Weird smell. Worked well.

The first thing I noticed when I unboxed it was the weirdest and a pretty disgusting smell, almost like vomit.
It may have been the plastics off-gassing, but I'll never know for sure.

The hub portion is made of metal and seems sturdy. It works as advertised. The cable is a little on the stiff side but it still works and it feels like it may be able to take a bit of abuse.

Overall: Smells weird. Works well. Seems durable

Compact Card Reader for fast transfers, be careful with CF cards

The card reader is compact and works as expected. Transfer is fast, but the speed obviously also depends on the card. My only complaint would be that CF cards need to be inserted face down, see pictures. SD and microSD cards go in face up. This is a bit weird and I only found out because the CF card initially did not fit. When I felt some resistance, I turned it over and then it fit. This should be mentioned in the instructions as it could cause damage to the card reader and/or the memory card if someone pushes it in the wrong way.

Since Apple does not include a slot for SD cards in Minis (or anything anymore?), and my Delkin Reader was not working on the M1 and Delkin does not respond to contacting them, I looked for a similar simple reader. This seemed about right.
I plugged the Unitek into a USB-C to USB-A hub as my two external HDs take up the USB slots on a Mac Mini M1. I was happy to see the Unitek worked well for both my Lexar CF and PNY SD cards - 64GB. Fast to appear in the Finder when inserted in the reader.
Seems sturdy and that long cord is welcome, if a bit stiff and gangly. But, it is attached to the reader. Forget about using a shorter one if you need to do that.
One thing it needs are some rubber feet. They should just include them. I want to put the reader on the Mini but, will have to put my own feet on or the metal on metal will scratch the Mini. I might also just put one big, flat rubber foot on it. Needed this for uploading pics from an old camera's Compact Flash card. Plugged it in and the drive appeared on my iMac and I was able to transfer the files with no issues. The housing and cord on this card reader appear sturdy. NOTE: for the smaller card slots (micro SD etc), the card gets inserted right side up, but for compact flash, you must insert it upside down (colorful side down) or you won't be able to connect to the pins and may damage the pins if you try to force it. Insert the card into the reader before plugging the reader into your device's USB port. Minimal instructions are included in the box.
