I ordered 2 of the 6000 series to go on a couple of catfish rods. Thus far after 2 weeks of use (5 outings) they are doing well and i would buy them again. The reels are smooth and quite pleasant to look at. I put them on a couple of of 10ft rippin lips catfish rods. Makes a great combo. I still haven't gotten used to the baitfeeder option so i still use a bell as a precaution and possibly just out of habit. But once i gain a bit more trust im sure all will be well. I will update through the coming season to see how they hold up. Thus far they haven't really been challenged as we have been catching mostly 5lb-10lb fish. Hopefully that will change. :) As of right now i would confidently buy them again. Lets hope it stays that way. 4/2/18
Having used this for a while now on 2 rigs i can say that it is a fine reel. However i cannot recommend it for Catfishing.
With large fish or medium sized fish or with good moving water the reel is geared to high and you really have to crank on it alot causing the body of the reel, especially the stem to flex... Alot!!!
This flex could easily cause it to break at the worst possible time. If it was geared lower to fight larger fish and the stem was much stronger it would be great but as it sits IMO i would look elsewhere. Not that this is a bad reel because its not, just not the right tool for this job. I have pulled them off the poles and went back to my Penn pursuit 2 8000 series. If anybody finds anything better for around the same money let me know. Lol
Since I had removed these from 2 of my catfishing rigs I wanted to try and find a place for these to perform well as I don't like having gear around that's not earning its keep. After trying quite a few different iterations I can say in my opinion that this reel has no place at all at least the 6000 series. The stem is too flexible and its too high geared for larger fish or flowing water. In smaller sizes 2000/3000/4000 it could be a good bass reel but the weight and the baitfeeder mechanism would be out of place and there are other better options for those. So overall not a bad reel, it just really has no place unless they fix the stem and lower the gearing a bit to be in line with the amount of drag that this reel is capable of. For catfishing (larger fish 13lb-15lb and up) and Flowing water look elsewhere. For smaller catfish (channel cats, bullhead etc...) it would be fine.
