Works Great for Pour Over Coffee - 4.5/5 Stars

I did a bit of research to find a great kitchen scale for use with pour over coffee and chose the new Oxo scale for the reasons below. The other scales I considered didn't have the precision (most only show 1 g increments), were too expensive for similar features as the Oxo, or had issues with breaking after a short time, poor construction, etc.

Here's why I like the Oxo so far (a couple of weeks of use):

Pros:
Built-in timer
0.1 g precision
Removable rubber pad
Quick to turn on (3 seconds)
Effective touch-sensitive buttons
Sleek styling

Cons:
Somewhat unstable (Pressing the touch sensitive buttons w/ any force tends to slightly tilt the scale and will temporarily mess up the measurement. This isn't really an issue if you very lightly press the buttons, and the measurement corrects very quickly, so it is more of an annoyance than a deal breaker.)

Overall the new Oxo scale has worked great for pour over coffee, which is my main reason for getting a kitchen scale. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars, removing 0.5 stars for the slight instability.

Inaccurate scale

I purchased this scale for the sole purpose of brewing coffee in a six cup Chemex. My ratio is 50g coffee to 700g water. This works fine if you want to pay $50 for a normal scale to measure a single static thing (tested this with calibration weights).
However, it is not good for brewing coffee, which is the primary function of this scale. I experienced two things that make this scale bad. First, the tare feature is not consistent. Place your vessel on the scale. Hit tare. Add coffee grounds. It will read 50g. Remove vessel to shake the grounds for an even consistency. The scale now reads a different weight. The difference is not much, but why pay so much for an imprecise scale (when precision is in the name)?
Second, the scale does not work as described. The weight does not increase by .1 intervals, so I could never be sure that the displayed weight was accurate. Again, it is probably a difference between half a gram, but if you're the sort of person who is going to spend this much on a kitchen scale for your coffee, you are probably a detail-oriented freak like me.

Also, the touch screen works, but it is inconvenient and unresponsive most of the time.

Not accurate to 0.1g and touch buttons cause errors

I purchased this scale having become a fan of OXO's other kitchen gizmos. As a home baker and craft-coffee maker I decided to upgrade my old malfunctioning scale. I have two major complaints on this scale. First, it is not accurate to 0.1g as advertised. For example, if the scale says 30.0 g, and I add a coffee bean, the reading doesn't change. A second bean--no change. A third bean--no change. A fourth bean, and the reading jumps to 30.4 g. The second complaint concerns the touch buttons. IWhen I do french press, I often pour my water directly from the pot instead of slowly from a gooseneck. If you dribble a little water over the side of the carafe, there's a good chance it also dribbles over the power button, which re-zeros the scale while you're midpour. Talk about frustrating.

Looks great, but in accurate

Unfortunately, this OXO scale is not accurate enough for pour over coffee. In fact, the scale will not zero properly. If I zero a bowl, lift it off then place it back down on the scale it will read +1 grams. If you are fine with 1.0 gram accuracy then you should be fine with this scale, but It can not deliver accuracy within 0.1 grams.

On the plus side, it is a very good looking scale. The touch buttons are easy to use and the timer is very convenient. The inclusion of several measurements is useful for baking/cooking.

However it's a swing and a miss here. This would have made for a very convenient and good looking scale for pour over coffee.

Absolutely Not a Precision Instrument

I have the OXO 11 lb scale which seems to work pretty well. It does not offer grams in tenths as the 6 lb version claims to do. Clean nice enough looking the 6 lb scale seems totally incapable of providing anything close to accurate weights. I would purposely make small additions of coffee grounds to grounds already in the tare container with no change in weight. After adding and adding the weight would shoot up 5 or 6 tenths. Remove the holding container and set it back down to get yet another weight that might be higher or lower. Oxo was well rated by someone but I will be looking for another scale producer.

Bought this specifically for pour over coffee. The first few uses I was fairly pleased: the scale was easy to use and didn't appear to have too much lag. Then I started to notice annoying little inaccuracies and inconsistencies that drive me a little crazy:

While it claims to have 0.1 gram accuracy, it rarely actually increases by 0.1 grams. For example, if I want to weigh out 22.0 grams of coffee beans, often I will pour in until it gets to around 21 grams then start adding a couple beans at a time. Too often this scale will not budge as I add those beans until it jumps nearly a whole gram. I have found that if I lift the dosing cup then put it back down it "settles", but that shouldn't be needed.

As mentioned in other reviews, the tare is often off. I have sometimes tired it then turned around to grab something only to see the scale reading -2.1 grams or some such.

I've noticed that while the display moves very quickly, there is actually quite a bit of lag, and sometimes in unexpected ways. This morning I was looking to pour 360 ml of water and overshot slightly to 361.1. Not the end of the world, but by the time the draw down was finished the scale read 359.8.

There are lots of people out there for whom I am sure this is a great scale, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and give it 3 stars. That said, if you want to feel confident in the precision of your pour over, you should probably look elsewhere.

It doesn't shut off mid pour, unless you want it to...

I had another scale that would auto shut off while im mid-pour and that was terribly frustrating when trying to dial in my coffee routine. This scale is high quality and the auto-shut off feature is controllable which works great. Haven't had a mishap and I use this every morning. The build quality is very nice and the touch screen buttons require very little effort to click. Overall very happy with this scale and might buy another one for my office setup.

A little too inconsistent and slow. Buy the Fuzion digital kitchen scale instead if suitable.

Summary: If you are only weighing beans (and less than 500g), like me, buy the much cheaper, much more accurate/precise, Fuzion digital kitchen scale. This OXO is kind of a dud. I have tried the Fuzion now for a few months and I am quite happy with it at around $13.

Original review of the OXO:
I use it only to weigh beans. If I put the bean bin on to tare it the weight can be in a range of 0.5 off. And that can change over time. Eg if I take it off and put it back on again it will weigh the same for maybe 4 times and then if I keep doing it the weight might change to .4 gor so difference and that will stay the same, and if I keep doing it it will keep changing after a few weights. And if I add a few beans the displayed weight will definately not change unless I take the cup off and put it back on the scale several times.

So when I put coffee beans in I don't know if the weight of the container is changing over the time I am weighing the coffee.

When this started happening more I just decided to get a new scale. My new one is like $13 for around 0.01g accuracy. Ill see how it works and maybe update this review.

In short, don't buy this scale. It is a little inconsistent enough that it will make you annoyed. I imagine if you were using it to weight your pourover, even more so. Particulary at around $45.

Don't expect accuracy.

I normally love OXO kitchen goods. I have many of their items in my kitchen. I purchased this at the same time as their variable temperature kettle, which is amazing by the way. This scale? Not so much.

First, if you're kind of into getting approximate weights, this is okay. But if you're buying a scale to get in a ballpark, then eyeing it is probably just as good. But im trying for the perfect cup every day. To the extent that I've even created a spreadsheet to track my brews. I want to track everything as accurately as possible.

The problem with this scale is that once you get to the very fine measurements, it fails. If you wanted 17 grams exactly, it is tough to get. I can be at 16.8 and slow down adding beans to get precise. But the scale won't register any change when I add a few beans at a time. Knowing there is a change, I take the container off and put it back on. Still nothing. Take it off again and put something else on the scale, then take that off and put the beans back on. Now it says 17.4! It goes both ways if I need to remove beans as well. Obviously I question my water weights as well. Very irritating experience!

The design is great. The silicone cover is a good addition. It looks good on my counter. But that's not why I bought it. Very disappointing and now I'm searching for another option. Like I said, the OXO variable temp kettle is the best I have ever tried. But I won't be purchasing an OXO scale again.

Limited use so far, but what I see so far, I like

I bought this to bake bread and pizza dough. I wanted to weigh salt and yeast as well as the bread and water and my previous scale would not even weigh the little paper cups I use to stage my materials, much less weigh 5g of yeast. The first thing I did was weigh one of my paper cups, putting in on the scale several times. 1.7g every time. When I made my pizza dough with it it seemed to have no problem registering the weight of a 1/4 tsp of yeast as I spooned it into the cup, it took several tiny spoons to get up to 5 grams. My next test will be to weigh out 500 grams of flour and then tare the scale and see if it will register the 5g of yeast and 15g of salt as I add it in a bit at a time. (If it doesn't work I will revise the review). So far, I am very pleased with it and hope it continues to perform up to expectations.
