It arrived as expected, well packaged - no shipping damage. I conditioned upon receiving. After conditioning, the finish is as smooth as I would like. It grinds well, and cleans well. In regards to the finish not being as smooth as some wished, that's to be expected for a new mortar and pestle. You MUST condition it first. I recommend attaching felt to the bottom, then add water and grind on all rough surface areas evenly. Be sure to rotate the pestle to get the round shape you desire. After a while of grinding, you'll notice the water has turned into a sediment slurry. This is what you want. Occasionally change the water, and check the smoothness. Grind with the water until the desired effect is achieved. I hope this helps those who haven't had experience with a mortar and pestle before. I will purchase from this seller again.

I received this product and it was clearly broken and repaired! Note the crack line thru and thru that was put back together with epoxy! My husband who deals with stone manufacturing verified this as he has seen marble tiles repaired this way! A complete waste of my time and not worth the frustration, very disappointed as this was going to be a Christmas gift.

Don't understand the finish????

My purpose in this purchase was to get a FUNCTIONAL product to use for practical application - not to get a nice looking nic-nac for display. Specifically, I have to crush medicine pills for my dogs to a powder to put in dog food (instead of giving big pills)....every meal, every day. So, I know in the description it talks about the finish being shiny outside and raw inside, but it also talks about these as usable products. The way these are made is the outside is glossy and sealed, but the inside (the part where you actually pound the pills into powder) is rough, not finished. So, as you can imagine, the pills are ground into the rock face and seals into the side. This causes several significant problems.... you lose some amount of the pills every time because it binds into the rock surface and stays locked in, and you also mix in the various pills as you mash them (you don't end up with pure pill ingredients as you mash multiple pills). All that you have to do is switch and finish/seal the INSIDE of the bowl and leave the OUTSIDE in a raw form.... otherwise this isn't really usable if you have any significant standards you have to meet.

Looks Good, Is Solid, and Holds a Lot

I've only had this item for a day but have already tried it out and it's exactly what I had hoped for. It was part of a multi-item shipment that was packed a little sloppily so the little manufacturer's box was sliding around inside the larger Amazon box; it was a bit beaten up, and the top was actually open. Luckily, the mortar & pestle were relatively well cushioned and came through unscathed.
This set is a lot heavier than expected, which is actually a plus; it tends to stay put while in use and the apparent solidity speaks for a long period of being useful. Everything came through clean, so I gave it just a careful rinse with warm water & then dried it with a towel before the first use. (What's nice about marble is that you don't need to "season" it before use like granite.) Despite the small size, it holds a great deal so work goes faster with less mess. The only negative is that the wide, thick lip makes it difficult to pour its contents into a smaller jar or glass when the grinding is done; a folded piece of clean, stiff paper was all the help needed to solve this problem.
All in all, my short-term reaction is that I'm very happy with my purchase.

Wow, I'm surprised how good this thing is especially for the price.

It's very solid, and heavy. That's a good thing! It's really nice marble, just like in the pics. It's more massive than I expected, even though the dimensions given are accurate. That's a good thing!

I use this mash up and pulverize resins that I burn in order to make my room smell like what I imagine Christ's armpit to smell like during prayer. Very effective for that.

Perfect for my borax cone I use to solder silver. In some countries a borax cone and dish are commonly used as a flux for soldering and I wanted to go that route for my flux. Finding a dish was problematic. The couple/ few actual borax dishes I found were obnoxiously expensive so I was looking for an alternative. I needed something that was slightly textured so that I could add a bit of water and grind down the cone a small bit at a time. Having a slightly rough texture was key. This set has been perfect. I remember there were people asking about how rough it is on the inside. It's kind of hard to explain but rubbing my finger inside reminds me of touching a brick in a way. It has a coarseness to it but not overly so.

If having a smooth inside is important this is not for you. If you don't care or if you need something that is slightly coarse this is perfect. I only use the dish (can't remember which is called which) I don't use the _______ (handle? mortar? pestle? don't know which is which). I just add a splash of water inside and rub my borax cone inside against the bottom which has enough coarseness to help dissolve the cone into a slurry.

The set is also beautiful and has a nice substantial weight and feel to it. It would look great in any kitchen. It looks better in person. Very happy.

And in the off chance you are looking for flux get a borax cone. They are $8-12 and will last for years (thousands and thousands of solder joints), never expire, you can't spill it, and generally are seen as safer than whatever liquid chemicals exists. Plus it works great.

I've only used this once, so if I have any problems later I'll update.

A lot of the one star reviews talked about the food/pills getting stuck in the groves. I don't know why they need to grind the pills into a fine powder. That's the only way I see that it would get stuck. I also haven't seen any of the marble chip away into what I was grinding. Then again I was grinding egg shells to into my garden.

The size is decent. I was able to place 5 hand crushed shells in & grounded them more from there. I didn't need to but I wanted to see how fine I could grind the shells for other herbs I plan on using &They need to be powered. I think it worked really well. I attached pictures with the bowl in my hand. There are only 3 whole shells fire these pictures. I tried 5 later. I was out back while the kids played so I just held everything in my hands. For comparison my hand span is 8" from thumb to pinkie tips.

REFURBISHED, NOT NEW! Health and safety concern- glue

This is a HEALTH and SAFETY CONCERN- EVERYTIME I USE THIS I'M AT RISK FOR PIECES OF THAT GLUE TO GO INTO MY MEDICINALS AND MY BODY.

Look at all the reviews of all the broken pieces... This company took all those returns back, glued them back together with a type of white epoxy glue (who knows how toxic that is) and resell them. This company or product needs to stop selling USED and REFURBISHED products. No glue should EVER be used near medicinals. Glue is TOXIC!! Very disappointed the entirety of my pestle is cracked all the way around and glued back together. (I barely noticed it, I thought something was off, but I couldn't really ever tell what it was until I checked out some other reviewers responses and I figured it out. I saw a reviewer say her husband worked in stone and realized her mortar and pestle was glued back together... Mine was too.

I have a chronic illness, I CANNOT be around glue or toxic products. EVERYTIME I USE THIS I'M AT RISK FOR PIECES OF THAT GLUE TO GO INTO MY MEDICINALS AND MY BODY. I already have health issues. This is a serious issue and needs to be resolved. The fact that these are still being refurbished then sold, and people are being lied to is unacceptable. Please remove, this is a HEALTH CONCERN and DANGEROUS. Now I'm trying to figure out if on the days I've used the refurbished, glued back together mortar and pestle, if those have been the days my symptoms have been extreme? I'd heed IMMENSE caution if Amazon doesn't remove this product or company. If you use this and then sell the products you've made in it, you could be hurting someone's health or triggering life threatening symptoms if they are allergic to glue. Something needs to be done about this. This is a HEALTH and SAFETY CONCERN- Glue!!

The first package that arrived had a broken pestle, but the second came just three days later and was fully intact. The inside of the mortar and the larger (bottom) edge of the pestle are both rough - this is to allow for friction and thus grinding, but can result in staining if you do not clean them promptly after use.
