4.0 out of 5 starsIllusion or fact
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 2, 2022
I’m a author, graphic artist, photo editor and generally a person who uses a desktop computer keyboard a lot, much more than average. I am not a gamer, however I have bought several gamer keyboards in the past thinking the mechanical keys may give me a better feel and longer longevity so I can say this model is not a true gamer keyboard.

THE INEVITABLE COMPARISON

As a power user of keyboards I literally wear them out. I have owned so many brands and models I’ve lost count. Most range from bad to terrible. I am not particularly fond of Logitech as a company, I don’t believe they have a very good reputation for customer service and I think most people who have owned their products will agree that their products don’t last as long as they should. But yet, for a good solid product that feels good to human hands they are probably the only game in town these days. So I keep buying their mice and keyboards, over and over again.

Their K740 has often been called the gold standard, it is nearly perfect, or at least was. For a while it was being sold as a redesigned model with chicklet keys. I don’t think that went over so well and it seems to have been discontinued. After my fourth K740 started giving me troubles, and the availability of used ones drying up, I decided to try this one. From the photos it looks almost identical, and it seems to have real full-dimensional key - not chiclets. In fact, at least in the photos, the keys seemed to have more of the shape of the legendary IBM Selectric than the flatter-topped keys of the K740.

ILLUSION OR FACT - THE COMPARISON

Here is my direct comparison between the original design of one of the best keyboards ever made and this one which I bought at about forty-five bucks. The first impression is that it is solid, heavy and seems to be very substantial for the price. The USB cord is massive, I think just for effect, but I don’t think it translates well into usability. My cord needs to snake around several things on my desk, impossible with this very stiff cord, so that changes how I like to have my keyboard and desktop arranged. But I can live with that. How it looks is fine but the real proof is when I sit down and start to type. I want my keyboard to melt away when I use it, in other words I don’t want to think about it, I just want it to be a tool that translates the movement of my fingers into words on the screen. In comparison this model does indeed have a nice feel, the keys seem to be where they should be and the key travel is just about right to give the user a positive tactile feedback. But on the downside, whereas the K740 is nearly silent in operation this model has a noticeable key click sound that doesn’t seem to be consistent from one key to another. It’s a subtle difference but a fast touch typist might think the key feedback is slightly less than optimal. That is fully a user preference though, either you’re going to like or not. I am getting used to it but I do prefer the silent keystroke of the older model.

One immediate thing you will notice is the lighting. The older model has pure white laser etched lighting that is soft, subtle and very useful for typing in low light conditions. It’s about as good as it gets. The Prodigy on the other hand is meant to dazzle with multi-color zones, something gamers like. The lighting is slightly dimmer. On the plus side is that the colors are programmable and there is almost no light leak between the keys. There is one dedicated button to turn the illumination on and off.

THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW

I’ll run through a few first impressions: one is that the palm rest is hard plastic as is the rest of the body of the unit, it is not padded or non-slip like the K740. This model has four bright white status lights for caps lock, num lock, etc. They are within your line of vision and you will either like that or not. I am so used to the K760’s on-screen display I think I prefer it to status lights. The labels next to the lights are extremely tiny and the same color as the rest of the plastic - in other words you have to memorize the position of each to be useful. The media keys are very well thought out, they are all in the far corner on the upper right and each key has a dedicated function. I rarely use media keys but I think I will start using them now, I like this design very much.

NOT FACT

Here are a few things that separate reality from hype. One is that the product you get is not what they picture in their ad. That’s inexcusable, they’ve shipped enough of this model that they could have corrected their misrepresentation by now. The biggest difference are in the size and shape of the enter and backspace keys - which to someone who uses a keyboard many hours a day can be a very big deal. The other this, again inexcusable, is that you can’t use the standard Logitech SetPoint keyboard app, you need to download a different one for this model.

YES OR NO

How a keyboard feels is the most important thing it does and you can read a thousand reviews and every one of them will be an opinion - no one can decide for you if it will feel good to you, the only way you will know is to buy it, try it, and keep it if you like it, otherwise send it back. My rating is conditional - it is positive considering you can’t get a real K740 anymore - the replacement is nowhere near in the same league as the original, and it still costs way too much. You also no longer have a ready source of reconditioned ones. So you’re stuck with this model if you want something good. My bottom line is that it’s quite good and I’ll probably get used it its little quirks, I would like it better if it was less noisy. And I can’t five points to any product that shows one thing and sells you something else.

3.0 out of 5 starsgreat kybd with some flaws = ***
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 11, 2021
the g213 is by far the best kybd i've ever used and i've been in the 'puter industry since the 70's! most of the reviews attest to the brilliance of its design and feel. i get it. ooh, let me add, a gamer i'm not, k, but the razor cynosa and a red dragon boards i had over the previous 10 months, can't begin to compare. in fact, the cynosa already started to show some wear on the shift and ctrl keys - poor. also, razor software support is horrific! so back to the g213's issues and i'm now on my third in less than 6 weeks.

problem 1) it will not illuminate during bios boot just prior to the win10 login screen. yes, i've tried the light button but when you press that during a boot, it only leads to -
problem 2) after a light button press during a boot, the kybd remains dark forever. yes, FOREVER! doesn't matter if lightsync/g-hub software is running or not, reboot or not. in fact, lightsync is not a real-time app. it simply shows your last configuration. the fix is to unplug and re-plug, then all's well again.
problem 3) the latest release (09 '21) of lightsync/g-hub has a confusing if not outright difficult user interface. worse, they have not updated their online user guide, so u've gotta tough it out on your own. this is especially true if you use "freestyle" which supports zone lighting.
problem 4) when viewing the kybd at an angle, there are lighting hotspots that are noticeable through the keys. yes, this is a nit but becomes somewhat annoying after hours of use.
. . . and that is why it only gets 3 stars.

now the brilliance part - oh what a kybd! the keys feel great and u have color ONLY where it's needed.
1) the colors are great. u have 17m of them but don't expect a lot of color accuracy. the lighting can be adjusted with the app. what i like most is that the colors do not bleed through under the keys. the keys illuminate including shift characters and nothing else. what a joy! this should be standard for all kybds - what gives?!!
2) the kybd is divided into 5 lighted zones. these zones are chosen arbitrarily but are ok for my use. the numeric section on the right along with the media keys above it, are a zone; the print key section including the arrow/cursor keys below are yet another zone, and the remaining fn and type keys are divided into the remaining 3 zones. very nice.
3) there's a default setting when initially plugged in but if the light key is pressed and held while pressing a numeric key (0-9), other options appear. why this info is not in a user guide is beyond my thinking, as it's especially nice to know should one have no interest in the lightsync/ghub app.

while not noise free - it's very quiet and if you type softly, noise is barely perceptible. an experienced typist should expect some audible feedback - that's subjective. hopefully logitech will have a fw update that fixes my bios boot issue, cause for those rare times when some bios configuration is required, u'll need a flashlight. yes, it's possible that behavior could be a personal problem but i've tried 3 boards and no change. i have kept the last one (see UPDATES) and returned the others to amazon. one other point, the serial number on the g213 box does not match the serial number on the actual g213 kybd inside; not sure who's doing the packaging but that's just weird.

don't really use the wrist-rest and could care less but it doesn't get in the way and frankly it's a bit of a plus.

many have written about key problems especially, the space bar. i can only hope it's a low percentage problem (see UPDATES). i've only had this for 2 days now but will likely buy again, if i must. it just feels and looks that good in the dark.

1st UPDATE (2nd g213):
so it's been about 10 days now and yes, these kybds (2) have some issues.
1) it does not light prior to the win 10 os load when booting. (2 different kybds now)
2) some combo key presses (ctrl+shift+m) are hit and miss. this was a defect with the kybd.
i suspect they have an engineering problem with some m-boards. if i shutdown with the kybd turned off, it will not light again after a reboot. the work-around is persnickety and i will call support. btw, they're quite responsive.

2nd UPDATE (3rd g213):
1) i'm becoming more convinced that the g213 has difficulty with the msi z490-pro m-board. all 3 exhibit the same no-illumination bios boot behavior after the initial use.
2) these kybds do have quality issues as all 3 had different behaviors with illumination. at least this last one seems to be recoverable. when the lights do not come on after a button press. the g-hub sw usually fixes the problem.
3) my 2nd kybd did have a combo key press defect with ctrl+shift+m keys and the need to be unplugged for several minutes before lighting. this one works much better but still no lights during the bios boot phase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great feel. Dim keys. Color a little off. Great for typing like the audio controls.

I've seen negative reviews for this not having the L shaped enter key, but I have to say I decided to buy this after reading those reviews, because I can't stand typing on keyboards in that configuration.

Audio controls include volume + and - and Mute.
Player controls include play/pause, stop, skipp back and forward.
There is a lighting on and off button and a gamer mode button to disable the windows keys.

This is a nice keyboard. The lighting is pretty customizable, but divided into zones, which I don't care for.
I was hoping to be able to light just the F and J keys to make it faster to find the homerow, but wasn't able to. I'm sure that ability would raise the price point on this a lot, so I haven't taken any stars for that.

I only ended up paying <$45 for this keyboard so I really can't be too disappointed for the money.

problem 3) the latest release (09 '21) of lightsync/g-hub has a confusing if not outright difficult user interface. worse, they have not updated their online user guide, so u've gotta tough it out on your own. this is especially true if you use "freestyle" which supports zone lighting.
problem 4) when viewing the kybd at an angle, there are lighting hotspots that are noticeable through the keys. yes, this is a nit but becomes somewhat annoying after hours of use.
. . . and that is why it only gets 3 stars.

now the brilliance part - oh what a kybd! the keys feel great and u have color ONLY where it's needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice for the price

I consider this a “hybrid” keyboard. The keys don’t have the loud, definitive click of a mechanical board, but the touch requires more pressure than the average membrane keyboard. You definitely get solid feedback when you strike a full keystroke. I have tried numerous keyboards of both types, but I keep coming back to this one. The lighting is great, too. Multiple colors and effects are available. My favorite effect is “breathe”. The brightness of the backlight is adjustable. . I have three computers in regular use. My Mac and my laptop both have a G213 attached, and my main desktop has a much more expensive DasKeyboard. I find the ergonomics all comparable, but the mechanical Das is obviously louder. It is also 4 times the price of the Logitech G213. I recommend the G213 keyboard for gaming or regular business use.

Have it for 2 years now and i still love it, only ick is that idk how to clean it properly... if anyone knows how to get the keys out, let me know!! i use it as a WFH keyboard and it’s still going strong!

I also have the logi lift mouse which i think is the ultimate combo (logi mx vertical for larger hands). I work on the computer 8+ hours a day so that tells you a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my 2nd - I don't use it for gaming though

I love this keyboard. This is the 2nd one I've bought and I love how they upgraded the palm/wrist rest from a shiny plastic. I found the perfect skin to fit over this which I wish I had done with the first one. My first one didn't die - it was just old and worn looking from using it on the daily - many times a day. The keys are bright when lit up though having lit keys isn't a necessity for me. That said, in the dark - it's much easier to find finger placement.

5.0 out of 5 stars super durable

this is a great keyboard, im even using it to type out this review, when the amazon driver came to deliver it he just chucked the package out the window onto my doorstep, and then he stepped out of the car and started beating the package with a metal baseball bat, and then he called his boys over so they can jump it as a team, and after that they started playing soccer with it and kicking it around the streets, and then after that they decided to throw it in the air, light up a fire work, and hit the package with the firework, this caused the package to burst into flames as they put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, and then they each took turns running it over with their cars as they drove off

when i knew i was in the clear, i went outside to open up the package, and found my keyboard in perfect condition, this is a great keyboard would definitely recommend 10/10

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably good for gaming but the keyboard is noisy

I was looking to replace a Logitech 740 which seems to be discontinued which I use for typing during meetings and interviews. This gaming one sounded promising and while shaped similiar in the layout the key clacking is too much for my specific use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lack of setting

Even the software is useless as far as setting, you cannot turn brighter or custom the way you want it. However, if you don't mind about the RGB adjustment or lights then this is a great keyboard. I love the armrest, helps my hands alot.

This keyboard works better than my EVGA keyboard Z20 which has better custom features but the detachable armrest suck and cost doubled; however this keyboard armrest attached to the keyboard so don't come off unless you broke it. In comparison, I love everything about this keyboard over EVGA Z20 except lack of setting that's why I only gave 4 stars.

Definitely the most comfortable and easy to use keyboard I've ever used. I have fat fingers so the spacing of the keys is perfect. Would recommend!
