5.0 out of 5 starsBest affordable wide angle!
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2022
I bought this lens as a budget astrophotography and landscape lens for my Sony A7iii. Firstly, I had read a few reviews on various sites that the threading would give me trouble attaching it to the Sony A7iii specifically, but I had zero issues with that at all.

Secondly, the lens does come with both a rear and front lens cap as well as a lens hood, however the lens hood is fairly cheap. Despite this, the lens hood still helps with reducing flaring and glare in images.

There are so many pros to this lens that will outweigh the cons, especially for the cost.

Pros - Small/compact, sharp at f/2.8, very affordable, decent build quality, distortion is very mild, close focus distance.

Cons - Autofocus is a tad slow and fairly noisy, build quality is decent but at the end of the day it's still plastic, some vignetting at f/2.8.

For me, I do primarily photography on it, so autofocus noise is fairly unimportant as I'm not doing film work. A lot of my photos are also on tripods and manually focused anyways, so autofocus speed is less important to me as well.

I'd say the image quality I've gotten from this lens is easily comparable with lenses that are twice the cost or more! If you're on a tight budget but still want a full frame lens, go for it!

Given the price, this is easily 5 stars!

It’s a very good light lens. But for professionals, I can’t trust it out on a shoot. The autofocus is fast but loud. The image is not as sharp distorted in the corners. The lens feels like plastic. I’d love this for everyday vlogs or hikes but not for professional projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressed with this ultra wide lens, especially for $249! Light, Sharp & Macro-Like
Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2021

This lens is great especially for the $249 that I paid. What I love most is the sharpness, the lightness of the weight and the close focus ability. I knew about the downsides having watched and read numerous reviews: slow focus, loud AF and distortion. The distortion is auto corrected in my Sony A7iii and also correctable in editing software so it isn't an issue. The AF is the price you pay and is not a deal breaker for me. The focal length of 20mm is plenty wide enough for someone like me that doesn't shoot a lot of super wide shots. The bokeh is pretty good and the f/2.8 is just good enough for some low light situations esp. with an A73 or better.

I think this lens is great for someone who wants a decent ultra wide for under $300 and maybe doesn't use wide angles too much and doesn't want to spend money on the Tamron 17-28 or Sony 20mm 1.8 or maybe someone who wants a super light ultra wide with good quality. This Tamron 20mm f/2.8 is smaller, lighter, cheaper and has a much closer focus distance than both of those popular lenses. The macro like capabilities allow for some unique shots not possible with other lenses. You can completely blur out the backgrounds even with an ultra wide focal length! If you're going to be doing a lot more VIDEO than maybe one of the other two lenses are better for you. For occasional video this Tammy is fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good budget lens, some downsides
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2023

This lens is what I feel is 4 stars. It does the trick and is a great price for a lens, which was all I was looking for when I purchased it. However, when compared to other lenses I own (my Sigma) this one has some downsides. The outer distortion is pretty noticeable so it’s not the best lens for those who need their lines to stay very straight. If you aren’t too worried about that, then this lens will do just fine. Note the 20mm is 30mm with ASPC crop. It’s still a wide enough lens for some good outdoor shots, but if you want something very wide and have a full frame camera, definitely look for something else. The other downsides: It’s not as sharp as it could be and isn’t the greatest in low light. I think if you’re looking for a budget lens to get some experience with that this is great, but wouldn’t expect perfection from it. I like that it’s economical and does take pretty good photos in outdoor lighting. The autofocus is loud and on the slower side, but I personally like hearing the little clicks it makes.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Affordable wide angle lens with great quality!

i needed a wider angle lens than 35mm for my Sony A7riii. After seeing samples of the Sony G master 16-35 2.8 I decided to check out the price. When I was finished laughing at the $2200 price tag I was left choosing between this $300 Tamron and the $900 Sigma Art 20mm 1.4. I decided to take a chance on this lens since I've had such an awesome experience with my workhorse lens 70-200 2.8 g2.
For $300 I expected a mediocre lens that I would regret buying. After returning from a trip to the Smoky Mountains I was blown away by the photos I took with lens. The COLOR POP and contrast really makes the photos look alive. (The 2 samples I uploaded are raw converted straight to jpg)
This lens is "soft and creamy" instead of "razor sharp" like the sigma arts and Sony g master lens Which is both good and bad. You can sharpen to your satisfaction in post and still get an excellent image. My 35mm sigma art is sometimes too sharp for landscapes and can make blades of grass and tree leafs very noisy and nasty so It's not an issue for me. At 2.8 it's a little too soft. f4 to f13 is perfect. f16 is a little soft and requires a little clarity and sharpening in post.
No the autofocus is not lighning fast like other reviews say but its not sluggish either. I love that it's weather proof but wish It had a af to mf switch on it that is needed for astrophotograhy and very low light shots. You will have to use back button auto focus to eliminate this issue.
It's a nifty little lens that can capture some excellent quality images. For the price I can not complain about this lens besides the lack of a af to mf switch on it. Grab it and use the $ you saved to put towards another lens you need!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sharp across the frame

Actually this is the second chance I've given this lens. I ordered this same lens about 2 or 3 months ago. Had all sorts of trouble focusing and really wasn't sharp across the frame. Just recently I decided to give it another chance (thinking perhaps I just got a bad copy). This more recent lens is totally different. Yes, the focusing isn't perfect but much improved (using it on an older Sony a7rii). Probably the focusing is even better on a newer camera. For the most part, when stopped down the image is sharp across the frame. The contrast and colors are wonderful. The lens feels solid and is probably the best value for money for a 20mm f/2.8 lens! The focusing is a bit slow for me but I can live with that. I do mostly still pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some limitations BUTTTTT
Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2020

Let me start by saying I'm a pretty big fan of Tamron, I own the Tamron 28-75 on my A7III.
The price point of this lense is VERY good for the overall quality.
That being said, Its not perfect...

1) Auto Focus is a tad slower, alot louder! To me I really don't mind how loud it is, as I won't be vlogging with this, however I do need to get used to the fact it does not grab onto the subject as fast as the 28-75. It's not wildly slow, it's just a bit slower, and if you're not used to that and you're running and gunning you might miss focus. Take a breath, give it a second, and take the shot. I'm just so used to trusting my 28-75 to catch focus lightening fast, I need to keep in mind this is slower.

2) at 2.8 I have not been able to produce a sharp image, and honestly it's hard for me to even tell where the focus is, it's so soft...

HOWEVER; AT 5.6, 8.0, 11, ITS TACK SHARP.
Again, for the price I don't mind this, especially since I really don't think I'd ever want to shoot at 2.8 with this lense. I bought this for wide landscapes, or Architecture where I personally want alot of detail and sharpness.
I haven't tested it with astrophotography.

For the price, it's a great lense that CAN produce quality pictures, with slight limitations that again for the price, I can totally live with.

I will update this with photos asap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid lens depending on what you want it for

This has produced some nice close-up shots in the field and is a fun ultra-wide angle, but if you buy to use for video, the constant autofocus noise will likely ruin the experience for you. I bought this lens to use with my Sony a7ii as a webcam during the pandemic. On calls, it was constantly autofocusing and making clicking noises the whole time. Even when using it for recording video with a shotgun mic, the noise was still audible on the mic. I can't recommend this lens for any video application, but I highly recommend it if you are looking for an inexpensive UW lens for your Sony.

If you want to buy a lens, find a more in-depth review on youtube or a blog dedicated to review of lens. The following are my personal experiences.

The only edited photo is the starburst (cropped and color adjusted). The rest are as-is on a Sony A7Rii

I find this lens to be wonderful. Great macro and bokeh (see flower pictures with blurred background). I also really like the starburst, a wonderful 14 point (see sun burst image). This lens is light, inexpensive (under $300), relatively bright (f-stop of 2.8), and comes with weather sealing. For a A7rii user, I like to pick lenses that offer weather sealing to take full advantage of my camera's weather sealing and (honestly) a little more peace of mind when in harsher environments (the beach with sand and humidity and water).

Something that I have heard people complain about: This lens does have a decent amount of barrel-distortion. It does but honestly that's what a 20mm wide angle is going to give you (unless you decide to spend $2500, but then you compromise on weight and size). I find the barrel distortion to be forgivable (sometimes I'm looking for that effect in shots), not really a factor (distortion occurs in blurred regions), or easily correctable (use of post processing).

I wouldn't buy this as my first lens for a camera (20mm is not good for portraits, or wildlife) but I a good 2nd or third addition.
