Great scale for Chemex

With the silicone top, this scale works very nicely for brewing Chemex.

Pros:
* System is easy to use
* Washable silicone top protects the metal base
* Works nicely for other baking/cooking needs
* There's a small hole on the back for wall mounting when not in use

Cons:
* Turning off the system does not clear the timer. You need to stop and clear it before pressing & holding the power button.

Neutral:
* There's a transparent protector film on the screen and buttons, but you wouldn't know it until bubbles start forming underneath it.

I broke my own rule and it came back to bite me. I know never to trust the positive reviews here without reading the negatives. When there are a lot of them saying the same thing, you should know something's up. But I got suckered by a drastic sale price and jumped on it without thinking about where I was buying it from.

Reading is slow to respond in real time. Jumps around when it needs to be stable. Returns different values for the same object at different weighings.

Totally useless if you want precision, contrary to what ERAVSOW promises and despite all the positive "reviews" here. I checked after the fact to see if my experience was a fluke. It was not. Just about the only common point this didn't hit was breaking down prematurely, but I'm convinced that's only because I returned it first.

Maybe I got a defective one, or maybe not, but there's no way to calibrate it regardless, so back it goes. And having read this, you now can't say you weren't warned: this is garbage as far as I, and many others, are concerned. It's your dime if you fall for it too.

I'm using this as an ordinary kitchen scale not as a pour over coffee scale with timer so my review will reflect my usage. I bought because it measures to 0.1grams which is 10 times finer resolution than most kitchen scales like my beloved OXO that died after many years. I don't usually need that fine a resolution but I do need to know to the exact gram so by seeing tenths of a gram I can see exactly how close I am to that 1 gram diference. For example less exact scales aren't sensitive to tiny changes in weight so if you make several tiny additions to get a scale to register 1 more gram it isn't sensitive enough to register those tiny change so to see if you finally added enough flour to get to say 30 grams. With ordinary scakes you have to remove the item from the scale & reweigh the whole thing because a lesser scale just doesn't register tiny incremental additions or subsubtractions. That makes this scale actually accurate to the tiny amounts you add or subtract to get an exact weight in whole grams so its ten times better in my book for less money than my previous scale. The display is very stable, meaning a weight doesn't jump up & down a few times before it settles on the true weight which is exactly how scales should work and its fast. I think the trade off for this increased accuracy is that its upper weight limit is less than the OXO & others but when making 1, 2, or 3 cakes or loaves you need to weigh small addition like salt and spices. If you need to weigh big slabs of meat this scales doesn't weigh heavy enough for that so compare how you will use the scale to it's listed specs when choosing. So far its been very consistent, stable & fast. Also the tare waorks well & quickly plus the auto shut off feature gives you enough time to handle distractions like checking the recipe or openibg a new bag of flour so that function also balances need with the econy of saving batteries. Others have shut off too soon making me totally nuts so keep this little feature in mind.The only minor quibble I have is that it has an orange display which is my least favorite color but its bright & clear to read so no real argument from me & if it holds up over time I will be a very happy woman, but so far so good! I have used it multiple times daily for a couple months now to maintain my Sourdough starter & make bread and it's perfect for that and it has gotten a workout before I wrote this review. I hope it helps you chose as there are so many scales to choose from its difficult to hit all the right buttons but this scale has done that nicely! Happy baking!

Perfect addition to the "family" for making coffee with AeroPress!

I bought this scale to use with my new AeroPress coffee maker, and I made a great choice. One-button tare makes it so easy to zero the scale for precision brewing. The built-in scale makes it a no-brainer to time my brewing (I had been using an iPhone to time, and it was awkward and way too gesture intensive) accurately. The unit has a nail holes in the back so that I can hang it on a brad at my brewing station to keep it handy, yet out of the way. Very nice product.

I've used this scale just about every single day to weigh out my coffee beans for the last 6 months. The batteries that it came with died just a few weeks ago, so about 5 months of life on a single set of batteries seems pretty good to me. I replaced the batteries with some rechargeable ones and it works fine. Only weird quirk is that when I first replaced the batteries, it showed full power, then the next day it showed one bar. I don't really care about how accurate the battery meter is, though, so long as it works. It may also have something to do with the batteries being rechargeable, not sure.

Sometimes when using it I have to re-tare it, but I've run into this problem with analytical scales. Just a little static electricity can mess with the reading. The reading isn't wildly inaccurate, though, even when it drifts a bit.

Worked well while it worked well

This was an excellent scale. I used it for espresso and pour-over coffee as well as for bread making. While it was working well, its only limitation was the 3 kg limit which I sometimes ran up against when using a heavy glass bowl to make dough for two loaves. It seemed to be really accurate and the lag between added weight and indication on the scale was very usable. Having it weigh to a tenth of a gram was especially nice for making espresso.

The timer is excellent -- I used it every time I made coffee.

The reason I'm writing this review and only giving the scale 3 stars is because I've had it for 90 days and now it is no longer weighing accurately. When I first got the scale I weighed Ball jars, mixing bowls and other items and compared those weights to another scale I have and there were no issues. Now the scale no longer weighs those same items at the same weight.

When I turn it on or tare, the scale's reading continuously fluctuates up and down several grams. I've kept it very clean and dry. It's running on fresh batteries.

So while I love the way it worked in the beginning, I can't give this scale a whole-hearted recommendation.

Perfect little scale for making espresso.

A scale is a must-have tool for any barista, and this scale works very well and is super easy to use. I was able to easily place my empty porta filter on this scale, hit tear to zero it out, then fill the pf with grind and measure until I got the desired amount. The result was a much improved, if not perfect espresso shot, compared to what I had been making up to that point when I was blindly using unmeasured amounts of grind and getting very watery under extracted pulls. I've only used this scale for a day so far, but so far so good.

Versatile: think cooking and measurement beyond coffee

This coffee scale, after some close study, reveals the designers' intentions to create a support device for brewing the "perfect" cup of coffee. This scale provides the means by which you may measure exactly how much ground coffee you are placing in your pot and exactly how much water you are adding to the pot all while it sits on top of the scale as it brews. As you are adding the water to awaken the grounds, you can activate a timer to brew the coffee for exactly as long you wish it. The picture in the manual give the impression of a Chemex coffee pot or at least a drip maker. However, with a slight change, it should work for any coffee brewing method. The timer is more appropriate to a French Press.

The scale and instructions, which need to be read carefully a few times, lead one through this methodoloy, although the measurements are - naturally - left up to us as the fans of this beverage. The scale can switch from grams to ounces to milliliters. For most of us in America and perhaps others of British influence, grams and milliliters were left behind in school chemistry classes. This may present a small challenge although the Imperial ounce of water weighs one ounce in weight. I posted some pictures showing liquid and food results.

A very nice feature of this scale is the ability to weigh / measure liquid or solid in a container. The scale can weigh the container, zero out the container, and then measure the difference showing the net weight. The scale is very sensitive to touch. It is also slightly off from the testing I have done, but close enough to produce the results you are looking for.

Of course for those who are on diets and are looking to closely measure who much food is being prepared by weight and volume, this scale can certainly help you.

Wish item: the timer is a curiosity. It can measure minutes and seconds ascending but there is no alarm to notify you when the desired time is reached.

Walk through: the scale is nicely packaged in a friendly box. It comes with a USB Charger and AAA batteries to get a quick start. You can charge it or run it on batteries as you wish. It is cleanly designed and the display is easy to read. I displayed the display for ounces by water, milliliters by liquid, ounces by weight, and grams for solids. For those looking to measure precise portions will find this scale very useful.

I bought this scale to supplement my Chemex ( Chemex Classic Series, Pour-over Glass Coffeemaker, 6-Cup ) and electric kettle ( Bonavita 1.0L Digital Variable Temperature Gooseneck Kettle ). I didn't think I really need that much precision when making my coffee, but I was not even close to what I thought I was brewing. I didn't have enough grinds, and I was using way too much water. My coffee is now consistent and tasty. The time helps add to that consistency by making sure my bloom and rests are always the same. I would buy it again.

NOT a 0.1g accuracy scale!

Probably the best scale I've ever owned, but with one critical flaw... It absolutely does not measure to the nearest 0.1 grams! I've sat there and removed a single grain of ground coffee at a time to see when it changes, and the best you'll get is 0.5 grams of change at a time.

That being said, it does seem very accurate, just in 0.5g increments, definitely NOT 0.1g!
