4.0 out of 5 starsNot bad for $40, needs updated drivers.
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on October 11, 2021
My onboard audio is an ALC897 codec, needless to say, it is underwhelming (thanks MSI for using this on a B560). I then upgraded to an ASUS SE sound card, it was an immediate improvement and provided a rich sound with a deep bass that is fantastic if you are on a budget. I had the opportunity to purchase a used ASUS AE for $40 and though its a definite improvement, there are a few things to be sure to do for installing drivers. Make sure the onboard audio controller is disabled in BIOS and uninstall audio drivers prior to installing the sound card. Once the sound card is installed, go to the ASUS website and install drivers, then restart the PC. The sound quality is a definite improvement over the ALC897 and the ASUS SE. The software is also very user friendly with a number of presets. I am planning on replacing the opamp and am eager to see if it makes any meaningful difference. I will say that it is disappointing that it only goes to 110db and only drives 150ohm headsets. Also, as of 10/11/21, Windows 11 is not yet supported. For $40 its a good buy. However, anything more and I would go with an external dac setup.

So I was pretty excited to try out this card, as I had read fairly good reviews about it, and hadn't actually experimented with anything other than on-board audio before.

First, if you have a dual or triple fan GPU installed in the upper-most PCI-E slot (what most motherboards use as the X-16 slot a GPU is most often installed in) in a standard ATX case, you're not going to be able to utilize the X-1 slot for this card, as it almost completely blocks cooling fan flow from the GPU. A minor issue, but still kind of annoying.

After using a lower X-16 slot in my motherboard for this card, and installing the proper drivers and Asus software, when using the headphone out, which has a built in Amp and can supposedly drive headphones up to 150 ohms impedance, I heard a faint crackling at lower volume from any bass driven note. As I continued to use the card, I realized this faint crackling can be heard using any of the outputs on the card. Not much in the way of troubleshooting online for this either. After removing the card and reverting to on-board audio, voila. No more crackling.

When I tried to use both the front and rear outputs on the card, the card would only output to the front. No audio would be output through the "center" output either.

And finally, at random times, a complete breakdown of the audio would occur, with whatever was being input by the computer, resulting in audio which sounded like a crashing noise, extremely low bitrate, and a slowing of whatever speech or music was being played, requiring a system reboot.

The software wasn't too great either, with the equalizer, bass boost, and compressor settings providing no noticeable change in audio quality. If you wish to leave headphones plugged into the back of the card on windows 10, you'll need to utilize the program from Asus, as the source is not selectable in the windows task bar.

Unbelievable.

I've never had much luck with Asus products before (big problems with high end Asus laptops), but this one might be the nail in the coffin for me and Asus.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a very easy to install and use Card

I like the ease of install, but there is quite a bit of extraneous noise in the card. It becomes easy to ignore and there is no background noise when it is actually playing sound. The sound quality and the feature sin the software are otherwise fantastic and I highly recommend. Pound per square inch, this card is a good buy.

This sound card made a huge difference over my on-board RealTek sound card. The sound is larger, louder and crisper. Great purchase for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stuck Toe in uncharted waters with this card - Extremely pleased!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on November 12, 2019

I panicked last week when a recent Windows 10 update killed both my main PC internal Realtek sound and the sound card (E-MU 1616M) which back in the day was top of the line for SoundBlaster and could not be revived with a roll back of the driver and I could not safely "un-do" the Windows update. Ok so a few days worth of panic led to my search to replace both cards. I needed something with ASIO drivers because all of the audio programs I use need them. ASIO is basically provides extremely low latency especially for programs that are heavy on the sound quality. This ASUS card fit the bill and after the almost mindless installation worked beautifully with great sound. The literature that I saw is heavily influenced by the Gaming Community and I was worried that it would be too light for my needs. Rest assured so far it has outperformed the E-MU 1616M - which worked perfectly for almost 15 years until the fated update. My computers are all very robust and I built each system to last quite a while and am not afraid to spend some cabbage on "future proofing" my setup. I anxiously await yet another ASUS STX II 7.1 card this week which will be for my "workhorse" Audio computer, where I edit and produce samples. It will replace the very sad internal sound card which has never quite lived up to it's expectations.

According to Asus official FAQ, the Xonar AE is not compatible with Windows 11 as of October 2021. Take note if you plan on upgrading - hopefully they can provide an updated driver soon.

I read a lot of reviewers talking about trouble installing this card. Fortunately, it looks like Asus has resolved the driver issues. I uninstalled my Nvidia sound drivers, then downloaded the Asus drivers from their site. I shut down my machine and popped in the card. I fired it back up, installed the new Asus drivers - one more restart and boom! Amazing audio!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sounding budget card

I built a new computer from the ground up. My old computer had the Creative Labs ZX sound card, but it has died. I decided to go with an alternative.

Installation was a breeze and I like the interface. I decided to use my "Beatles for Sale" CD as my first test. I plugged in my Grado SR80 headphones, tweaked the settings a little and was greeted with great sound. I think it sounds better than my old Creative Labs card.

I don't game, but I do use my computer to do audio restoration of 78s in my collection. I'm looking forward to testing out the input quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Installed and Works Flawless

I was forced to purchase a sound card for my computer due to issues with the original computer's onboard audio and software. I did some research and decided on the Asus Xonar AE Sound Board even though there were no reviews posted as the product was so new. I installed the card and the provided software on my computer which is running MS Windows 10 64 bit OS. The installation went flawlessly. I am very happy with this product as it works perfectly and the easy to understand software user interface offers full control of all functions. I have experienced no problems with using this card. I do a lot of gaming and music and find the 'profiles' provided in the software to be very effective and helpful.
I highly recommend this product!
