5.0 out of 5 starsValue, Reliability and Versatility
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2017
FYI: See bottom of this for some "hidden" features. I have also included info about use cases and my general feelings about the device below my initial review of the Rii itself. TL;DR: it's a great device and if you're looking at devices similar to this and don't want to spend a fortune, you will be pleased by the Rii 8+. I watched numerous YouTube reviews of this device before purchasing, and that may help you decide if it's right for you.

I was looking for the perfect device that can fill three functions: be used as a media center remote, have the ability to function as mouse and keyboard for my Raspberry Pi, and be able to be used as a mobile mouse and keyboard for remote job locations to be used on Windows/Linux Servers, Android Devices, and other machines which often don't have a full keyboard and mouse or any inputs at all.

It fills all three and I LOVE IT. I heard the Rii 8+ was really light and by golly it is at only 3.2 ounces. Many times, this means the build quality is skimpy or the product will not hold up to daily use an abuse. I'm a guy who uses a mechanical keyboard that weighs 8 pounds, so I like some heft in my electronics! That also means I generally despise rubber dome keys. The keys on the Rii 8+, however, have great push down force and both and audible and physical click. You will know that you pushed a button on this, unlike some cheap TV / media remotes with squishy keys.

I have found the Rii to be surprisingly robust. While I wouldn't recommend intentionally trying to snap it in half, I do think it will hold up to general use very well. If you're going to tote it around with you all the time to use on the job, a small case might be nice to prevent it from getting scratched up or to prevent keys from being pressed, but I don't think that it's mandatory. The lightweight of the device also means that dropping it is not as injurious as it might be to a device with more weight. It weighs less than my SmartPhone!

The Rii 8+ just plugs in and WORKS, which also makes it perfect for Raspberry Pi enthusiasts like myself. That was one reason I purchased this: to use as a portable keyboard for my Raspberry Pi. So, does it work for the Pi 3+? IT WORKS AMAZINGLY WELL. Even though I have a 7 inch touch screen for my Pi, this device is so much more pleasant to use on Rasbian. Best of all, it means that when I go out to work on PCs, Servers, Linux Desktops and other devices that I can just bring this along since it works on everything I've tried it with. The primary barrier to this not working on a device is going to be the fault of the device not support USB Wireless HID, NOT because of the Rii 8+.

A word about Smart TVs: If you have a Smart TV that this doesn't work on, it's not the Rii's fault. It's your Smart TV. Keeping input proprietary is a huge problem with such devices because some Smart TV manufacturers want you to use "approved" input devices, despite most sporting fully fledged Linux / Android / Windows Operating Systems beneath the veneer of the Smart TV application. That, and they skimp on universal drivers to to save a few megabytes of storage. If a Raspberry Pi can run this, your Smart TV should be able to as well. If it doesn't, complain to the manufacturer, not the builders of the Rii.

Now for some handy features that didn't pop at at first glance:

1) Function Key* + F8 = Turns off click input from Touch Pad

2) Function Key + Swipe Up/Down on Touch Pad = Scroll Up/Down

3) Function + Space bar = Adjust DPI / sensitivity of touch pad

4) Function + Enter = Sends Ctrl+Alt+Del signal

5) The Rii 8+ uses standard mouse and keyboard drivers. So if you wanted to remap keys, you can easily do so using any software that is able to do so. Just make sure the software is able to discriminate between multiple input devices so that it knows the key press on the Rii and your regular keyboard are different.

3.0 out of 5 stars3 solid stars - good utility, stable, has more potential though
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018
I got this unit to work with several devices: PS3, FireTV Stick, Raspberry Pi, Win 10 PC. So far, I've tested it with PS3 and Fire TV. On PS3, the device is OK. I did not have the experience I was expecting because the mapping of keys from the PS3 controller to the Rii was not immediately clear. More importantly, technically, I had dificulty paring the device to the PS3 and when it did pair on EVERY use, the PS3 became unresponsive after about 3 or 4 minutes and had to be power cycled. For me, this is not an acceptable application for this item.

As for the Fire TV, the Rii pairs quickly and worked as expected once I figured out how to navigate. Some apps or the Fire OS give hints on the screen as to which key to press for certain actions. For example Esc is used for the Back function. I haven't yet determined which key corresponds to the Menu key on the Fire TV remote. In my opinion, this device is indispensable for using Firefox, or Silk browsers, although, driving the circular cursor takes some getting used to, and it got lost and became unresponsive a couple of time while using Firefox.I have not figured that out. It's not that big of a problem, though obviously the experience would be better without this particular feature.

I will update my review wafter I try it on the Pi and PC.

About the unit. Overall, I like the device, but just middling.
What I like:
1) Multi platform application. I can use it on several devices.
2) Works as expected in most cases.
3) Has a good feel to it in terms of materials although, I'm not sure how durable it is. I purchased a protection plan just in case-not sure if it will cover what might go wrong.
4) So far, except for PS3, it has been stable, no connection issues.
5) I like the power saving feature; it's similar to that of the PS3 controller and cuts down on inconvenient charging cycles. Since I'm used to reconnecting the PS3 controller, the short delay to wake up the Rii is not a problem.

Those extra stars could be gained by improving the item in several areas:
1) Higher quality manufacturing process, including inspection and testing. My unit's backlighting is fair at best, being uneven, getting dimmer from left to right. The backlight on the arrow key cluster does not shine through the "slits" on the right side of the rubberized material covering the Up Arrow and Right Arrow keys. There is enough light leakage to illuminate the keys. It seems a relatively simple test could assure unifrom backlighting. I would classify this as an annoyance that separates a good experience from a great one. I will continue to use the item, but may return it for this reason.
2) The device could use some extra mass to give it it a heftier feel. I would prefer that it be slightly larger.
3) The packaging could include a more documentation that explains how to use the device in various applications and that also explains the key labels, especially, the Fn key combinations.
4) The BT dongle is poorly manufactured. I could not get it t fit in any USB port without feeling like I was forcing it. This is not a deal breaker for me because all the devices on which I would use the device BT (Bluetooth, sorry) equipped.
5) Touchpad could be larger.

3 solid stars with potential for 4, maybe 5 with some improvements.

This size and format was perfect. Layout with the QWERTY keys was well within reach of my thumbs - loved it so much!!! My purpose for this keyboard was to use with my iPad and Android tablets. Was tired of typing on the screen when the on-screen keyboard would cover a huge portion of what I was working on. It needed to be bluetooth because a USB dongle was not available on IOS and my android phone/tablet. The problem? the mouse pad. IPad 7th gen did not function well. Too often the mouse would trigger an icon or other feature as you dragged the cursor around. It even triggers the uninstall feature of the iPad. Arrg! Not good if you just finished a design and your mouse pad closes your window because you touched it the wrong way. Another similar bluetooth mini keyboard I tried, had much better mouse response and behavior (but button size and spacing was all wrong). Not sure its software or hardware on the Rii, but its not quite there yet. Please fix it! Similar poor mouse behavior on my S9+ phone. The good news is that on my Amazon HD10 tablet, the blue tooth mouse worked perfectly. Also using my PC and the USB receiver, it worked flawlessly. No problems at all. It worked on a Win10 Laptop and even my old Win7 32 bit tablet. I tried to connect with my Logitec mouse USB receiver but it was not compatible. So this occupies another USB port. I gave this a 4 star because of the mouse pad behavior on bluetooth on iOS Otherwise a 5 star all around. On the 2.6Ghz USB, it is stellar!!!!! I wrote this review with the Rii keyboard on the PC. Very easy for two thumb typing because key spacing was the right amount for my thick thumbs. Also, button feel is good. It does make mild clicking noises with each key press, so no typing while my wife is trying to get to sleep. Overall a great buy and value. Great build quality and I like the dual bluetooth / USB receiver functions. Just please improve the mouse behavior while using bluetooth on iOS. I did not buy this for gaming.

I’ve been searching for a portable handheld keyboard since typing in AVP is limited without an external keyboard. I didn’t want a full size keyboard because I want to use the AVP anywhere and fit it in my travel case. I’ve tried a few and this is pretty nice.

Pros:
* Convenient buttons outside of typing, inc. volume, pause, click, page up/down, home, arrows
* Placement of these buttons doesn’t require looking at it
* Trackpad out of the way, but there if you need it
* Small enough to fit in a small travel case with the AVP

Cons:
* Not possible to touch-type, you have to look at it. It’s missing the bumps on f and j even if you wanted to try.
* Only one shift button, on left.
* Could be even smaller and work fine I think.

It solved my problem and gave me features I didn’t know I wanted. Using it for volume control is much better than pinching. Using arrow keys to move the cursor is nice. Trackpad may come in handy. First day with it, so far, so good.

4.0 out of 5 stars RII-I8+, a IS11-BT05, and a RII-MK02+
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2016

This is one of 3 mini keyboards (this one) the RII-I8+, a IS11-BT05, and a RII-MK02+. I tried these with an Android TV, a Fire TV and a Fire TV Stick.

IMPORTANT (applies to all devices):
With all of these devices the mouse (touchpad) cursor does NOT follow keyboard arrow key navigation. This is VERY annoying with an Android TV. The workaround for this is to always use the mini-keyboard as a mouse and only use keyboard navigation as a last resort. With Fire TV, you want to use the mini-keyboard as a keyboard, the mouse (touchpad) functions are virtually useless. The volume keys do not work with Fire
TV.

With Android TV, the only way to execute a function is to place the mouse cursor over it and press the left-mouse button. The 'Enter' key behaves exactly the same as the left-mouse button. If you press 'Enter' in keyboard mode, it turns the mouse cursor on. If you press 'Enter' in mouse mode, it behaves identically to the left mouse button - whatever is under the mouse cursor gets executed.

With Fire TV, you want to use the mini-keyboard as a keyboard. You navigate using the arrow keys and pressing 'Enter'. This behaves predictably with all 3 mini-keyboards.The only issue I have with this is the 'Enter' key is not well placed, you have to reach into the middle of a bunch of keys to press it. Since, you are in keyboard mode all of those mouse button keys are completely useless!

The RII-MK02+ has no 'Home' key - which is one of the main reasons I returned it. NB: The RII-I8+'s 'Home' key is mislabeled as 'e'.

If you are using these with Kodi.. make certain to google 'Kodi Keyboard Shortcuts' - you are going to need them. Believe it or not, the shortcut keys are VERY useful and provide additional functionality!

BEWARE: Technical documentation for ALL of these devices is virtually non-existent. If you have a technical question, be prepared to painstakingly search through Amazon comments to find an answer.

Rankings:
1. I rate this mini-keyboard, the RII-I8+, as the best. At $29usd, it is also the most expensive.
2. A close 2nd is the IS11-BT05. At $23 it is reasonably priced.
3. The RII-MK02+ (the one with the laser pointer) is a distant 3rd. At $21 it is the cheapest. Unfortunately, it is under-featured so I sent it back.

'RiiDirect' customer support for this item is OUTSTANDING. NB: 'RiiDirect' does NOT provide technical support for this item

So I think we all know by now that the reason these are/were available at such a good price is because the built-in batteries are NOT GOOD. I bought a small battery pack and cable that can be taped to the back of the unit and work really, really well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VF8JJ7J/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JZCZSH9/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I have been using this battery pack for 2 months. As soon as the red light starts blinking, I hook up the charger cable. It charges in < 2 hours. The battery holds about 5 charges for my Rii. YMMV.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice and good feeling mini Bluetooth keyboard
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2016
Color: GreenStyle: BluetoothVerified Purchase
If you are looking for an inexpensive and small Bluetooth keyboard you can't go wrong with this one. It was very easy to pair with everything I have used it on. Those being my Samsung Note 5, my Samsung Smart TV and my Kangaroo Mini PC. I charged it up when it arrived and it was as easy to pair as hitting the Bluetooth key on the keyboard and finding it on the device, hitting pair and it was done. The mousepad is small, of course, but works well for mouse clicks as well as scrolling. Seems to be pretty sensitive so this might bother some people. The feel of they keyboard is wonderful. Smooth, soft feeling plastic. It is extremely light so I don't know about longevity but it feels great in your hands. Backlight works well, very bright. The right and left mouse click buttons are located on the left side of the keyboard and are duplicated at the top on either side of the mousepad. You can also perform them with the mousepad, so everyone should be able to find a way that suits them. There is only one shift key located on the left hand side so this is somewhat cumbersome at times, though you will not be speed typing on this. There are no bumps on the F and J key like a full sized keyboard, so touch typing is difficult but honestly who does that on a small keyboard like this. There is very little documentation that comes with the unit itself and I have not looked online to see if there is a more thorough manual. This model only works with Bluetooth and no dongle is included. Overall, I am very pleased with it and would recommend it if you need a very portable and usable Bluetooth keyboard.

Pros: 1. Lightweight, good texture 2. Easy to pair and start using 3. Works with multiple devices easily 4. Functional touchpad that can be used for scrolling and right/left mouse clicks 5. Nice backlighting for use in dark rooms
Cons: 1. Lightweight again, could affect durability 2. Only one shift key and must be held down to capitalize 3. Very little documentation included

Using this on my Sony XBR 900F smart television via bluetooth.

Connected to the television without any issues. So far only tested with Netflix and Crunchyroll apps but keyboard typing in search works perfectly. All other basic functions also work including power on and off. Note: I have to push ESC to go "back"; there isn't a designated "back" button. Also the trackpad works, an arrow shows up on screen and tracks to my finger movement. Honestly though I have no idea what to use it with. Unit is bluetooth&2.4 w/dongle stored inside the body. A cable for charging is included and also doubles as an USB-A extension with female termination. My unit is a little different from what's pictured; power and bluetooth buttons are reversed, functions are also different from picture(but better for my needs/smart tv).

Overall I'm very satisfied with this new remote, the keyboard function works and all basic functions operate. I can control my TV with this unit alone. Cherry on top is this is much more responsive than the original Sony IR remote.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely NOT for Amazon Fire TV box
Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2017
Verified Purchase
I bought this to use with 2nd Gen Amazon Fire TV box (not stick) and it absolutely does not work with it. This actually has nothing to do with the product itself. The problem is with Amazon as the Fire TV doesn't recognize the Rii's Bluetooth signal or the dongel. I did get it to pair with my PS4 in a matter of seconds but I have a remote for that already and really wanted this for my TV.

So now you're saying to yourself, "Yeah well, I saw this video on YouTube and they showed how to do it." They certainly did show you how to connect it, but.... (always a but).... Did you notice the day/month/year that video was posted? Amazon.com has updated Fire TV since then and now it won't recognize the Rii in discovery mode or with the dongel (after adjustments to Fire TV Device Settings). It is now Dec 2017 and as of today it will not work.

I decided to keep it as it works beautifully with PS4. It only gets 4*'s because the gestures on the touch pad are just stupid. Who ever heard of using 2 fingers to roll around the cursor? That's not even ergonomic. Also, there are some unnecessary right and left mouse buttons on the left side of the unit.

Zettaguard enclosed a very nice thank you card from Customer Support with a $3 off any product coupon..... Only it expired 6 months ago. Yeah, that's a fail. I have no plans to buy anymore of their products at this time so I'm not going to take an additional star away. You never know, if you call them, they may honor it.

OK, let's recap: It doesn't work with 2nd Gen Amazon Fire TV box. I know the description says it does, and YouTube says it does but it just doesn't. I can only assume that this is true of all non-Amazon sanctioned devices. I did put other units in Bluetooth discovery mode and Fire TV didn't pick up on any of them. Don't believe me? Get it yourself and best of luck. Hope it works for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very happy with product
Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2016

This is an extremely handy little item. I use it onboard my truck as an over the road driver since the touchscreen keyboard on my peoplenet terminal is not reliable. The packaging was. Dry simple and had no instructions, however it was straight forward and simple plug and play. Upon receiving it I naturally charged it overnight before placing it in service. While every feature doesn't work on my terminal it is designed to be universal and it worked immediately upon turning it on. I use it several times a day 5 days a week and turn it off on the wknd when I'm out of the truck. It has been approx. a month and a half since I started using it and have not had to recharge the battery yet. Very happy with this. The sleep feature seems to reliably conserve the battery and I never have an issue bringing it out of sleep mode. Simply tap any key and it's wakes up and is ready to type. I love the backlit keyboard for nighttime typing as well. If you have really big fingers it can be somewhat difficult to type as the keys are placed close together due to its compact size. To give you an idea; its smaller than a jewel case for a CD. I'm not rough on my equipment and I placed a metal plate on the back to attach it to a phone magnet to keep it in place. This has not interfered with the performance of the product at all. The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is due to it not working for every feature on my terminal. That being said, peoplenet is a communication terminal and not a gaming device or computer. I have been extremely pleased with its performance and reliability. Well worth the cost.

Great little keyboard for Fire TV, HTPC, streaming boxes, etc. I like it and it's probably better than any other options available. I am a very discerning customer and don't write many reviews. But this keyboard is great. If you own a streaming box and you get sick of entering text with the factory remote then BUY THIS! Great for Kodi users!

Pros:
- backlit (this is huge) don't buy ANY remote without this
- lightweight yet feels like good quality
- perfect size
- rechargeable batt
- supports many different OS/devices

Wishlist:
- Programmable IR functionality (you can't turn on TV/home theater so second remote is required)
- more android butttons and include a button mapping guide (button mapping is confusing)
- reduce the number of buttons slightly or change them to be OS/Android specific (function keys and redundant mouse buttons are not necessary)
- take the Rii logo and instructions off the trackpad (looks tacky in my opinion)

Make sure you order from amazon direct and get a genuine product. Lots of fakes floating around i hear. My keyboard has the Rii logo and gesture instructions imprinted on the trackpad as you see in the pics above. The box also has a genuine sticker with hologram.

A few tips for Fire TV users (and probably most android users):

- You can pair it to the fireTV using the bluetooth function in the fireTV settings menu. No need to use the usb dongle although you might be able to

- Esc = back on FTV remote

- Back = back in kodi

- C = context menu (depends on app)

- M = menu (depends on app)

- other kodi shortcuts exist when hitting different letters
