Soooo... I've had a cheap $15 blender from Walmart for years. I make super thick, peanut butter and frozen banana, smoothies. I have tried to kill that cheap blender but it just won't die. However, it also requires me to stop, stir and start the blender again and again to mix everything up.
I finally decided to buy the Vitamix blender that costs 15x that of my cheapo blender and to be honest, I was expecting 15x the power and ease of use.
Instead, it only feels about 2x more powerful, and if it wasn't for the tamper, it would be just as frustrating to use.
Basically I'm just meh about it.
I filled it up about 2/3rds with potatoes and milk, like I've done in my food processor, and turned it on. It did well for about 10 seconds and then stopped by itself.
I had overheated the unit!
I had to wait about 2 minutes before it would turn on again with the same results. My whole family was there and was as shocked as I was. I understand it's got thermal protection to prevent the motor from over heating, but that seemed waaaay too fast for it to go into thermal overload protection.
My cheap blender will start smelling burnt after a minute of blending, but it just keeps chugging along. This one smelled burnt after a few seconds and shut off.
Also, the variable speed doesn't do any good past level 7. From level 1-7 you can hear the motor increasing about every 1/2 step of a level, but after 7 it doesn't go any higher. I can turn the dial back and forth between 10-7 and there is no increase or decrease in rpms.
All in all it's been a little disappointing. If all you want to do with it is make liquidy drinks, then you shouldn't have any problem, but most blenders can do that.
If you want to make thicker things then you might want to look elsewhere.
I'm going to return this one and get another in case this is a lemon (it was reconditioned, but looked new out of the box).
Update on the replacement blender:
So this new blender is the same. The dial stops adjusting power around the 7-8 mark on the dial and smells like it's burning. I'm going to make some hummus with it and if it can handle that, then I guess we'll keep it, but just not put anything thicker in it.
Still not super happy with the quality. Doesn't feel like a $200 blender.
(2 month update)
So, I've made hummus with it, lots of smoothies, and I can say it's grown on me. It hasn't had any problem with overheating/shutting off, though it did start to cook my hummus while I was making it. It's still too expensive at $249, but if you can get one for $150 or less, then I'd say it's probably the best you'll find in that price range. Can't speak to longevity, but Vitamix has a good track record. I also enjoy the easy clean container and lid. Everything comes off of it really easily.
