This is an amazing story, based upon real events

What do you do when you lose everything? Fight back. It is the 1940s, and the world is at war. Elek is a young Jewish man in Hungary. When the Nazis take his entire family he and a small group of friends set out to rescue as many of their people from the enemy as they can, by pretending to be the enemy. They do this with the assistance of some Nazi uniforms they obtain.

This is one of the most mesmerizing movies I have ever experienced. They did not have the backing of any major studios in making this film, but the quality did not suffer. This is an amazing story, based upon real events, and told beautifully.

It had a limited distribution in theaters, the only way it was hurt by lack of a major studio presence. I was fortunate to see it in a theater, and have anxiously awaited its release on DVD. When I heard it had been, I promptly ordered my own copy. This film will haunt me forever.

The story seems ridiculously implausible. Apparently it's based on true events but it can't have been like this.

When the main character Elek Cohen's friend is captured by Hungarian police allied with the Nazis he impulsively digs up some Nazi officer uniforms, shows up at the police headquarters and intimidates them into releasing his friend without having to show them official papers or anything that would give him away. Risky, and he could have easily been discovered, but he accomplishes this through sheer boldness.

Then he does the exact same thing again. And again. And again. And not just to free one person but dozens and hundreds of Jews at a time who are being taken away to be executed. How could this keep happening? How stupid are these Nazis to not catch on that there is someone impersonating a Nazi officer after it happens a few times? Even after he engages in a massive shootout in broad daylight while dressed as a Nazi officer, they still don't catch on. No word ever gets out that there is someone impersonating a Nazi officer and acting without orders to aid Jews. We see in one scene that his disguise isn't even advanced enough for him to be able to plausibly answer basic questions like who his commanding officer is if anyone were the ask, but no one ever does except for one time in which he's able to just walk away without the person asking him getting suspicious even when he is later seen multiple times by this same person doing extremely suspicious things. It strains credulity in the extreme and I just can't buy it.

The acting and characters are also cringely melodramatic and cliched at times.

Wow what an amazing story and a good history lesson on how Hungary's Jewish population was protected until the last year of WWII. A true hero who acted selflessly and saved many people.

Please disregard the IMDB rating, which is way off. This is a well done movie that hammers home a great lesson on the holocaust.
