How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars10/10 Perfect AF, small, lightweight, sharp at 1.8, smooth bokeh, no CA, nice to have aperture dial.
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020
If you're looking for a fast wide angle prime for Sony FE and are on a budget, look no more.
I'm very happy with this lens.

It's small and lightweight. It feels solidly built.
Optics are as perfect as they can be in this year of 2020.
Zero chromatic aberration on my a7iii using Capture One Pro 12.
Shooting stars I can see a TINY bit of CA, but not enough to bother me one iota.
Auto focus is fast and accurate, basically perfect for both still and video on my a7iii.
Focus transitions are smooth and little focus breathing.
I used to use, and still do somewhat, modified Nikkor primes on canon cameras and got used to having an aperture dial. It's really nice to have. I've accidentally bumped it from 1.8 to 2 or 2.5 in my lens pouch, and that's messed up a shot or two, but it's a quick fix if you're paying attention and you can always put it on A and control via camera. When it's on A it's locked in place and isn't going anywhere. For me I like it.

The hype for this lens is real. Sony knocked it out of the park imo.
I was looking to get a wide angle prime but didn't want to dish out the money for the 24 1.4 GM.
I'm very pleased with my 20mm. 10/10 Thanks Sony.

3.0 out of 5 starsQuality optics but awkward focal length.
Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2021
Beautiful lens and great optics. The focal length, for me, wasn’t easy to get used to or find much practical use for walking around. You need a wide scene and then you need to be extremely close to a subject.... just my opinion but it doesn’t make much sense to use this length for my style. Your mileage may vary. 35mm and 50mm are much more versatile and useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp, fast, great focusing.
Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2020

I was hesitant on the price of this lens.
For much less I could get a slightly slower lens from other manufacturers but I chose to bite the bullet and go for the best quality.
I am very happy with this decision. The fast lens f 1.8 lens is a great fit for me because I shoot so many pictures in the dark and low light environments. The picture quality is superb wide open and definitely sharp enough for the pictures that I take.

FOCUSING: This new method of focus driving is far superior to anything else that I have tried.
Nothing that I have beats it in speed, accuracy and volume.
That's right, volume. This lens is nearly silent which is a huge plus for hybrid photo/video shooters.

With that there are negatives:
This lens is physically larger than my other wide angle lenses (28mm f 2.,8) but that is due to the amount of high quality fast glass in this lens. It is totally worth the weight to me, but if you are hiking around with it and don't need the maximum aperture of f 1.8 I'd go with a lightweight compact lens.
I've had my concerns with the lens being damaged while it is powered off. You can feel the assemblies moving around under their own weight inside the lens. I am slightly worried about a large impact causing damage to the lens. I have not heard any other people reporting this as an issue, so I assume I am just worrying for no reason.

Conclusion: I'd buy this lens again if I had to. This is by far my favorite wide angle lens that I have tried yet.
I'd go for it over the 24mm GM if you're deciding between the two, the differences are almost meaningless when not compared back to back.

The sharpness and image quality puts it almost in the same league as the GM lenses are.
It is perfect for the Sony a6700 as a 30mm full frame equivalent.
I mainly use it to record the majority of my latest Youtube videos and I am very happy with it.

This lens is fantastic. It’s super light, very sharp, focuses fast, and 20mm offers a wide angle look without being too exaggerated or distorted. I’d say the only real con is that it is a little expensive for a lens that isn’t a G Master. Even still, I like to think I’m easily getting my money’s worth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lens for product shots

The media could not be loaded.
The Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 is a great lens for wide shots and close ups for shooting products on a table. I have a camera slider with wheels that I can roll around the product on the same table. The image sharpness is great and the bokeh is so good being that the lens is very wide. It is also good for vlogging so you can get yourself and the background surroundings in the frame. I was debating on getting a f/4 lens but I'm glad i got this one instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharp images, great for travel but it has an issue i didn't like.

When you stop shooting for a bit and you lift your camera to take a picture the lens actually needs like 1-2 seconds to turn on because there is a lens inside that needs to adjust for the photo. I found this very annoying especially if you're walking around and shooting. Another thing I did not like is If you shake the lens the glass inside the lens will rattle. OVERALL it does take sharp images and very good to carry around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible lens for video! Compared to 16-35 f4
Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2021
Style: ‘w/ 20mm G’Verified Purchase
I had the Zeiss 16-35mm f4 before this lens (for video), I thought that not being able to go to 35mm would’ve been a huge hit to the versatility in creating videos.. after using it for a few weeks, I found this lens was incredibly worth the trade! The lowlight is so good that it practically stays on my camera all day, and it is sharp and clear in dark situations (no more noisy videos). The close focusing distance let’s me get very close with very little distortion. Not to mention it’s small and light, I do not regret trading in the zeiss 16-35mm f4 for this.
I do not use this for photos due to the wide focal length, but it is great for YouTube thumbnails, very wide and sharp. Awesome lens, highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible value

This is an incredible lens for the value. Having a Sony full frame wide lens as fast as 1.8 for the price it's absolutely worth it. I compared this lens with a Sony 24mm GM lens, twice as expensive and I can tell you they're very close in detail and sharpness. I'm using it on my Sony FX3 specifically for videos and it does not disappoint. I totally recommend it, if you are in the market for a wide prime. Currently my set includes a 20mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 all Sony.

5.0 out of 5 stars Went through a lot of lenses to find this one!
Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2022

I have experimented with a lot of 18-20mm lenses on my Sony a7riii. I've had the Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8, Samyang 18mm f/2.8, Sigma 20mm, and Tamron 20mm. Up to that point the sharpest lens was one of the cheapest, the Tamron 20mm lens, but it had a lot of distortion. Once I discovered The Sony 20mm, my search was over. One of the sharpest lenses I've used with very little distortion. Plus, it was great for video work. It's only drawback was some focus breathing, but I'm more of a stills photographer than a video guy. Plus, it is f/1.8 and not a huge lens. This compliments my Sony 50mm G lens quite well. On short trips when I'm packing extremely light, I will take this 20mm lens, along with the 50 g lens, and the Sigma 90mm lens (great traveling kit). I prefer primes. But I do use the Tamron 28-75 G2 and 70-180 lenses for event work. And my Samyang 135mm and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 for portraits and more indoor work. But you can't go wrong with The Sony 20mm f/1.8. Well worth it!
