Very useful coffee scale.

Been using it for about a year now for pour over and also general kitchen use. The scale works well and is very sensitive and accurate. The interface and workflow for pour over is not that intuitive at first but you get used to it. You can also just use it manually for pour over just like any other scale by using it to weight your coffee dose and your water. I like that the scale is large enough to use it for general cooking as well. Comes in handy when you are weighing the dry ingredients for baking, etc. The battery life is good also. I use it quite often and only needed to charge it twice over the last 12 months. I just make sure to turn it off immediately after each use. The rubber pad on top is easy to clean and the rest of the unit is easy to wipe down. The one thing that annoys me a little is that you can’t switch measurement modes during use unless it’s the first thing you do. For example if I start using it and then realize I need ounces instead of grams I can’t just switch to grams mid-use. I have to start over by shutting it off, switching it on, them switch to ounces, then get started. So just remember to make sure the measurement mode is the one you need before you get started.

Bad Idea, Bad Execution

Let me be transparent about my saltiness regarding this scale. It broke. For no reason. After only a few months.

I've been into specialty coffee for several years, and used a Hario scale until March when mine finally gave up the ghost. Bye-bye resilient, easy to use scale .

Hello finicky, awkward, fragile scale.

A few days ago and for no apparent reason, my Brewista scale stopped working. The "Zero" button, which is absolutely essential to use this scale, became unresponsive. That was the straw that broke the camel's back for this scale.

Even if it lasted for 10 years, this scale has a ridiculous interface that requires you to weigh something, then zero that weight, then add your ground coffee, then hit the ratio button so the scale can do the math that I do myself anyways to determine the amount of water that you need -- so that you can juts time your brew.

Again, YOU CAN NOT ACTIVATE THE TIMER UNLESS YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS. The interface is anything but intuitive.

Understand - the feature that tracks your brew as you go and provides a "target" amount versus the actual amount that you have poured is arbitrary and useless.

Don't buy this scale.

Nice quality but quirky coffee scale with timer

It's really nicely built and precise scale. I had only used cheaper generic scales but the Brewista Ratio Scale feels of more quality, it's water protected, you'll save in batteries as it has a USB rechargable battery, the bottons are soft and responsive, it finds the weight fast, it comes with a protective rubber mat and a hard plastic shell to cover it.

Now about how it performs to actually make coffee. It has to modes, manual and automatic. In manual you can use it as a normal coffee scale, you press zero to tare your bin, pour the coffee, then you put the carafe and brewing method, zero (tare) it, press ratio, then it shows how much water you need. Two points of advice here, you have to set the ratio before you start, it cannot be changed afterwards and you cannot start the timer if the ratio button is not pressed even if you are not going to use the calculation.

To use Auto mode you have to do the sequence described above in a very precise manner and it supposedly saves you the button presses. I haven't been able to complete a brew in auto mode, it's to quirky. The first time, I was setup correctly, started pouring, the timer started automatically as expected l, I lifted the chemex to stir it as I usually do, and the scale assumed I've finished and stoped everything, bummer. The second time I didn't even lift my V60, just wave it a wiggle on top of the carafe and it stopped and reset again! Both times I had to end my brew without knowing my time or my weight. I'm an optimist, so I'll try a third time.

In conclusion, two recommendations:

If you want to use it in manual, don't forget to calculate the ratio as you cannot start the timer if you don't, even if you are not going to use the calculation.

In auto mode, just brew and don't touch anything until the end. Or better yet, don't use Auto mode and save your brew, it's too finicky.

If you haven't discovered the joys of pour-over coffee you should search the web for Scott Rao and then give this machine a try. what it does and try to keep track of your pour-over skills by tracking the grams of water, the timing of the bloom and the weight and ratio of water. Sure you won't need all the features with time but if you give this a effort, you will have a new standard for your coffee that you can use against your other coffee venues to help you see if you are getting the best coffee that you're paying for. My favorite recipe is 1:16 ration (for every one part water, 16 parts coffee and make sure your grounds are not too fine (bitter).

We have a Two coffee shop's and use these scales for our pour over bars. They are highly reliable and easy to use. Simply power it on, add the coffee and follow the bar scale as you pour. The ratio button is great because we can switch between a Hario V60 and a Chemex setup easily. Our new barista's learn the operation in less than 90 seconds and even if you've never used this before, you'll have it down in your first use. The USB charger is brilliant as we never even have to move them around from their stationary location. We would highly recommend these if your looking for a pour over scale!
