5.0 out of 5 starsNot as easy as plug it in and bask in its full glory but very satisfying anyway.
Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2019
I didn't rate this for gaming because I don't have a video card to drive a 4K monitor at a good speed yet, but for everything else, it looks brilliant for the money.

I'm a working stiff these days, so I don't have the free time I'd like to have to play around and get everything set up just so, and I found that there are little hurdles and speed bumps along the way with these newer displays if you want to actually USE all of the fancy marketing buzzwords like HDR or Freesync or G-Sync or high frame rates or FALD (full array local dimming). I haven't gotten those all figured out just yet and the documentation and user interface aren't quite intuitive if you've never had to set those up and get them actually enabled and working correctly in real life before. They're not just "plug it in and bask in the full glory" easy yet-- you have to make sure you have the right combinations of hardware, cables, drivers, and settings between all the devices and peripherals to take full advantage of those newer features. But 4K crystal clear beautiful brilliance does pretty much work right out of the box, and at this price, even just that is worth having. It takes very little adjusting to get very realistic colors compared to my old calibrated Dell setup. I didn't even have to delve into the color calibration tool in Windows to get it fairly close to what I prefer in my lighting environment and get my pictures to look almost exactly like they looked in real life when I originally took the pictures. I don't even feel bad quite yet about not pulling out a hardware calibration tool.

So while I haven't put together all of those pieces in a way that lets me enjoy all the features and functionality of this monitor yet, I am already satisfied with my purchase even if I never take the time to make it all work at peak performance. This is a pretty darn good buy.

I've even considered picking up another one or two to replace my old 1080P monitor and at least one of my work monitors at the office because of the price to performance ratio. The only reason I haven't is because I may get my work to buy one or two for me for that, and at home I'm planning to buy one of the top of the line 4K G-Sync quantum dot monitors as my main/gaming monitor once I've upgraded my rig to push 4K really well, and it seems silly to me to buy a perfectly good monitor to only use for a few months. These are too good to waste and I don't have room on my desk for a triple monitor setup, unfortunately, or it'd be a no-brainer.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat monitor, but came damaged
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2023
Good color and brightness. Love the 4k resolution. High quality build. Performs well enough for my photo/video editing and media creation needs. VESA mountable. I like it so far. However, there is some damage behind the screen. It's like a scratch or something inside. The surface is smooth when I rub my finger over it. I tried using all sorts of cleaners, but the damage is really within the screen/glass or whatever. It's right in the center of the screen too. Very annoying. I noticed it from Day 1 but I really needed the extra monitor and I thought initially that I could clean it off or fix it somehow. That unfortunately is not the case...

I have a few days left to return it and I'm debating whether I should, but the lost productivity as well as the hassle of returning it might not be worth all the effort - not to mention having to find a replacement. I really wish this had come without this defect/damage, otherwise I would have given this monitor 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor, but would benefit from alternative mountin options.

Display quality is great and setup was easy. Plenty of options in the menu to fine tune and I love that it has two HDMI inputs. My only real gripe is that with the supplied stand, the monitor does lean forward a bit. If you have it elevated that may not be a huge issue, but if it is sitting on a desk, the tilt can be a bit of an problem for ergonomics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value

It’s nice to get UHD affordably. The 500 model differs from the 550 only in that the stand is more limited. No problem if you use VESA plus you save a few bucks.
I’m a music-centric content creator who is getting back into gaming. My RTX 2060 locks in with freesync at 60fps. Obviously that’s all you get with this monitor. Turn it off for higher FPS but more blur.
Immediately impressed with the sharpness at about 21” viewing distance where 27” UHD is effectively retina.
Expect finessing with Windows 10. I scaled to 200% and downloaded the driver from LG’s site and everything seems as good as my old Dell U2415 except sharper, brighter and better contrast ratio. Haven’t done a full calibration because I don’t have the hardware yet. EDIT: Got the XRite iDisplay Pro Plus and it’s worth it. Monitor looks great. Also I’m not using HDR because it wasn’t immediately clear how to best use it. If you enable HDR in Windows, the monitor recognizes it but it doesn’t seem like the best default mode. Like I said, best result is with the LG icc included with the driver.
Obviously this isn’t a 144Hz reference color grading monster. However, I will tell you that my eyes no longer get all blurry and tired after a long day of moving GUI sliders. I find the colors perfectly acceptable.
I put 5 stars because it deserves more than 4. Like I said, scale your expectations when comparing it to a $1500 display.
One reviewer in particular put me off from this monitor initially. He was comparing it to the previous years 27UK. Ignore that. If you desire crisp resolution and think 24” is too small, do yourself a solid and buy this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice looking, and IPS display for color fidelity
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2022

Chose this monitor for both its slim looks and for the fact that it has an IPS display at 4K. The color fidelity and decent brightness fit well with the purpose for which this monitor will be most used: general computing and, especially photo editing.

Display controls are easy to use, although I have to admit that I am not a real fan of the single-button, joystick-like approach to built-in functions. Especially with the button mounted under the bottom front edge of the screen, at center, where it's hard to even notice that it's there. I expect it'll be second nature after a while.

Photo editing is easier due to the size of the monitor, its resolution, and the 98% of sRGB gamut of the IPS display. Definitely an improvement over many of the older, and even some of the current, display technologies.

As for gaming, this is NOT the sort of monitor that serious gamers are likely to want. Although the specs aren't terrible, the fact that the refresh rate is limited to only 60Hz means they're unlikely to be satisfied with its performance which resulted in lower rating for that purpose.

That said, you CAN game on it perfectly well, and save quite a bit of money compared to "gaming monitors" of this size, as long as you're willing to live with the trade-off regarding refresh rates. Casual gamers are likely to appreciate the 4K resolution over 1080p HD, multiple built-in settings aimed at gaming, and support for FreeSync.

Overall, I found the monitor to be easy to setup and use. It includes two HDMI ports, 1 Display Port and a headphone out jack. The white/silver color scheme is a nice change from the typical black, and coordinates nicely with those who might be building a new PC in a white color scheme.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed!

I had tried a few monitors for my M1 Mac Mini, and each has had its own issues, like flickering (AOC), washed out picture (Samsung), and lower resolution (Viotek Ultrawide), and I settled on this monitor.

The picture and vividness blow me away. Plays nice with an M1 Mac and looks great at 1440P scaling. I highly recommend it to any M1 user who doesn't want to break the bank on a 4k screen.

The only knock I can give it is when trying to use HDR, the screen looks terrible and washed out. I have tried different cables, but ultimately it's either the monitor/MacOS/combination of both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good image for the price. No picture, gaming or video issues seen since setting up 5 days ago.

(Updated) For many years, I used a mismatched dual monitor set up that consisted of a 21” Acer and 22” Samsung models from around 2015. Even though this was adequate for a lot of basic things, it always drove me a little nuts they were of different sizes. Also the color calibrating on both models was a pain that never quite worked and the same videos/images were noticeably different hues depending on which monitor they were displayed on. Basically, it was time to get a dual monitor replacement set of the same brand and model.
I also wanted something that was 4k capable, in the 25" to 29" size range, and of course something that would not break my budget. After spending a few months reading reviews of various models, I found that the LG 27UL500-W 27-Inch best matched my wants and needs. On Prime Day, Amazon discounted the price further, so I placed an order for a set ($279 ea).

Setup: Very easy. To conserve desk space, I purchased a WALI Dual LCD Monitor Fully Adjustable Desk Mount Stand that had two arms. I had no issues attaching the monitors to the desk mount and running cables from the monitor to PC/outlets.

Fit and Finish: I have not seen any bezel issues where they were pealing apart. They are not the thinnest and are about .25” around the top/sides. The bottom is wider. Since I use a desk mount stand, I have no comment about the stands that came with the monitors (they are still bagged). I like that LG put a toggle for the screen controls instead of a row of buttons.

Picture: The picture quality so far is very good. I have not seen the light bleed a lot of commentators have noted.
Ports: The LG 27UL500-W 27-inch has 1 display port (v1.2) and 2 HDMI ports (v2.0). No DVI or RGB15 ports. I assumed I that I could use DVI  HDMI/DP or RGB  HDMI/DP adapters. Neither RGB (which I expected) nor DVI adapters (which I did NOT expect) work with these monitors. So those that have older PCs/Laptops/KVM switches may be out of luck if the equipment does not support a DisplayPort or HDMI video connector (on my initial review, I deducted a star for this).

So, my 4-port RGB KVM switch will not work (this was expected, and I am had my eye on a replacement 4-port HDMI KVM switch that supports dual monitor). For the PCs, it’s a matter of finding cheap replacement video cards that are PCIe x16 with 2x DisplayPort or 2x HDMI ports (but cheap ones do not seem common) and enough VRAM to drive this monitor (from what I read 1 GB should be more than adequate for 1080p since I do not plan to use these PCs for high end gaming). I did find that a passive HDMI to DisplayPort works so integrating a new HDMI KVM switch should not be an issue.

Overall, I have been pleased with my LG 27UL500-W 27-Inch purchases. I also have a plan to work out my KVM/Cable/Monitors. If all goes well, I will likely raise my rating from 4 to 5 stars.

Update 05/05/2020:
I am raising my rating by a star - No image, video or audio channel issues have occurred with either monitor since I purchased them July 2019.

These monitors are in near daily use, are powered on/off often and subject to resolution changes a few times a month. The audio channel is constantly used through one of the monitors for steaming video from a ROKU that is connected to one of the monitors.

I fully integrated these two monitors to use with a 4 dual port HDMI KVM switch. My only disappointment was that an old ROKU SE did not work with the monitors via the HDMI port. This was most likely due to the ROKU SE inability to support 4K. Using a ChromeCast and a ROKU streaming stick had no issues with either LG monitors).

I purchased this as a second monitor for my 27 inch 5K iMac (2020). As far as sharpness it is excellent. However, even with the brightness turned to 100% it still is not as bright as my iMac at 50%. Also, it has a slight green tint when compared to my iMac. I debated about returning it but decided since it was a second monitor I would just keep it. If you have a bright office the I recommend looking for another model that is brighter.
