How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsBetter than the i7 for gaming
Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2021
I bought this for my son's computer. He likes shooting games and I wanted him to experience building his own system. My Ph.D. is in AI and I used to teach college. The i5 is simply more stable and less likely to glitch than the faster i7. In many ways, the i5 is faster because the operating system does not have to manage so many cores for what little they contribute while gaming. In gaming, it's the video card that is of primary importance. Having a stable CPU to manage the card makes more sense than having twice as many cores to impress your friends.

3.0 out of 5 starsExpensive Downgrade: NOT for Video Editing in Premiere Pro
Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2020
I cannot speak for gaming with the KF, but I can say that I am very disappointed with it for Adobe Premiere Pro. I have been using the i5-9600K for a while, and I was ready to upgrade. I knew that the i7-9700KF does not have integrated graphics, but I did not realize how much of an impact that would have on premiere pro, because I use a GTX 970 video card. After running a series of tests, my result is a 25% DROP in performance from the 9600K. It appears that Premiere Pro is now able to use BOTH the integrated GPU on the 9600K and the GTX 970. I rendered a video with my 9600K in 7:48. After "upgrading" to the 9700KF, the same video now takes 9:46!!!! If i were a gamer, perhaps this wouldn't be an issue. However, I will be sending this 9700KF back immediately, and will be purchasing either the 9700K or 9900K instead. Again, DO NOT buy a KF version of these chips if you are using Premiere Pro or other editing software which can use multiple GPUs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmatched single threaded performance
Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2019
Style: 9700K + Discrete Graphics RequiredVerified Purchase
While I find AMD's Ryzen 3 series to be impressive and worthy of consideration, ultimately single threaded performance is too important. I run a performance monitoring app 24/7, so that I can truly know where my bottlenecks are. 95% of the time that my system is waiting on the CPU it has idle cores, but one or more of the busy cores is maxed -- a single-thread bottleneck. This happens over a diverse range of applications, from my IDE, to web browser, to video games.

AMD has a few products for this price that can thrash this in fully multi-threaded workloads. Yet, precious few workloads are threaded enough to benefit. If you are doing heavily threaded workloads, like compression or renders, look elsewhere. If you are a typical power user though, you will probably find better daily performance from a CPU like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars good price / performance ratio for system builders
Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2020

Solid choice with very good single-core performance.
It's a minimalist product aimed at system builders-- there's literally nothing in the box other than the chip.

What you should know, what's to like:
* No onboard graphics. That means no display whatsoever without a discrete GPU. But this is good if you were doing a separate GPU anyway (and keeps the chip cheap).
* No fan/heatsink included. If you're building an enthusiast system, that encourages you to pick something other than the so-so, noisy devices that were shipped with older Intel processors.
* 6-core is substantial enough, since most desktop use isn't highly threaded (other than on the GPU).
* 4.6 GHZ turboboost can't apply to all cores, but when just one core is pegged, it can go notably faster than the 3.7 GHZ base clock.
* K series chips can be overclocked ("unlocked") with the appropriate mobo

What's to not like:
* Not much architectural change from 8th gen products (or 7th gen). It's the same 14nm process as 6th gen.
* Intel keeps changing the processor sockets, so we have to keep buying new motherboards.
* Runs fairly hot / high TDP by modern standards.

Although this 9th-gen Intel CPU is not remarkably different from the 3 generations preceding it, and most of the buzz today is over the top-end processors and the competition with AMD and ARM... there's still many times you just want a basic, well-priced x86-64 processor, not the expensive headline grabbers.

This one hits the price-performance point for your typical hobbyist or gamer. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great power for the price
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2019

A previous reviewer lamented the price of this CPU when it was higher than the standard i5-9600K, since that one includes the GPU.

When I bought this CPU, it was a good $20 lower than its counterpart, and that made it a good bargain. Unless you need i7-level performance (and I didn't), then this processor has plenty of power for gaming (as my daughter's Overwatch play can attest).

If you are gaming, then you're probably installing a dedicated graphics card anyway, and as long as the price of this CPU stays lower than the GPU-enabled counterpart, then I wholeheartedly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet spot at this price

This replaced my i7 4790K run at 4.6 GHz. This cpu with 6 cores (6 threads, no HT)... runs at 4.8 GHz (all turbo) at less than 70C and none of my software can peg the meter at 100% for long except video encoding. I'm currently playing COD:MW and that game will tax the CPU hard in spots where they have a cut scene, but all in all it's a nice processor especially for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent processor, even if its and old generation!

Even though socket 1151 has been dead for a few years, its still a solid platform with nice cpus that you can still find at retail stores and websites. This 9600KF is a nice upgrade from someone that is currently using a I3 9100 or even an I5 9400. I just upgraded to this cpu from a 9400 and although is not noticeable in Windows, you can definitely notice a difference while gaming if your graphics card was bottlenecked by the processor.

As of July of 2022 you can buy this Cpu $15 cheaper if you make the order thru the amazon Mobile app and is your first order using that app.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intel makes good CPUs
Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2020

This is a good midrange CPU. 6 cores, nice clock speed, and it should last a long time. This particular model has no onboard graphics, the one that does include it costs about $10 more, so take that into consideration. I went with a water cooler, to keep it from throttling, so far temps always stay low.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good CPU at the time.

At the time this was actually a bit cheaper than an AMD build including MOBO and was actually faster on single for single threaded. I built another machine with an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 because it was at the price point for that purpose.

bought it for gaming an for my 9600kf i5 an it worked right out of the box when you receive it don't be alarmed when the board actually says 8th gen processor it works for both an the box actually reaffirms that saying 9th gen ready , literally had no trouble once I got everything booted it started it like a charm, this is a great deal don't spend more if you don't have to or want to its all here especially for us mid range gamers, id say its pretty future proof unless you like to go above an beyond

Just finished building my pc. This was a great middle of the road cpu. Would recommend to anyone looking to build something for everyday normal use. Intel doesn’t miss.
