After a lot of research I decided on the Osprey Fairview 40 for a month long backpacking trip through Europe and I love this backpack! On my return home it nicely fit 6 T-shirts, 12 blouses, 2 pairs of jeans, 9 pairs of shorts, 2 dresses, 3 bikinis, 1 pair of sandals, 1 small towel, 2 books, a small make-up bag, a ziplock of liquids, and other miscellaneous items. To say the least it was pretty heavy, but still comfortable enough to carry for a 1-2 miles (for reference I am 5'5" and 125 lbs). Its was also great for carry-on, I had no problem on Delta, Norwegian, and Turkish Airlines.

Loved using this backpack in Europe for a little over two weeks. We bought it (and the Osprey Farpoint 40 for my husband) to meet the requirements of the smaller intra-European airlines such as Alitalia and EasyJet. It was well within the restrictions, and they didn't give us any trouble at all! The internal and external compression straps are a great bonus if you're pushing the allowable dimensions. An added bonus of the compression straps is that, if you take care, the zippers can be hidden underneath the straps so you don't have to worry so much about pickpockets on packed trains and buses -- beware!
I have always been an over-packer, but knowing I had size and weight restrictions led me to buy this pack. I was easily able to take what I needed for our 16-day trip with room left for a few souvenirs on the way back. Despite my inexperience in using a backpack, this was so much easier than rolling a suitcase over cobblestone streets and the pedestrian bridges (most with stairs) in Venice. The pack itself weighs so little that I was easily able to heft it into the overhead bins on the plane, unlike a suitcase. I am a petite woman at 5'1" and this pack was very comfortable on my frame. I'm a convert!

XS/S is not a smaller pack

I ordered both sizes XS/S and S/M in the rainforest green so I could do a side by side comparison. The XS/S is supposed to be a smaller pack, which I thought would be better since some European airlines only allow a 19" size. The problem is, both packs were 21"! The only difference was the shoulder straps on the XS/S were sewn lower, so the space between the belt and the top of the shoulder straps was shorter. This made the pack sit higher up than normal on the XS/S. If I had a hair clip holding my hair up, the back of the XS/S pack forced my head forward. It just wasn't balanced, either, when compared to the S/M with the straps sewn in the usual spot. I tried both packs out fully loaded to see. See photos of strap placement on both packs.

There was also another difference in the shoulder straps, the XS/S had specialized Osprey clips to attach something else, while the S/M had elastic sewn across that could be used to attach something to it. Osprey changed systems so the older model has clips and the newer ones have the elastic.

I ended up returning both, since a 19" size would have been my preference due to airline restrictions.

If I were to keep one, I would have kept the S/M due to the shoulder strap placement making the pack ride more comfortably. I am 5'2" and according to the Osprey fitting chart with my torso length either size would work.

After much research, I settled on this backpack for my 2 wk kayaking/hiking/"glamping" trip to the Galapagos Islands December 2017. Paired with a much smaller, lighter daypack from REI, I had exactly what I needed and included mask/snorkel/fins, binoculars and camera equipment. There was even room for some clothing I brought back as gifts. I am 5'3", 60 year old adventurer. Ecuador was country #28. I haven't checked a bag since the '90s so I am VERY picky about my carry-on gear. In the past, I had always used an overhead rollaway but those were not permitted on this particular tour. I am VERY pleased with this pack. The heaviest it got was 25 lbs but felt like nothing with the waist belts and shoulder harnesses.

3 week Central Asia trip

Purchased after much research. Used it for 3 week Central Asia trip, kept it to the strict 8kg carry on limit for European flights.
I am a 5'4", 130lbs female. When fully loaded at 8kg I realized it was a bit heavy but hip belt really helps in distribution of weight. Able to fit 2 pants, 2 thin sweaters, 4 short sleeved/2 long sleeved t-shirts, 5 socks/5 underwear, hiking boots, umbrella, small first aid kit, quart sized bag of toiletries, packable Gonex 40L backpack, travel guide and a Canon DSLR with lens and camera bag. Highly recommend using 2 medium sized packing cubes for clothing. Also recommend purchasing a cable lock instead of regular luggage lock, makes it easier to lock zippers on both compartments together.

I purchased this bag back in November, but wanted to get a few months of use in before I reviewed it. I want to start by saying that I am 5'6", and have an athletic build with wide-ish hips. I travel every weekend for work, so I needed something extremely convenient and reliable. After weeks of research, I finally settled on this Osprey pack. Unfortunately, it hasn't been as convenient as I was hoping, however, that fact is more personal and less product. That being said, here are my pros and cons:

CONS:

-- There are 2 mesh pockets on the front, which would be great to carry a water bottle (or anything really) in. But when the bag is packed, there's no way anything will fit in them unless it's a credit card or another item that thin.
-- Each time I take the pack off or on, the right strap (above the shoulders) slides down, so I have to continually readjust it. Even when tightened all the way, they don't fit snuggly against me. They don't seem to get tight enough for my average-shaped shoulders.
-- When I tighten the pack on my hips/waist using the waist straps, it causes the shoulder straps to loosen a bit, so the pack continually bounces around on my shoulders. It may be an issue with the fitting, but I've tried a variety of adjustments, and even had others adjust it for me, and it still bounces. It bounces no matter what.
-- This bag naturally curves, so when you attempt to put a laptop/notebook/book in the laptop pocket, it's really difficult. My books always come out with a new curve to them, so I don't trust it to protect my laptop thoroughly.

PROS

-- 4 ways to carry it (by the top with a handle, on the side with a handle, as a backpack, or by a shoulder strap)

-- Depending on how full the pack is, it will fit under the airplane seat (when this happened, I had 2 days worth of clothing + cosmetics -- no shoes).

-- Slides easily into the overhead compartment in the airplane, with no struggle, even if packed overfull.

-- Because it opens fully like a suitcase, it's very easy to pack and remove items from.

-- There are tightening straps both on the inside and on the outside. They are very well made and of high quality, so I never feel bad about pulling on them, and/or shoving multiple things under them.

-- I have fit a total of 5 days worth of clothing in here (2 work shirts, 2 pairs of jeans, pajama bottoms and a top, a pair of tennis shoes, 2 extra shirts, 2 sweatshirts, socks, undies, and cosmetics). I'm continually impressed with how much can fit in here!

-- Great quality, doesn't feel cheap in any way, shape, or form.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this bag for frequent travel. After traveling consistently for 4 months, I've decided that a rolling suitcase would be more convenient for me. However, I will absolutely still be using this bag for smaller trips, and my shorter hiking trips.

Great Bag for Smaller/Shorter People

I got this backpack for a 2-week trip across Europe and have since returned home. Here are a few thoughts I have about this 40 size bag from actual user experience.

Comfortable: I'm a smaller girl, about 5'4", hence the reason I got the 40 and not the 55. I had about 10kg+ stuffed into this bag, but it felt like maybe half that weight. Using both the waist and sternum straps significantly make carrying heavier loads much easier. I felt completely comfortable carrying this bag on long walks through airports and cities.

Carry-on Friendly: I was able to carry this bag onto every plane, including the smaller airlines like Ryanair. The attached picture is from a Ryanair flight. I only checked this bag once because it was early AM and I didn't want to deal with it on the plane. I also cannot stress how much I love the back panel that hides the shoulder straps. It made putting the bag in overhead compartments much easier.

Storage Capacity: For what it is, the 40 holds a lot of stuff. I made the mistake of over-packing (like I always do), and this bag still held all my junk. Clothes, flat iron, small shoes, toiletries, you name it. But I had very little room for any souvenirs or new clothes bought on this trip. I often felt regret that I didn't pick up the 55 bag instead. However, I honestly can't wait for my next trip when I can pack smarter. Consider what you will be packing and what you might be bringing back with you when you decide between bag sizes. I definitely think the 40 is sufficient for a longer backpacking trip if you pack smartly, just know you might be a little limited.

Despite some small regret that I didn't get the 55 bag, I definitely love this Fairview 40. Bags like this are a great investment if you plan on backpacking anywhere, especially if those cities are known for cobblestones. It's perfect for smaller/shorter people, and it can hold a good bit of stuff while still being comfortable to wear for long durations. Just honestly consider your needs before settling on the size before you buy.

Took on 2-week vacation and it was perfect!

I went to Europe for 2 weeks. No backpacking or anything - the hubby and I just wanted to pack really light and be able to get around easily since we were road tripping and staying in each location for about one day at a time. This bag was perfect. I specifically purchased it because it's the right size to be a carry-on for RyanAir (and they're pretty strict about bag sizes). The bag is comfortable to carry around, either as a backpack or as a shoulder bag. I kept my clothes in vaccuum pack bags in the large compartment and was able to add souvenirs and other things I needed in the various other sections. I'm glad I bought this! I'll be going on vacation with it again.

I am a 5'3" woman who travels a lot and likes to travel light. I was looking for a carry-on sized backpack that was comfortable to carry, easy to pack/unpack, and small enough to fit easily in overhead bins. After a lot of research, I decided that Osprey was the way to go. I tried the following Osprey bags:

1) Osprey Packs Porter 46 Travel Backpack, Mineral Teal, One Size
2) Osprey Packs Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack, Volcanic Grey, Small/Medium
3) Osprey Packs Fairview 40 Travel Backpack, Rainforest Green, Small/Medium

I initially bought the Porter and the Farpoint to do a side-by-side comparison, because they were priced comparably on Amazon (~$135 for each). To test, I loaded each one with a "full load" of mixed items, books, clothing, etc. I then donned the backpacks, adjusted the straps, and proceeded to walk around my bedroom a few turns.

I was able to eliminate the Porter as a contender pretty quickly by doing this test. I found that the Porter did not have the internal support for significant weight. When fully loaded, the plastic backboard "buckled" and pressed against my lower back in an uncomfortable way. So I returned in the Porter. One note is that I did like the internal design of the Porter better, but I just couldn't justify keeping it when it was so uncomfortable to carry.

Around this time, the Fairview went on sale, and I was able to snag it for a mere $120 (~$40 cheaper than it is currently listed on Amazon). I purchased the Fairview and proceeded to perform the same load test to compare it to the Farpoint. This was a more difficult decision, as the Fairview and Farpoint are almost identical. But I found the Fairview adjusted a little easier to my small frame and the hip belt sat a little more comfortably. This mirrored what I had read in reviews, so eventually I decided to return the Farpoint and keep the Fairview.

I've used it on a couple of weekend trips so far, and have really enjoyed it. It's lightweight and easy to carry, but also easy to access the internal compartments. I'll be taking it on a week-long trip to Turkey soon, where I will be using lots of public transport and getting on and off planes several times. I'm looking forward to putting this back through its paces and seeing how it handles a longer trip.

Not a brand new bag...

My item arrived tarnished... it was previously in somebody's else's household before it was sent to me. Normally I wouldn't mind that, but for a $160 backpack, I expect the product to be at least brand new and somewhat perfect. When I opened the box I noticed that the backpack was sloppily shoved into the plastic wrap and was not completely inside of the plastic. I didn't care much about it. I also noticed that all of the straps were uneven and the zippers were undone, but it wasn't until I saw a small hole in the front mesh pocket that bothered me. Then, I flipped the backpack over and saw that one of the straps were permanently bent into an angle. It was uneven with the other strap. The OCD person inside of me went insane. Lastly, at the bottom of the bag I noticed that there were fur/dog hairs that originated from the previous owner's dog. Or maybe somebody is letting a dog run loose at the shipping center. Anyways, I am in the process of returning this bag and purchasing another one. I was so, so, soooo excited for this bag....hopefully the next one is untouched.
