Ultimately a love story. Emma Thompson's eyes alone make Alone in Berlin worth watching a second time. We do not see enough of Daniel Bruhl. I just might have to watch Goodbye Lenin! for the 20th time.

I wished I had not paid seven dollars to rent this movie. Though the acting was great and the 1940's wartime atmosphere fit the cinematographic generic bill, the story line was rather flat. Perhaps I was still impacted by the raw drama and deep feeling tone of war time cruelty in The Innocents-- Amazon Prime, by the way. It seemed unbelievable that the stunning grief of losing an only child would not be portrayed with more depth, unless the writing of the cards was the only way they could grieve. As this is a true story, I am loathe to believe the Hollywood ending as a documented fact. It seemed to be an embellishment aimed to strike a sentimental chord but it was embarrassing, really.

I read the book upon this movie was based. Film very accurately portrayed the isolation of the couple and the paranoia of those around them.
