You get a lot of bang for your buck with this book, in my opinion. While at a glance it's Yet Another Get-Smart-Quick Book, it's actually filled with real insights and techniques that are backed with legitimate scientific sources, models and theories. The author does a great job explaining them too, giving you specific real-life examples and overall just using a really easy-to-understand (and easy to read) tone of voice.
I really didn't expect the sheer amount of content in here. Though the title is about critical thinking, it gets really in-depth, talking about all forms of it (problem solving, creativity, and even interpersonal skills) and it mentions not just cognitive techniques but factors like sleep and mindfulness on your cognitive behavior. So all in all, I'd say it exceeded my expectations and is a great deal for the cost.
“Education never ends, Watson. It is a series of lessons, with the greatest for the last.” ― Arthur Conan Doyle, His Last Bow
Hollins' book of how to think correctly is full of educational information a young person should read and delve in. I was lucky enough to be trained by the best (Special Forces) at JFK Psychological Warfare Center in 1968 as my first education after High School, so some of the principles he writes about I knew.
However, as Sherlock might say, we learn something every day. How we use that lesson is crucial. Hollins gives the reader much to mull over in a short space of time. You may want to re-read some ideas and put them to work.
Some are: how to critically think; working concepts of Pablo Picasso, Einstein, Henry Ford, and Holms, of course; Observations and Deductive Reasoning; Thinking Outside the Box; and much more.
Peter Hollins writing is clear and concise. You will read, stop and think about how you can use the principle in your world. It is not a technical read but one you will enjoy learning as you read.
I'll keep Think Like Sherlock in my Kindle as I have Conan Doyle's Holms shorts and novels; as you should too.
I have not finished reading this book (I have read bits and pieces so far). However, from what I have read so far, I have found that this book is very insightful, easy to follow, and has made me shift my perspective about deductive reasoning and how to become more direct observations in my day-to-day life. This book is interesting to read if you are fascinated by Sherlock Holmes' abilities and want to gain more insight into his mind. I look forward to finishing this book!
Definitely recommend this book! If anything, this will help you approach and analyze problems from multiple directions and I think that is a very useful skill to have.
I searched for a while for books on critical thinking and stumbled upon this one ( although its not the book's main subject). What i got was far more than i expected. A great book packed with ton of useful advice on how to think critically, observe, deduce and much more. Great value for my money. Read it quickly.
This book helped provide me with a ton of insight about thinking on your feet. My critical thinking skills have definitely been improved after this read, and I think the overall message was extremely helpful!
The book did not disappoint! Thoughtful, pragmatic and well-written paragraphs that definitely give you something to reflect on/ dig deeper into. I'm going to be using these tips to solve every day problems and recommend that you get this book if you're even considering it!
