Not as much humor as his normal writing, but an interesting thought experiment. It hangs a lampshade on the absurdity of the premise by having the characters themselves discuss how strange it is that no one questions people coming back from being murdered by disappearing and showing up naked in their own bed. The mystery of how to kill people in a world where murdered people return from the dead, is resolved by the end of the book; the "why" and "how" the returning happens is not.

Regardless, it was a fun piece of detective noir set in an otherwise modern time period. Be forewarned, it is not a long work, more of a novella. A bit pricey for the length, but not a bad purchase.

Strictly speaking this is fantasy rather than science fiction. It combines a mystery with a single fantasy premise. Otherwise everything about the setting is contemporary early 21st century (i.e. Now). With a little editing it might have been able to make setting cover anytime from 1950 to 2015. What is especially appealing is that that one premise changes the "world" in a big way. I won't describe that more as it would be a spoiler. Combining detective fiction with fantasy or SF is tricky - Scalzi has the nack

I had the privilege of hearing John read the first chapter in August 2015 during an author event, and had awaited the resolution of the story rather anxiously ever since. With this being the first time I have experienced *any* story via audio, though, I was hesitant and a little uneasy, even though this would be a story by one of my very favorite authors conveyed by one of my very favorite actors. All of those worries are now gone and I am a New Believer in the power of the audiobook.
As a long-time reader and fan of Scalzi's work, I am impressed yet again with his leaps of imagination, grasp of scene description (which takes you there, but never makes you get bored with someone who is counting the windows), and as always, his very cool and remarkable application of logical creativity to the point where the twist is suddenly applied in a forehead-slappingly obvious, but non-insulting, way. Quinto's voice is indeed a perfect path to sharing the gritty agnostic optimism of Tony and all of the supporting characters.
Sequel, more stories, anything .. please? :-)

The premise behind this book is weird and impossible seeming. But the author through great writing and desire to show the logical conclusion to the idea is able to say something important about living as a human. Suspending disbelief can be a meaningful art form.

I liked this book.

It has an interesting premise and you don't know what it is for a while, which is a good use of tension/curiosity.

It was well written, and kept me turning pages.

The only issue I have with Scalzi's recent work is that it is all too short. He's become more of a short-story author, but I really really enjoyed his full-length books like the Old Man's War series.

Just a brilliant short (100 page) non-murder mystery. Using a bizarre and unexplained premise, Scalzi puts together a tightly-wound little thriller. Enjoyable, and leaves you wanting more.

This all-too-short book takes a notion that's pure fantasy -- as of a certain day, for no apparent reason, almost everyone who's murdered returns to life -- and gives it a noir-esque treatment. The combination works very well indeed. I hope, hope, hope that Scalzi will return to this setting and protagonist.

Scalzi does not disappoint. I'm not sure he can. This is a wonderful slightly noir story about a world like ours with one small difference: murder victims come back instantly to a place they love -- almost every time.

It's a short read but the story is so interesting I think I'll ponder it for some time. Sometimes felt like old school Walter Mosley (without the steamy scenes). This is a good one.

Most excellent.
As usual, Scalzi does an outstanding job crafting a story out of a silly premise.

I only wish it was a novel, and not just a short story.
