Compact, great product and price

With the world changing over to USB C this little adapter is going to save you more than you know. There are so many USB-A female ports on everything, laptops, pc's, cars, chargers, smart appliances, I even have a USB-A port on my couch so I can plug in, that this little adapter changing them from USB A to USB C is going to save you lots of money, aggravation and cost of replacing that item or buying new cables. Now you can just plug this into a USB-A port and that new USB-C to C cable is useful, you don't have to buy any more USB-A to C cables, just USB-C to C so that in the future when you eventually replace that old laptop, TV, charger etc. you won't need to buy a whole lot of new cables.
While this product states it is capable of 10Gbps, it isn't going to be any faster that the port you are plugging this into, so data and charging aren't going to magically increase. Nonetheless, it is a great product, I may buy a couple more at this price to insert into existing USB-A ports on things I am not replacing anytime soon.

USB-C end should be double-sided

According to the instructions (and verified by testing) the female USB-C end of this adapter is only USB 3.1 when the USB-C cable is plugged in one way. Turn it around and it's USB 2.0.

First of all, USB-C is supposed to be double-sided so it doesn't matter which way it goes in. That's one of the benefits over micro-USB. USB 3.1 is supposed to be backwards compatible with USB 2.0, so why do we need to choose? Second, it's annoying because there's no way to know which way the cable is inserted until you do it and test the speed by transferring data. Then when you realize it's in USB 2.0 mode, you have to stop the transfer, reconnect the other way around, and restart the transfer.

The only reason I didn't immediately return this is because my needs are basically permanent; the adapter doesn't need to be removed often. It's still annoying though, because they come in a pair so I know every time I want to use the other one, I'm going to have to go through this connection dance to figure out the appropriate orientation. What a terrible design!

I am using this for a backup battery pack so I can charge my iPhone and iPad mini using their stock cords. Both stock cords terminate to a USB-C and my backup battery pack only will supply power off of a USB-A. These adapters work perfectly and have a good solid connection. Don't waste your money on the cheap lesser quality ones. Spend a few more dollars and go with something that will outlast your device!

Works fine, but not for SSD external drives

Quality of material is great, also looks well, the performance is ok, but doesn't work well for SSD I bought this to replace a loss adapter (USB C to USB A), I made a test with CrystalDisk with 3 SSD external drives that I have (M2, and 2.5 inch format) both shows good readings on read speeds (more than 400Mbps) but for write speeds the performance was poor (less than 30Mbps) also this is visible a latency to start the copy of files from the PC thru the drives.

Being a EE, I've spent a bunch of time working with USB Type-C connectors in my designs. When I got my new iPhone 15 and was only getting 480Mbps speeds when transferring pictures to my PC, I had to investigate. Had a hunch what it was, but had to prove it.

Got in my lab, busted out my USB tester and started testing. Turns out I didn't own a single cable, or adapter that had either the TX/RX1 or the TX/RX2 pairs terminated. Not even the cable that shipped with the phone.

The only data pins connected, were the legacy USB 1.0, D+ and D-. Those only support 480Mbps. There was the answer.

Back to the review of this USB adapter. I was on the hunt for a Type-A to Type-C adapter, that would actually support 10Gbps. This passed with flying colors. The two picture show me flipping the Type-C connection and you see it swap between the TX/RX1 to TX/RX2 pairs just like it should.

Also have a shot of a proper 40Gbps cable should look like as well as the cable that shipped with my phone. See a couple missing lit LED's?

If you need a high speed Type-A to Type-C adapter, look no further.

Title: Multiple product review for USB-C hard drive expansion

Summary: I purchased two different hard disk drive (HDD) enclosures, for use with both a 2.5" solid state drives (SSDs), and 3.5" HDDs, so that I could swap between drives. Primary use was to transfer data between computers, and backup as a secondary purpose.

Details: Main desktop computer is a Dell XPS 8920. System drive is a 250GB SSD. Two other HDDs for data, 1.0TB and 6.0TB. External USB connections are: USB-C 3.1 (rear), USB-A 3.1 (rear), USB-A 3.0 (front). The highest transfer speeds are via the USB-C 3.1 connection, and the USB-A 3.0 ports on the front are not far behind. The SSD via USB-C was faster than the HDD via the internal SATA bus (expected).

Test Method: The test program I use is ATTO Disk Benchmark (freeware). I tried a few different ones, and settled on this one because the result picture was relatively easy to compare to other results. I created a 50GB partition on the SSD, and used the same for all tests and configurations. When evaluating results, I mainly looked at the transfer speeds for files size 1 MB or larger.

Observations:
1) There was some variation in the transfer speed between the various adapters. Both the Orico and the Nekteck were the fastest with 505 MB/s Write, and 540 MB/s Read. 3rd place was the VCZHS Tech Sata to USB adapter with 420 MB/s Write, and 440 MB/s Read.
2) When changing from USB-C to USB-A 3.0, the orientation of USB-C connector somes times made a difference. The difference is staggering, you'll loose 90% of the speed. Once I established an orientation for the USB-A connector, I tested and then marked (with a permanent sharpie) the faster orientation.
3) Heat soak, with the plastic enclosures could be a problem, even in an air conditioned office. One of the reasons I bought the ICY DOCK adapter was to put the 2.5" SSD or HDD in it, and that effective functions as a heat sink. Both the Nekteck and Orico CLEAR PLASTIC carriers had very tiny (or none) vent holes, so air flow will be minimal. For the Nekteck, I left the top cover off so that some heat could escape.
4) Other than the XAOSUN USB-A adapters, the other adapters and cables all functioned correctly, and did not reduce transfer speed.

Conclusion:
Invest the time if you purchase these products to verify (using a freeware program) that the transfer speeds are functioning correctly.

Note that one end of this adapter is for a USB C connection (like what's on the new iPhones. Unless your computer has a USB C female receptacle, most other connections USB1, USB2 won't work. You'll need a small crossover connection like this one.
