4.0 out of 5 starsversatile young jackfruit for meatless, low cal, high fiber options. Artichoke like taste plain
Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2022
I like jackfruit. I am not vegan or vegetarian, but I try to incorporate a lot of plant based meals into my life. I have been eating jackfruit on and off for years, just depends on pricing. I very recently bought this for $10, and I came back to buy more but saw that it has increased over 100% in price. Nope. I dont rate on price, so if this looks good to you go for it.

edit 08/2022: LMAO-- and I just saw it went up again--up 400% to nearly $50 HAHAHAH, nah, I'll wait. That's around $10 PER POUND. jfc..

Canned jackfruit is easier, stores longer. I may go back to that. This is a big pack that will need to be used up quickly or repackaged and stored. It will freeze fine. Or go ahead and do your own canning with it.

I soak it, then marinade it. The go to recipe for anyone new to using jackfruit is "pulled pork". It really works well in that manner as the mouth feel is nearly the same. These chunks are bigger and tougher than a lot of canned versions, so I will be trying this as a "stew". Can be tossed in slow cooker for "pulled pork" texture too.

Jackfruit is nice as a meat replacer, and/or as a means to take in volume without all the calories that go with it. Lots of fiber per serving, super low calories, modest amount of protein. I think jackfruit is worth trying at least once, and if you can find some good ways to use it you will then likely want to continue with it. BTW, young jackfruit is not sweet. That is what is used in meat replacement. Young jackfruit has a neutral, almost artichoke/olive taste. I like it, and it seems to take on other flavors very well.

I down rate only because my bag came with zero labeling. Just a bag of jackfruit. I hope this is accidental and not the norm.

3.0 out of 5 starsWho Wouldn't Want Vegan Fried Chicken? Tips, Tricks & Recipes

My Experience
Jackfruit in general is a great meat alternative as well as a soy alternative. I was looking for something to replace my love of fake, soy, chicken nuggets and stumbled upon “Fried Jackfruit Chicken Recipes”. I wanted to try out this version of Jackfruit and a canned version.
Once I received the package, I was eager to get to frying! With trial and error, I learned some tricks to make a jackfruit fried chicken, but the canned version is better than this.
Tip & Tricks & Recipes
• Once you open either canned or this bagged jackfruit, you want to rinse it well, and be careful to not make the chunks break apart too much. Don’t forget to remove any seeds you see.
• In a bowl, combine 2 vegetable bouillon cubes with 2-3 cups of warm water and dissolve. ( you can add other ingredients to the marinade if you like)
• Put the rinsed jackfruit into the bowl and allow to marinate for 45-60 mins.
• Remove jackfruit and use as you would like.
• SEE END FOR RECIPE
Packaging
The packaging was fine. Nothing special, no damage during shipping, it came in a metallic packaging, which looked like it was supposed to be vacuum sealed, but it was not.
Pros
• Large amount
• Quick shipping
Cons
• You have to use it quickly in order for it to be fresh.
• Most of the jack fruit seemed to be hard, from the brine.
Summary
The quality is average. You do get a lot of product for what you are paying. I did not like this jackfruit. I thought the flavor is completely different than canned jackfruit and if you are cooking for smaller amounts, then most of the jackfruit in this bag will go to waste. I do not think I will be using this product again, I will buy the canned version I was lucky enough to find in my local store.
Recipe
• After following instructions listed above you want to season your jackfruit. (for 14 oz of jackfruit)
o 3 tsp of salt
o 1 tsp of pepper
o 2-3 tsp of paprika powder
o 2-3 tsp of garlic powder
o 2-3 tsp of onion powder
o ½ tsp of cayenne powder
o 1/8 tsp of rosemary
o 1/8 tsp of thyme
• What ever ingredients you like to taste, you can not go wrong with adding them. You can get a smokier flavor if you want to do BBQ jackfruit by adding some liquid smoke or smoked paprika.
• Mix together those ingredients and evenly coat the jackfruit chunks and place them on parchment paper on a baking sheet and stick them in the oven at 350 for about 20 mins, it helps dry out the jackfruit for a better texture.
• Preparing the wet batter:
o 1 cup of almond milk ( or another non dairy option)
o 1 tbs of apple cider vinegar
o ½ - ¾ cup of flour (start with less because you can add more)
o ½ tsp baking soda
o 1 tbs salt
• Preparing the dry batter
o Left over seasonings that you used on your jackfruit
o 1 cup flour
o 2 tbs cornstarch
o You can add other spices if you would like to the dry batter
• Dip the jackfruit in the mixed wet batter and then into the dry batter
• Once you are ready, heat up a oil of your choice that is suitable for high temperatures
• Make sure the oil is hot enough so the jack fruit does not absorb more oil than is needed.
• Place the coated jackfruit in the pan (carefully because the oil will spit)
• Let cook until golden brown 2-4 mins depending on size and heat.
• Take them out carefully and put on a paper towel to get off excess oil.
• I like my super crispy so I let them get more of the brown side, rather than golden.
ENJOY!

I love that it looks and feels like cube beef. I did minimal soaking( 1hrs & drain) The texture was spot on for beef stew with loads of fresh veggies cooked in a crook pot!! I like my food spicy and this takes on the flavors very well.. I froze the extras and they cooked up just like 1st opened once I thawed it out!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The 70oz ends up being 25oz after removing seeds, cooking & baking
Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2022

**Most important to know is that you should make the whole package at once, to save yourself a LOT of time. It takes time to marinate, shred & dry out. If you don't dry it out, it'll tast & have the texture of bottle artichoke hearts. Also, it is dark, but nothing wrong with that.***

Tasting this jack fruit right out of the package reminded me of artichokes in a glass jar. They ae wet, but the texture is quite literally like artichoke hearts in water. They do shred nicely, just like pulled pork. I was not fond of the brine-ish taste, so I soaked them in plain water at first. Then, let them sit overnight in very savory veggie broth, which drew out that canned taste (even though they are sealed in plastic & not canned). They took the broth flavor well.

As I shredded them with my fingers, I noticed there were a lot of seeds. I did not like the texture of most of the seeds, because they didnt break down so well, after being chewed, just like the harder parts of an artichoke heart, so I tossed them. After shredding, I squeezed out the broth, to speed up the drying out phase, and to get that jarred taste out. I made a general flavoring sauce with veggie broth & sauteed garlic, a splash of soy sauce & some umami flavor of miso paste. Thickened that and poured it over the jack fruit, cooked for a few minutes, then let it dry out in the oven til it was a little crispy the other pieces were more meaty. Then, to get a better texture, I put it in fron of the fan til it had the desired texture.

All in all, it was pretty labor intensive, but it tasted wayyy better than it did coming out of the package. But, throwing out the seeds and drying it out made me lose 45 ounces!!! I guess it's not that expensive compared to the canned version, and it did yield quite a bit. I'd recommend making the whole pack at a time, because it's a lot of work just for a couple meals. I went pretty general, so I'd have a ready made product that I could throw in anything.

please know that shredding this whole package will take about 20-30 min, so do it with a helper & some wine!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good alternative
Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2020
Flavor Name: UnseasonedSize: 70.4 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
This was my first time trying jackfruit as a meat alternative. I wanted to keep it simple so I went with tacos. I sauteed the fruit in a little oil with onions and bell peppers and used McCall's taco seasoning. I was a little concerned about the color because jackfruit doesn't start out brown. It wasn't slimy and there was no rotting fruit taste so I suspect that is the color to expect. I put the small white dish on the bag in the third photo so you can see what color it was. It smelled fine and was loose when I opened the package. Ultimately it was yummy on my tummy with no G.I. repercussions.

I would say that the seller's description of meatless alternative was more spot-on than descriptions that say its a meat substitute. The texture was much nicer than tofu and while it lacked the chewiness of meat, it had a good mouthfeel anyway. It was textured more like hearts of palm or artichoke. As a taco, it had an appealing look to it, sort of like pulled beef, but it lacked the richness of meat, so consider adding more cumin and garlic like I did to bump the flavor without the sodium. Straight from the bag, it tasted bland with a slight undertone of sweetness. I am a savory girl so I used savory seasonings and it eliminated that sweetness. The blandness is an asset in this product because you can make tacos, soups, BBQ sandwhiches, rice bowls, etc. with it and it will take the flavor of whatever seasoning you are using.

I asked around about the latex bit (because I have an allergy). Some said that fresh jackfruit would likely make me sick if I didn't know how to prepare it properly. Others said similarly that I should get it already prepared in a can or vacuum sealed and that if it was prepared properly there wouldn't be latex in it. For those of you with latex allergies, this did not irritate my skin, throat, or stomach.

Lastly, I really liked the price of this. There aren't many clean meats on the market nowadays that you can get 4.4lbs for 14 bucks. Typically I see meat alternatives cleaning out the pockets of vegans and vegetarians everywhere, with prices frequently double that of the original animal product. Additionally, this is definitely a better alternative to meat than an overpriced, over-processed, hunk of gluten. I was a pretty big bag so I won't be needing any for a while but this will definitely be a repeat purchase.

I was very much on the fence about ordering this jackfruit after reading a number of reviews from people stating the contents were brown, had no taste, etc. I read a lot of the posted reviews and decided to give it a try. The package arrived timely and in good condition. This is not like canned jackfruit. It is not white! It is brown in color. There wasn’t much of a smell, either. It looks a lot like cubed beef.
Other reviewers stated that the contents should be used or frozen after opening. I divided the bag of fruit into thirds and vacuum sealed it into two packages and put in the freezer for other dinners. The rest I put into cold water to cover and let sit overnight. The next morning I drained it and pressed it to remove as much moisture as possible. Since it was brown and I didn’t know if this was going to stain, I worked with it in an old Tupperware container. I planned to use this to make jackfruit pulled “pork”. I sprinkled it with about two good tsp of green chile powder and some salt and pepper. As I stirred it to coat, some cubes started to break up and I was able to pick out a lot of the seed pods. There were a lot more than when I cooked canned, brined jackfruit. As per the recipe I used, I cooked it in a frypan in oil, then added 2/3 c of barbecue sauce and 2 c of water. I cooked this for about 55 min. Since this fruit is brown, there was no white fruit showing as with canned. It looks like browned meat. After the sauce thickened up I removed it from heat and stored it in the fridge. We had it for supper tonight on buns topped with coleslaw and it was delicious!
Next time I use this jackfruit in a bag I will not cook it so long. It doesn’t need it. I probably won’t soak it overnight either. One reviewer soaked her batch three days, changing the water every day. At this point, I don’t see the need for this. A good rinse, followed by a short soak and another rinse should be fine. Depending on the size of your household, you should get at least three meals from a bag. We will get six, possibly seven since there are just two of us. Flavor (it’s takes on the sauce and spices you add) and versatility get five stars, as does freshness.

Excellent product.

Never having ordered this before, I was expecting it to look like canned jackfruit - white and in brine - but this is different. If you too have not used this before, here is what to expect:

It is packaged in foil without additional fluids, and it has a dry look with a brown color. But, it is not dry, but nor is it slippery wet. There are no added fluids, and it is the consistency of the freshly pared fruit. The brown color you might assume is a mistake or turned rancid, but it is not. According to company webpages, "Most jackfruit contains preservatives and additives, but ours is 100% jackfuit! Due to oxidation and no preservatives our jackfruit is brown in color, making it even meatier!" That is correct. Think of it like an apple that has browned some. It is not like a browned banana that has gotten mushy, nor an exposed avocado that turns brown and bitter. The taste and freshness of this product are preserved despite the color.

Consistent with it being the unripened fruit, the taste is a bit acidic or sour, but also a bit fruity or flowery. Unlike yellow sweet ripened jackfruit, it does not otherwise have a distinctive flavor, just that subtle slightly sour fruitiness. This is why it works well to mimic meats or anything else you might wish, because it will adopt whatever spices and seasonings you add without fighting against its own taste.

I used my first 4.4 pound bag to make barbecue. Taste and texture were nearly identical to shredded meat barbecues, which was all a function of the spices and sauces that were added (I made my own, but your favorite bottled barbecue sauce would work just the same). That slightly sour floral taste of the jackfruit came through a bit, but if you do not approach this as "vegan pulled pork", instead just accept it on its own terms as barbecue sauce jackfruit, it is fantastic. Personally for me, I liked it better, and if I were at a picnic or restaurant and was offered a shredded meat barbecue slider versus the same with jackfruit, I would take the jackfruit every time. My first batch using about a pound of the fruit was a big hit, and I soon used the rest of the bag for the same recipe. Now, I am curious to see how it does with other dishes.

If you need the jackfruit to be a lighter color for a certain dish, then canned varieties would be better, but for darker dishes or where color is irrelevant, the taste and texture of this is comparable to canned jackfruit (but a bit fresher). This product has the advantage that there is no waste - no brine to discard - you are paying for 4.4 pounds of fully usable product.

I was very pleased with the product and the value for the money. I have added it to my Amazon grocery list for easy reordering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vegan beef

Flavor Name: UnseasonedSize: 70.4 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
Great product especially for vegan beef with the right seasoning/ best to drain before using and pan fry in a lil oil. It seems dry but the jackfruit hold a good amount of water. Other then the price constantly changing. Good buy!
