5.0 out of 5 starsGreat Little Mortar and Pestle for Small Grinding Needs
Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2021
I was skeptical about purchasing from other reviews, but it was too cute and well priced to pass up. So here's my take to possibly help you This!
This isn't my first mortar and pestle, however it is my first one that I had to "prep" / "season" / "cure", whatever you want to call it. Essentially, it comes to you as a raw, newly made item. At first it will feel like its unfinished, however this is how its supposed to be in order to grind better and this happens with all granite/stone mortars and pestles. If you touch the inside of the mortar or the bottom of the pestle, it may have some slight stone powder. This means you'll need to prep it.
You therefore have to wash it in warm water w/o soap, allow to air dry, then grind up rice and discard about 2 to 3 times separately to get the stone to stop shedding powder and then season or cure it with spices so that it is ready to grind up whatever you need.
I.E. Don't just take it out of the box and use it for something you eat right away! If you do you may get stone particles in your food. Wait until after you clean it and prep it. Just Google how to prep my mortar and pestle and I'm sure there's an article or video that will suit your needs.
I knew this would be a small one, so I was hoping for one this size. I only need it for making small batch herb grinding for teas, salves, etc. So it fits my needs perfectly. It holds about 1 cup if filled to the brim, but keep in mind you'll need room for muddling (mixing/grinding). If you're looking for something to make bigger portions in, find a bigger one.
I always super appreciate when people add pictures to reviews so I tried to get the size and aesthetic as good as I could. I'm a young woman with relatively small/medium sized hands for reference. This fits in the palm of my hand comfortably and is really exactly what I wanted.
Hope this helps! I'm happy I got it and would definitely buy again if needed. Its a sturdy little mortar and pestle.
