How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we donโ€™t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsWorks perfectly, but just beware that:
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on January 23, 2022
These devices all use the same chipset, so, there's no reason they won't work.

Plug your Nintendo Switch in to this, and plug this in to your TV.

Be aware that:

1. There is no power switch. This is incredibly annoying, meaning you have to pull the power plug in and out.

The vast majority of these units just sit in one place in use forever, and it's incredibly annoying there's no power toggle.

(The power plug is simply a mini USB, which is correct and good.)

2. The device has an absurd "whacky" design, it's just of like a pyramid or something, with weird color touches at the ends and so on.

It should just be a tiny black cube of metal.

3. The display is - insanity. If you want to spend a year reading, and, what - memorizing? - color codes, blinking, or whatever, do that. It's just insane. There should be six or so one-cent LEDs on the front, clearly labelled in large white lettering "no input" "disk full" "recording" "power" "disk" "hdmi" "no disk" etc.

4. If you're used to using normal, everyday stage or studio electronics, of course obviously every single button, switch etc is EXTREMELY CLEARLY LABELLED, in LARGE WHITE ON BLACK LETTERS so that it is easy to use in any environment. I literally don't know and will never know what the buttons ? on this thing are for. I mean, unless at some point in life I say, huh, i will sit down for 2? 3? days and try to investigate the buttons (are there buttons? what are those things?) on that capture card thing"

But, I'm not going to do that. Ever.

5. There's no product manual, not even online. (There's a risible manual for the idiotic "video! editing!" software they give you a link to, which is funny.)

6. Why, why, why, why, why the micro chip slot IS ONE OF THE "SPRING" ONES. Does anyone even MAKE those any more?

Micro cards, you now just "stick in the hole" and they remain "half sticking out" and you just grab them and push them in or out.

Do you remember the incredibly stupid micro card slots where (why?) the card would go ALL THE WAY IN, with a spring. The only way to get them out is use a very firm fingernail, or perhaps a tiny screwdriver, and you sort of press them in to release the catch, and then a spring pushes them out.

It is so incredibly stupid - insanity.

Again, works perfectly, flawless, but beware of the utterly idiotic controls, bizarre design, the very missing power button, and the laughable "spring/latch" card thing, which is a total nuisance.

TL;DR: If you don't get hit by quality control issues, this card's not bad...But the out of the box performance is fairly poor,(Any fast motion on the screen blurs everything), and even minor problems will require HOURS to fix, as if you need help, support is hard to get.
And when you add in my first card being DOA, and the encoding glitches I had with the software, I don't think it was worth the effort.

But if you're the kinda person who just want to plug something in, and hit play, and you're not picky about image quality, this will be usable!
----
I'm not a big streamer, nor am I a pro gamer, but I do enjoy recording gameplay at time.
I recently build (fairly decent) a brand-new PC, with a AMD 3600x, and rtx 2600s gpu, loaded with SSD's and it records PC games great!

So I just wanted something that could record console games as well, I had some issues with Elgato's software in the past, so I decided to give avermedia a chance!

I saw some bad video reviews online, but I heard some of them had been fixed! so I paid $135 and waited for it to arrive!

It showed up the next day!...dead!... Plugged it in, and the pc, no lights, not detected by the software, I tried multiple PC's... NO LUCK! Even the 'record button' on the device was broken

I should have just returned it, and gone for a different model/brand, But I really liked the Idea of PC-free recording, and it supported 480i even the new elgato cards don't! So I ordered a replacement. (Amazon made the return super easy!)

The new one arrived, and worked out of the box, it lit up, and showed up in the software, so I made sure everything was up to date, and started recording!

The first thing I noticed was how soft the image looked, so adjusted the record settings to the highest preset, called 'optimal', The image quality improved, but any time there was motion on the screen, it was filled with blur to the point where it was hard to make out moving objects.

Again, that should have been enough to send the card back, but instead, I reached out to avermedia support, I tried their support page, their support twitter account, and asked on their subreddit, I mainly asked about how to improve the image quality overall.

After almost 5 days of waiting, I finally got a rep's response on how to improve the image quality. word-for-word, it said: "we cannot improve the video quality. If you want to get higher video quality, please choose our device GC553/ GC573/GC551 they belong to software decoding."

Their solution was to just buy a more expensive capture card, and to a point that makes sense, the higher end cards will generally look better, but I'm not looking for top of the line quality, but something actually watchable.

But, turns out the highest preset only allows recording up to around 20mbps(auto adjusted bitrate), that should be more than enough for 1080p60, but it's not the maximum the card/software support, so I decided to try making my own preset.

After all this, I still was dedicated to sticking with the card, the software gave me no information on what a better recording setting would be, so I look up some specs online, and found that 60mbps may give me the best quality from this card, I also set the quality to 'high' and tweaked a few other settings.

And with some work, I was able to get MUCH cleaner recordings! (not sure why avermeida support did not recommend this.) Simply increasing the bitrate cleared up the blur, and made even free-frames look much more presentable!

But, this is where I learned, how avermedia's software is significantly WORSE than elgato's! your codec is locked by your video card, only MP4 recording (h.264/h.265). no hevc high support, Autio bit rated capped at 192kbps, ONLY Constant bitrate options, no auto for manaul profiles? and no slider for video bitrate? (enter it manually, or use arrows)

I get it, you don't want to overwhelm your customers with options, but when your presets are bad, and you don't give enough settings to fix them, then everyone loses!

PC-free mode, caps out at about 1500kbps, (probably a limitation of the hardware) and records to MOV format, I'm not sure what form of hardware encoding is used but it could be better. And if the capture card doesn't like your SD card, there's no way to find out why, it just lights up red, and you gotta reformat or try a new card I guess?

So after spending hours getting everything up and running it seemed to be working, The recording turned out much smoother, but when I brought it into my recording software, I started to notice some visual glitches in my recordings!
I saw a few before, but I figured it was VLC freaking out when scrubbing through high bittrate mp4's..NOPE! Avermedia's software had ruined sections of my recording!

This should have been the last straw, but I again kept trying to get the card to work,
I decided to try using OBS for the recording instead, I used that for all My PC games and never had any problems, and on their website, they listed it as compatible, so I figured it was worth a shot!

The first problem I ran into was that avermediaโ€™s documentation on how to set up the card using their โ€˜stream engineโ€™ was out of date, it was showing features that even their own software no longer supported.

I eventually got it working, and cranked up the bitrate, and I was able to record without the massive encoding glitches, recording directly from the card lead to a few dropped frame (from the capture card, not due to OBS) But using streamengine allowed for smoother recordings.
With either Option in OBS Some Blur is still added to motion, due to the capture cardโ€™s hardware decoder, but itโ€™s still much better than the visual glitches recentral 4 gave me.

Also, if you're looking to record 480i content from an HDMI enabled xbox/gamecube/ps2, you should know this will accept the signal, but it will not pass an interlaced signal to your PC, instead, you'll get 480p,I believe they just combine or duplicate the extra frames, and you can't change the setting,(even with OBS) so the resulting image may look less smooth than on your TV.

So at the end of the day, I canโ€™t even use the software made for the card, and based on the OBS recording, it seems like the main issue with the video quality is the encoding chip on the card.

The card is USABLE, that why Iโ€™m not giving it 1/5 stars, but Iโ€™m seriously considering returning it, as even for the price, the quality could be better, and as avermedia said, the only solution would be a better capture card.
But after all this work, and lackluster support, if I do upgrade this card, I wonโ€™t be buying another from avermedia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had bought it sooner

I had been looking into recording various videos and editing them with the option to stream if I wanted to and this was suggested by a friend. I thought it would be a starting point and I could upgrade as I needed but there is no need to upgrade. The quality of video and sound is fantastic, easy to setup and install and the various options for recording opens many possibilities. Coupled with an SD card and it makes it even easier to save the recordings from any HDMI source.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised

Works as advertised. I use it in standalone mode, recording to the memory card.

You may need to change the resolution display setting in Windows for the desktop to match what can be recorded. You may also have to change the audio output of your computer to the HDMI output instead of the analog output.

Sometimes it stops recording and leaves a corrupt file which cannot be deleted. You have to run check disk to fix the file system on the memory card and delete the corrupt file. You then need to make the video again.

Sometimes the audio gets out of sync with the video and what you record has to be done over.

As stated, when directly connected to an encrypted device, like Roku, you cannot record the video.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kinda frustrating, inconsistent resolution

I bought this as a replacement for my Elgato 4K60 Pro mk2. I needed to switch from a PCIe capture card to a USB card due to space issues (RTX 30 cards just do not leave very much space do they?). I had considered the Live Gamer Portable Plus 2 previously and gave it a shot because of the 4K pass through. Sure it didnโ€™t capture in 4K but Twitch only allows 720p or 1080p streaming so it wasnโ€™t a huge deal for me, as long as I have my 4K 60 hz pass through. The issue that Iโ€™ve run into is that half the time my display detects the input when coming out of the Live Gamer pass through as 1080p and it takes messing with the switch on the front or outright unplugging and replugging in HDMI to get it to detect the 4K properly. Not a huge deal as I donโ€™t stream much anymore and typically bypass the unit in general, but when I do have the urge to stream, itโ€™s an annoyance to get it to work right.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for Starters, but not ideal for Pro Streamers - You get what you pay for

I've only had this capture card for about a week, and my only reason for buying this was to replace a Live Gamer Ultra that recently died on me.

However, there are some important things everyone needs to know:

Pros:
- Sound Quality is spot on, and is well in sync with my game inputs
- Easy to set up, and to plug and play
- Great for beginners.

Cons:

- The picture and video quality on this capture card are NOT ideal for pro streamers like me who are wanting the very best out of streaming
- If you use this, don't use it with OBS, because the video delay is REALLY bad, and there is like about a half-second input delay as well.
- Micro USB powered instead of USB C.

While the price is rather easy on your bank, you are pretty much stuck with very limited options, and really, AverMedia, that is YOUR fault.

If you want to be a pro streamer, get something that supports 4K, even if you "don't" really need it. Trust me, those work WAY better whether or not your graphics card "can handle it".

Device works as manufacturer states. Got a amazon returned item for just over $30 bucks. Definitely worth the money. Product works flawlessly. Overall a very passable twitch 1080p capture/streaming device.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great on macOS
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on August 12, 2019

I'm writing this review primarily because none of the other reviews seem to cover using the device on macOS, which is what I bought it for. This is for the GC553 connected over USB-C with an Apple Thunderbolt cable as the Mac instructions suggest.

I have the device connected to a 2018 Mac Mini, which obviously doesn't meet the system requirements AVerMedia provides but that's fine because I'm not using their software. I took my chances going in knowing this was a standard USB Video device and figured if the Mini can encode 4K30 in realtime via hardware then why would I need discrete graphics? As it turns out, I was right and it works fine. The official software provided for the device can't even capture a stable 1080p30, which is expected since it's just encoding in software. But it can apply firmware updates and change settings. OBS can't do hardware encoding on the Mini either, so that's not very good either. The good news is that any app that can do video capture + hardware encoding on a Mac works perfectly. The easiest option is Quicktime Player, which comes with macOS. Quicktime Player offers two quality settings, High and Maximum. High is 720p, maximum is 1080p. Both capture at a flawless 60fps with no dropped frames. Unfortunately QuickTime Player doesn't let you capture at 4K. I don't know how many capture apps for macOS support both hardware encoding and 4K devices, but I found a 3rd party app called SwiftCapture and purchased that. It can capture 4K30fps directly to H.264 on the Mac Mini flawlessly, no dropped frames. This is exactly what I wanted and it confirms that the official system requirements are just a limitation of the official software and you probably can use the capture device on any mac with USB-C as long as it supports hardware encoding.

Note that I use this specifically for capture to files only. I haven't looked to see if any 3rd party streaming app supports the hardware encoder on the Mac Mini. OBS doesn't as of version 23.2.1. You can still use that anyway but the framerate will be choppy since it's not hardware encoded.

As far as the product goes, I was impressed by the size. It's much smaller than the HD PVR that I used to capture component video previously. And the fact that it is USB powered is also nice. Set up was fairly easy, just connect it following the instructions and use the software on their website to update to the latest version.

The only disadvantage I can see is that it doesn't seem to be capable of capturing 1440p60 unless the source device is outputting that resolution. When you have 4K content, I can capture in 4Kp30 or 1080p60 which is downscaled from 4K, but it doesn't let you capture the 4K downscaled to 1440p60. When you put the device into 1440p mode during 2160p video it just displays a message about resolution not being supported. In the software provided it seems the only way to capture at 1440p is to put the device into 4k30 mode but save your video as 1440p30. I'm not sure if it behaves the same way on Windows but it would be nice to be able to directly capture into 1440p even if the content was 2160p.

Overall it's a great little device if you just want to do video recording from a Mac, especially if you don't use the provided software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zero documentation. Surprisingly solid device.

BLUF: This is an excellent device for the money, and a good Swiss-army knife for a consultant or QA team to have around. It comes with all the cables, too, and they're not bad.

I bought this to record workstation demos for clients; software-only recorders are not reliable under high CPU loads, and this will record independently to a MicroSD card (U3, V30 or better).

I cannot find an English manual for this thing. There is a FAQ, but a proper manual is missing from both the box and the web site. This is important, because there are some "magic button" combos that you will have to figure out by trial and error without it-- including some very frustrating things like "headset mute".

Some information you may find helpful:

YES, it records HD (1920x1080) video at high framerates.

NO, it will not record 4K video.

YES, it will reliably run under power from a normal (500mA) USB-A port. (The manufacturer suggests bringing a USB power bank along if you're using a laptop, which is actually not a bad idea.)

YES, it really will record totally independently of the host system; all it needs is power and an HDMI connection. There is a big glowing button you whack to start and stop it-- that's it.

YES, it will also work as an OBS Studio device (one video capture device that also brings in audio; you don't need a separate audio connection).

YES, it will record HDMI audio. However, the levels are a little low.

YES, the headset jack is 4-position (TRRS) 3.5mm, supporting a microphone. If the mic doesn't seem to work, hold each of the volume buttons down for a few seconds until the mute clears.

YES, you can hear the HDMI audio passthrough in the monitoring headset.

YES, you can hear your own headset mic in the headset. It is, in my opinion, way too loud relative to the HDMI video, so you may want to move the boom out a bit.

YES, there is a mode to use it as a glorified card reader. This was done so that you didn't need to load and unload cards all the time-- I suggest USING IT THAT WAY, and taping over the card slot once the card is installed.

YES, there are some low-latency drivers available; NO, you don't have to use them. The issue is a little complicated; see the website.

When used as a standalone capture device, the native format is ".MOV".

The device is physically quite a bit smaller than I expected, and quite light. Build quality is good.

Grab one. I couldn't find anything else that was even close for twice the price.
