Has a slight lip so it sits on the mug/cup without sliding off, has 2 openings on either side so you can see the water level as you pour to prevent overflowing. Actually makes the coffee taste better than my single cup brewer, which I have now donated to Goodwill; not sure why this is. No cleaning with vinegar, no counter space used, no buttons or complex settings to learn as with other makers. Great idea.
Update- found you can also use regular carafe filters, not only are they cheaper but the Melitta ones sometimes separate at the bottom seam and drop grounds into my coffee.
