5.0 out of 5 starsGreat wide lens from Nikon
Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2017
I'm using this new lens on a Nikon D5300 with the latest firmware update and everything works just fine. When attached to the D5300 camera, a new menu appears that controls the VR from the camera as there are no physical switches on the lens itself.
I like it because it has vibration reduction (VR) so photos come out sharp when hand-held. It's also light weight, quiet and has fast focus. The photos look good. This is a useful lens for indoors - to catch everything inside a room - and for outdoors for those deep, wide scenic shots. One of the best things about this lens is it allows me to have a quality, true wide-angle lens at an affordable price. It comes with a US warrantee, front and rear lens caps, front lens hood and a soft carrying bag. Hats off to Amazon who delivered this lens just 20 hours after purchase.

3.0 out of 5 starsJust too soft
Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2017
I had been in the market for an ultra wide for some time now. I had my eye on a Tokina 11-20 2.8 but the price tag was keeping me from purchasing it. When nikon announced this lens I was ecstatic! Everything I wanted from a brand like nikon just seemed too good to be true. Apparently it was. Upon receiving the lens I went out shooting with it for the next couple of days. I was impressed by the wideness of 10mm (15mm FX equivalent) honestly it was almost too wide! When going into post I started noticing some problems. Corners were very soft at anything other than f8 or higher. It is to be expected by some cheaper uwa (sigma, tamron) but from a nikon product I was quite disappointed. The vr seemed to work well but not quite what was expected. I opted to return and get the tokina 11-20 And I couldn't be happier. For the non pixel peeper this lens is a great addition to your kit for a low price but if you want to get corner to corner sharpness at a low aperture this isn't the lens for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DX (APSC) lens for the price!
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2019
Style: Lens OnlyVerified Purchase
I'm a hobbyist in photography and this is my first ultra wide angle lens. It took me some time to learn how to use ultra wide lens but I absolutely love this lens. For around $300 it gives me great images and a lot of fun to use.

Pros:
- Optically superb, very sharp in landscape photography
- Fast and accurate auto focus thanks to the newer AF-P motor
- Smooth and quiet auto focus (compared to AF-S lenses)
- Close focusing distance
- Light weight and small size
- Lens hood included

No real cons for me but there are some limitations:
- Maximum aperture F/4.5-5.6, which is not good for low light, indoor, and astro photography.
- When using the built-in flash on my D5500, shooting at 10 mm there is a shadow of the lens in the image

Other notes:
- Unless you need to photograph people in low light or you want to do astro photograph, the small aperture will do just fine.
- I didn't use this lens extensively until I went on a family trip recently; Admittedly I have trouble in composition as the angle of view is too wide in some cases.
- I learned to get closer and take advantage of the close focus distance, then I started to really appreciate this little gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Light & Reasonably priced Sharp Wide Angle Lens
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2017
Style: Lens OnlyVerified Purchase
Very Light & relatively inexpensive wide angle lens. The range (15-30mm full frame equivalent) is true wide angle. Although there is some distortion (especially at extreme wide angle) it is no worse than other lenses of this genre. Be sure to check compatibility with your camera as this lens only works on Nikons manufactured in 2013 and later (and some of the earlier ones in that range require a firmware update).

Although the aperture range is a little on the slow side (f/4.5-5.6), the Vibration reduction (VR) should compensate for this by allowing a slower shutter speed. Sharpness is very good especially after 20mm (equiv) or so.

Obviously a lot of plastic is involved in producing this lens so light (8 ounces), but the lens feels reasonably solid. Really works well with the D5600.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't back up? This is the lens for you. Great Optics, very practical IMO..
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2018
Style: Lens OnlyVerified Purchase
I have had this lens for about 2 months now, I mainly do construction photography, and I am very happy with the results of the few hundred photos I have taken with it. I have a crop sensor D5500 and I do a lot of indoor photography for work and pleasure. This lens at the 20 mm setting is significantly wider than my standard kit 18-55mm lens at the 18 setting. So if you are in an environment where backing up isn't an option this lens is an ideal choice.

I also do a lot of panoramic photography in which I may take 5-10 shots and sew them together in photoshop, this lens has given me the ability to take 2-3 photos and sew them instead of 6-7. Or just take 1 instead of sewing 2-3 together.

I also find the distortion at the 10 setting visually attractive when shooting large buildings or vehicles, it give them a larger than life feel.

Optics are wonderful, crisp and auto focus is quick and accurate.

The lens hood is nice but basic, but be careful you cannot use the built in flash with it, it will create a shadow (same issue with many Lens hoods)

Shell
4.0 out of 5 stars Good lens for the money...
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2018
Style: Lens OnlyVerified Purchase
This review is from a photographers point of view. We are very picky, 5 stars would be very hard to get. First let me say that for the price this is absolutely worth the money! It's a good lens that you can work with to take fantastic pictures. By design though, it is limited. The next Nikkor lens up that can take ultra wide photos is $900. So it's my belief that Nikon did a great deed, by making this lens so that more people can afford it.

So, on with the review.

First let me warn you that this lens is small, very small, and super light. In fact it's smaller than my primes. The first impression is holy cow this thing is dinky. One the other hand it sure is nice to carry such a small lens...

2nd there is no rubber weather seal and the mount is plastic. In this aspect it's just like a cheap kit lens.

There are NO external switches. All of this (AF and VR) can be turned off with your camera though...

Be aware this new AF-P series of lens only works with newer cameras, some older cameras can have the firmware upgraded (free download from Nikon) to work with them. Make sure to check if your camera will work with it.

The zoom ring is large, and feels nice. The focus ring turns smooth, but its too thin for my liking. The focus is electronic, so turning the ring actually does not mechanically focus the lens (this is a big deal if you think you are going to use it manually with an old incompatible camera body, you aren't...)

It doesn't have great low light capabilities. In this aspect, again it's like a kit lens. It's not a deal breaker for most people.

The distortion is manageable, but really isn't the main purpose of an ultrawide to figure out how to take interesting pictures using distortion to your advantage? And then, there's boring landscapes...

I haven't really spoken about the image quality at all, that can be a difficult lengthy discussion that there just isn't really room for here. I will say that the image quality is good, better than most of the other 3rd party lenses. It is very sharp, only suffering a little at its widest. Vignetting is perhaps the biggest issue I have with the image quality. It's not bad, but certainy noticeable at 10mm when the subject is not super bright.

In conclusion. If you have always wanted an ultra wide but $900 was to much for you, consider this lens. If you need low light capability, will use this lens in a rough environment, have an incompatible camera, are a pro, or are just made of money, pass on this lens. I however will keep it and enjoy it for what it is, someday I might find that 10-24mm in a garage sale for $100, but until then this lens will do just fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable lens for real estate on the cheap!
Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020
Style: Lens OnlyVerified Purchase
This is really a hidden gem among Nikon's crop sensor lenses. I'm a professional photographer that shoots tourism, landmark, recreation and event photography who recently got into real estate. I shoot with a couple D7200 bodies. With proper technique on a tripod, mirror up mode, slower exposures, this lens produces very quality ultra wide angle photos, even indoors. I wasn't expecting much at first, but the more time you spend with this, you'll quickly learn not to underestimate it. The home photos in this review were of a recent $1.9M listing and the home owner and real estate agent were thrilled with the results. I've even been bringing the lens with me to get ultra wide shots of vistas from my kayak. If you don't have a big budget or just like your crop sensor bodies like I do, do not hesitate to give this lens a try if you have a use for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars IT WORKS.....

Came across this lens while looking for a wide angle lens for my D610. Its a DX lens, but i know the camera is capable of using them so i figured what did i have to lose at this price. So i QUICKLY purchased it. However, while i'm waiting for the delivery i start to do a little reading up on the lens. Long story short, on Nikon's website they state that this lens is totally incompatible with the D610. There was even a faq section where people would ask about cameras that were considered incompatible and the answer was always the same.. NO, not compatible. i read about firmware updates and lens control updates on the forums and decided i would give it a try. Updated both and then sat and waited for the delivery guy to arrive. Lens arrives... I put the camera in DX auto mode so it automatically would detect the lens and make its adjustments. And then put the lens on. And......... IT WORKED......... I thought.. i can take a photo but maybe it wont auto focus. But it did. I thught it wouldnt communicate with the camera correctly... But it did. Took a few photos the next day and discovered what this wide angle life was as all about. WOW... This lens is great. I'll definitely update when after i have had a little time with it..
