, only the BLACK VERSION, the one i got, comes with a backup usb dongle. Thats how I'm able to type out this review, or even use the thing. Third, while the media keys are nice, they aren't as useful as i thought. would rather have a larger track in exchange for the media keys.
Final thoughts: While the buttons are nice and the hand feel is good, the connectivity is ehhh and i think ill return this one and get the sister model without the media keys and frankly useless bluetooth.

Honest Answer
3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay
Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2020
Color: GreenStyle: BluetoothVerified Purchase
Definitely met my immediate needs and does just about everything I want. But, it is not made of very high quality materials... I would have no problem paying a bit more for this to get better quality. I will probably try a different model from the same company once this one inevitably breaks. I think they have some newer models that might have slightly improved construction/materials. The three star rating is strictly due to the materials and the fact that I get disconnected from bluetooth for no apparent reason at less once a week which requires me to have my computer forget the device and completely re sync this device to my computer like day one. It's fun while it lasts.
* Update... dropped it once and the power on/off switch stopped working. Luckily it says on and not off so it still works just without the ability to turn it off. Mainly just an issue with very poor built quality but I still like the design. The keyboard layout could be better... I constantly find myself searching for the non-existent shift key on the right side of the keyboard... another shift key would be nice as well as relocation certain keys.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mine didn't come with USB dongle. Works great for surfing on smart TV

It works great for using the internet browser on Samsung smart TV. You can point to things with the touch pad and entering words is easy with QWERTY keypad.

But with all those buttons, it is not able to pull up the main menu on the TV. I still have to use the TV remote to do this.

Mine did not come with the USB receiver dongle. The item contents say it comes with it, but the pictures says it does not. This needs to be corrected either way, but I really wish mine came with it.

Update 6/20/2020:
Sometimes the buttons don't work that well. I often get the letter E and H missing when typing. I was able to pull up the home menu when I press fast forward, fast rewind, and fast forward again. I don't know why this works. This is the first time I've had a bluetooth device have 3 different MAC addresses and I couldn't get the keyboard to work all the time until I had all 3 saved to the TV.
