DON'T GET THIS HDD, GET SSD INSTEAD

I screwed up. Thought I had SSD and it was HDD. That's my screw up. I was on autopilot when I bought it, opened the package, and connected to my device, so I'm not going to ding the company with a low review for my screw up. BUT it's always worth it to spend extra get and SSD drive. They are WAY better, more durable, and as a result often longer lasting, which is what you want in an external storage device.

It transfers data about the same speed as my passport ultra, but I'm very disappointed that it does not have password protection, though I swore I read reviews that said it did. I installed the tools software, but it is not listed in there. I'm currently using Veracrypt with it now, but you can't increase the size of the folder, if you need to make it bigger later on. I'm not crazy about the bright orange either. It does seem well built though. I might return it if I can find another 5TB rugged drive with password protection.

Perfect for Off-line Storage

I purchased this back in Dec 2020 and still use it today. I own a MAC and the Ext HDD works perfectly with a MAC OS. I format in ExFat. I store a lot of video files for customers in Cloud Storage and offline/off site with this device. The drive comes with a USB-C cable and at times I've had to wiggle the cable to get the OS to recognize the HDD. I use a different USB-C cable.

Only 4 Stars because of this hoop I had to jump through. I ordered this 4TB drive last week and it was delivered faster than expected. I have been using LaCie Backup Drives for years with NO problems. My latest drive came with "Tool Kit", which I, following the instructions, installed. I then experienced some glitches. My drive took a long time to mount. Then disappeared off my desktop. I had to unplug, then re-attach and it appeared. Though not right away. The only problems I have encountered on my new 2019 laptop (I use a MacBook Pro) has been caused by third party software. Especially things that end up in System Preferences (like Tool Kit). I uninstalled Tool Kit from my System Preferences and have had NO problems since. Tool Kit doesn't do anything your Disk Utilities can't. I recommend not installing this. If you have problems, run your Disk Utilites (or whatever PC computers offer) or contact Customer Support. Hope this helps.
Addendum December 2021: It appears problems I had with drive "disappearing" off desktop also due to bad cord that comes with the drive. This is sad that a good product is accompanied by a cheap USB-C cable. I bought a new one off Amazon and connectivity much better. Provide better cables La Cie!

5TB model shortcomings

I have generations of LaCie drives and love them. My previous one was 2TB drive that I filled up already. I decided to get 5TB as the next model. I am disappointed because 5TB model only includes USB-C cable (in comparison 2TB model included both USB-C and regular USB cable as two options). I essentially have to poach a cable from my 2TB drive to be able to connect the new one to the computer. Additionally, 5TB is bigger in physical size of the drive (you can say, duh, but 2TB was actually the same size/weight or even slimmer than previous models with less capacity). I also experience inconsistent performance from it on Windows 10. 5TB model takes longer to pop up in File Explorer. The transfer speeds are all over the place from 1MB/sec to 40MB/sec with my older 2TB model always around 30MB/sec on average. Bottom line, I still recommend LaCie, just not their 5TB edition. In retrospect I wish I just ordered another 2TB.

I love that this drive is lightweight yet rugged when it comes to drops and spills etc, because that will happen a lot here. I also LOVE the ease of use and really nothing to learn about to use it. Basically, plug and play with a small download.

HOWEVER, I did not like that there was no cable included for USB-C to USB-A. For the kind of money I spent, I would like to see the company include at least an adapter for this type of connection. I almost sent a great drive back due to this exclusion (and in fact, had the return ready to go), then I decided to contact a well-known retailer that deals with computers and accessories. They guided me to a cable that works, but had the adapter been included, I wouldn't have had to jump through the hoops and delay the project by another two days until someone could go pick up the cable. So if you are in this same situation, order an adapter or USB-C to USB-A cable when ordering this drive. You will be glad you did.

All-in-all, I'm very happy that, in the end, I chose to find another way to keep this drive and am very happy with the performance of it overall.
