Upgrade from a GTX 970
February 26, 2019
Update 3/15/19: just wanted to give a brief update. The GPU is awesome. I can do everything I want without worrying about anything. What more do you need from a GPU? I haven’t had any issues in the month or so I’ve had it.
I can’t comment on 1440 gameplay but other reviewers have said it plays fine but you might have to make adjustments. I game in 1080p just fine.
I think the non-TI version was just released (or will be soon). I haven’t tested it but from what I’ve seen on YT, the benchmarks are comparable to the TI version on some games so if you want to save some more money, the GTX 1660 might be worth looking into.
The consensus is basically:
if you already have a 10 series card, the 1660 ti/non ti might not be worth the upgrade.
If you have a 9 series or older, it’s worth the upgrade (either version).
If you want ray tracing or whatever, then get the RTX models.
I’ve been wanting to upgrade my GPU for awhile and didn’t think I needed NVidia’s fancy new tech (ray tracing), so I was happy to learn that this middle tier GPU was being released.
I don’t play a lot of games, mostly WoW & the occasional FPS shooter on sale. This is definitely overkill for WoW but I feel like it’ll last me a few generations given my gaming preferences. I kept a GTX 970 for 4 years after all!
Anyway. The setup was easy—plug & play. I did have to use the CD for the drivers because I got the GPU on release day & I couldn’t find the drivers on the ASUS site. Luckily I had a external optical drive laying around. I later learned Asus has a program that GEForce Experience that handles the drivers. No big deal.
It fit into my (Meshify C) case easily. Note: I paid extra for the Asus version because the *****Evga one takes up 3 PCI slots!******
I didn’t have any fit problems—I don’t watercool, so if you need dimensions or whatever, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
The dual fan Asus is compact. I wanted to get the Rog version since it was only a few dollars more but Amazon didn’t have it in stock at the time I made this purchase.
I don’t overclock but based on some reviews I’ve watched you can do so easily. YMMV.
I played WoW (1080p) on ultra settings without much trouble (yes I know it’s a CPU intensive game). I also played Deus Ex Mankind in whatever the default settings were and it seemed perfect.
So, yeah, I’m happy with this GPU. Oh! It’s also very quiet unlike my 979 which I think was dying because it made all sorts of noises. I don’t run a thermal temp monitor—I don’t OC anything & my pc is air cooled—but this GPU doesn’t seem to run hot. I could check, I guess, but I’m not really pushing this thing to it’s limits so I feel like that’d be unnecessary. YMMV depending on your setup.
If you’re in the market for a mid-tier GPU in 2019 & don’t need ray tracing, this is a great option. I think you might be able to find different versions of this card but they’re all in the same general ballpark in terms of price at the date of purchase.
