5.0 out of 5 starsBest $150 spent on my desktop PC audio experience.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 6, 2018
Let me preface saying that I'm not a proper audiophile or a sound engineer in any aspect. I just like good sounding music, and can tell the difference between bland and exciting audio.

My first impressions of this were how nice the card looks in person. Usually cards look pretty minimalist with their PCB exposed, although there are a few that have nice aesthetics. This is the best IMO in that regard. The included equipment is fine, nothing special, and the drivers are automatically installed, with additional resources on their website. You will need to have the additional molex power cable available to plug in to this card to power it. The other connector is for RGB, which is optional and I currently am not using, but is great for those who like lighting up their build. The connections for the front audio connectors are fine, with one caveat (will mention below). The back connections are as expected and seem of high quality (won't break easily).

Once the card was set up, the use of the sound blaster connect 2 program was simple enough. One of my favorite features is the easy to use EQ. My current headphones are the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro, and they are slightly harsh on the high end. I used the EQ to adjust the top end -6db. Now they sound much smoother to me. On top of this, you can save multiple EQ settings for various setups or preferences. The sound blaster effects settings (e.g. surround simulation, crystalizer, bass, vocal and smart volume) all work very well and can be distinctly noticed moving the sliders from 0 to 100. They can individually be tuned and saved for multiple devices as well. One note, if you use the direct headphone or direct stereo output options in the program, the EQ and sound effect enhancements will be bypassed to send the highest quality, unfiltered sound to your device. This is generally for purists who want the best reproduction of recordings with high end equipment. Most people won't notice the difference on typical listening devices.

One of the other features that is marketed on this card is the discrete headphone amp, which is great for anyone who wants the features of the DAC/amp without having a separate device to configure on your desk. My headphones sound fine with normal phones powering them, but they never get that loud or dynamic in sound. Plugged into this card, they become incredibly dynamic and can be ear shattering loud while staying clear. The bass alone will rumble your head. However, I've found that there is a difference between the front panel connector (typical headphone port) and the rear headphone connector. They both sound great, but the rear connector is better shielded and ends up sounding cleaner (IMO) and louder. This could be because the headphone amp is cleaner coming from the rear connector, but this will require you to plug your cans to the back of your PC which is awkward.

My desktop speakers are the Klipsch 2.1 setup. They sound pretty good regardless of your PC's audio processing, but on this card, they sound A LOT better. I can now shake the whole room and the nearby rooms with this tiny setup. I was immediately impressed with the result from this, and I've been jamming all my previous tunes to them like it is the first time I've heard music. I imagine with better quality speakers and speaker amps, you can really push some quality sound, especially for the price of this card, which is much much lower than mid-tier and upper-tier DAC.

Some complications from the card:
-Switching audio outputs from the interface (i.e. switching from headphone to desktop speaker) during audio playback can cause audio to stop playing, and might require a restart of the audio source.
-I had issues with the rear input connector, although for my mic (antlion mod mic 5.0), I just use the front panel input which works just fine.
-The input audio is very low for me. I have the input gain maxed out, which makes it pick up my voice at a normal volume.
- The biggest issue: you will probably start spending more money on better speakers and headphones to really utilize what this card can do for your PC. But, that is what you wanted anyways... right?

Overall, this is a solid 4.5 with the few issues I have with it, but I bumped it to a 5 on here because it is certainly better than a 4. If you haven't dived into better audio processing, then this is a great start for the price. You will immediately know what you've been missing out on once you get everything set up.

3.0 out of 5 starsIMPORTANT - To anyone on AMD Ryzen with a B550 or X570 board
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 14, 2021
Overall, I like this card a lot when it works. There is however a bug that as of now has been an issue for about a year with this card on B550 and X570 chipsets: Occasionally the audio will swap channels, so the center may play out your rear right speaker or your right speaker might be swapped with your left speaker. This seems to randomly occur and sometimes you can have no problem for hours and other times it pops up rather quickly. The issue is temporarily fixed by switching to headphone mode and then back to speaker mode, but this is a bit inconvenient at times. It seems to be related to PCIe 4.0 as well as faster RAM speeds (above 3000KHz), and while Creative says that the latest BIOS updates and AMD chipset drivers should fix the issue, it doesn't. Any correspondence with Creative has pretty much been a "eh, it's a known issue, but we have no idea how to fix it," type deal.

I would recommend this card wholeheartedly to anyone not on either of those motherboard chipset/Intel users, but if you use AMD make sure that you're aware of this issue as it can be a minor pain. Like I mentioned, though, it doesn't pop up horribly often so I don't want to drop the rating any more than 3 stars. It really is a great quality card in spite of this issue, and I hope that the issue will be patched with a new driver update from Creative. I'm not holding my breath, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kick A** Sound Card

Its been a while since I had a sound card and I dont normally write reviews but given the circumstances this one felt needed. I recently bought a brand new LG 3.1.2 ch Soundbar and was disappointed I was only getting stereo with my current tv setup (apparently ARC cant give you 5.1 on a Pc only eARC can which my tv doesnt support). After some research I found this card and decided to try it out. What a transformation! Using the optical out I am getting loud clear and beautiful 5.1 Dolby in my games! The software works quite well and gives you some great eq and mixing options. If you were like me and on the fence about purchasing this then rest assured for the money you cant find better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect with one annoyance

My primary reason for this purchase was the digital optical output. I built a new computer and that was a must have when I chose my motherboard. Oddly, it has no Dolby or dts encoder so it's useless!! I purchased this so I can use my 7.1 equipment correctly again as I have for many years with my old motherboards built in sound chip. It works fantastic, but I have 2 complaints. I've reached out to creative about this and they tell me they can't make the problem happen on their end. It didi t with windows 11 and windows 10. Fresh install both times. My problem is every time I turn on my computer or restart it, I have to open the creative app and go to encoder and change it. Otherwise I have no sound. It will say its still on dts or Dolby but i won't have any sound unless I switch it to the other one or off and back on, then it works. It's like the encoder isn't starting up with windows, I don't know. My other complaint is when you use the encoder you have no volume control. My old asrock z97x killer board had a built in dts encoder. The volume worked with it even on digital. I can always use the remote for my Denon receiver that it's connected to, but I feel like I shouldn't have to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good hardware, decent software, room for improvement
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 9, 2020

I purchased the Creative AE-7 to replace a Sound Blaster Z. My primary use is for gaming with headphones. I do not use speakers with this card. I currently use Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm and DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm headphones with it. While the Z drove the DT 770s without a problem, they did not adequately drive the DT 990s. The primary reason for upgrading to the AE-7 was for improved sound quality and the ability to properly drive the DT 990s.

The Creative AE-7 hardware (card) is very good. The sound quality is noticeably improved over the Z, and the DT 990s are properly driven. Whereas these headphones sounded thinner with the Z, they sound full and rich with the AE-7. The AE-7 brings out all of the little details in audio that I didn't hear before, which makes it a joy to listen to. I ended up hooking up the headphones directly to the headphone jack for the best results.

The supplied ACM accessory is not as good. Because the volume that is set in the OS directly controls the signal that goes to the output, the ACM audibly distorts, even when the knob is turned to only 25%. For this reason, I find the ACM completely unusable. A better design would have been to separate the OS signal from the card signal. Other competing products allow for 100% OS signal to be provided as input into the card, with a separate volume control for the final signal that goes out of the card. Had the AE-7 been designed this way, with the ACM controlling the card's signal output directly, I would find it far more useful.

So, the main card is fantastic. The ACM is essentially a paperweight. Which I can live with, because the ACM was a nice to have, not a necessity. It just means that someone considering the AE-7 needs to understand the ACM limitations with higher impedance headphones.

The software (Sound Blaster Command) is a big improvement over the older software that was bundled with the Z. Installing and configuring it was seamless and painless. I especially like the selectable gains for different impedances and how well the virtual 7.1 sounds. I used Equalizer APO and HeSuVi with the Z, but find the virtual surround on the AE-7 so good that I don't feel the need to use a different HRTF solution. It really does sound that good. Sound positioning is spot on, the sound clarity is great in all channels, and the volume is balanced all around. I primary play MMORPGs, and ended up using the Witcher 3 SBX profile for the surround setting. I do not use the Crystalizer or the Bass controls, preferring to manually equalize.

The documentation for the software is lean, and lacking in detail in some key places. Specifically: There really needs to be documentation (any documentation) about what the different default SBX profile settings actually do. For example, what differentiates "RPG" from "Adventure and Action"? Having a short explanation in a bullet list would not take much time to write, and add a lot of value to the documentation. As a user, I should not have to guess, or use trial and error, to determine what a provided setting does, and what its intended use is for.

Finally, thoughts about the equalizer. I found the equalizer passable, but disappointing. The provided functionality is a limited fixed band equalizer, with a pre-amp and the standard 10 frequencies. The pre-amp is not labeled in the GUI, and not documented, leaving me to guess as to what it was there for. These little details are annoying, especially since they are so easy to fix. Despite these shortcomings, it does an adequate job at letting me apply Oratory1990 measurements; adequate because the equalizer range is clamped at +/-12dB. It would be more useful if this were widened to +/-24dB. I understand that the range was clamped to prevent clipping, but properly applied settings should fix clipping. Even better would be an option to use a parametric equalizer, with configurable center frequencies and gains. For a card marketed as "audiophile", I associate a parametric equalizer with this level of control.

In summary, I am pleased with the AE-7 overall. For what I bought it for, it does the job nearly perfectly. It has fantastic sound quality and drives my higher impedance headphones great. The ACM is not useful, due to distortion and degraded sound quality. Most of the software is well designed and very easy to use. The virtual surround is everything I could ask for. The equalizer is adequate, and does the job, but would benefit from some additional work to bring it up a notch in quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative is back baby!

I was never a real fan of the RGB craze. I mean it is cool, but it was all fluff.. I am silicon dating myself here.. I remember going to Electronics Boutique's (before it became EB games) at the mall and EggHead looking at the newest sound blaster 16. Then I remember getting the Audigy and then Audigy 2.. then the RX... but that was all before 2008ish... Creative kinda went silent when it came to innovating the next big audio jump.. I do not blame them with MP3s with so called "cd quality" - 128bit I mean what was the point? 24bit audio was way more than enough. recording while respectable still did not hold their own to the dedicated capture cards. They re-focused their attention to other products.

Then they came out with the 32bit pro audio. FINALLY. Not that it really means anything at this point. I do not know of anything out there that can take advantage of that kind of fidelity. I was excited to see the AE-7 card designed for gamers. 127db 5.1 discreet surround or 7.1 virtual. with a ESS SABRE 9018 DAC. Plus a custom Bi-amp dedicated/designed for audiophile grade headphones with an impedance of 1 - 600ohms.

I picked up this card because a neon green brand with 3 snakes told me I could no longer get replacement ear pads for less than a two year old headphones from them and they recommended I get new ones. So I did.. I picked up the EPOS I Sennheiser GSP 600. Respectably a starter audiophile headphone. amazing gaming headphones. I spend most of my day on headphones from work using MS teams, music.. Pandora, FLAC, or movies either digital or streamed. they all sound amazing. audio is super crisp. Windows 10 did not have a issue with the drivers like some other card MFGs.

Their software is actually really good. like Nvidia as with optimized graphic profiles per game they have done the same type of optimization. Like an EQ but it is much more tuned to the type of game than just adjusting hertz. I probably hear the footsteps in CoD much clearer and louder than my opponent.

I think the days of games having tailored audio based on the chip (like what they did with Audigy) are gone, but I think creative has taken the correct step in still being able to bring you that type of experience.

This is not a cheap card, but IMHO it is the best card when compared to the other cards on the market at a similar price point. it does not have all the added accessories like some of the others, but I think if you were able to put them head to head you can hear the difference. If you plan on using $30 headphones I wouldn't bother.

It is a lot harder to gauge audio. everyone hears differently some folks hear frequencies better/worse than others... and you cannot really pause it and study the difference like you can with a graphics card or tv. I can tell you that for me personally. I can hear the difference. I have had a noticeable difference in my gaming performance across the board. music sounds better. The mic is really good as well. I can speak normal and have not had a complaint from anyone that I was too loud or to soft. no hissing or buzzing. Even though that is more of a headphone thing it does attest to the protection they put in place on the hardware to minimize EMI interference from the rest of the PC components. That being said I would still recommend putting the card as far away from the other cards as possible! lol.

I do have one gripe. switching between the headphone and speaker inputs is done in software. not a big deal it opens quickly and is easy to get to I just wish there was a toggle switch I could add to the taskbar or a right-click option on the service icon in the notifications area or a button/switch on the volume command thingy that sits on your desk.

Anyway... that is it. I hope this helps you decide one way or another. OH for those looking for some RGB goodness it has some.. minimal but some. just my style.

I upgraded my motherboard to the latest z690 series and discovered that the new boards are integrating audio with whats effectively USB connections so hardware connections are really software. As such, sound is awful and can barely get loud coming out of even high-end boards.
This card is awesome as a fix. Sound quality is great and the software you install has an excellent equalizer to fine tune the sound. Switching between audio devices is easy and the little headphone controller that you can get in addition can REALLY pump out the audio. Unlike my motherboard, I can easily blow out my speakers with this system if I tried.
It solved my issues of microphone input being incredibly quiet too, so this card is a complete win.

I bought this card with some mistrust, I thought that the sound was going to improve very little or equal to the integrated chip of my motherboard MSI X570 GAMING PLUS, when the sound card arrived I proceeded to install it and what a surprise I got, the sound of my PC improved a lot compared to the integrated chip, more defined treble and bass, more resonance and power, overall a more pure sound, crisp and defined, worth every penny of investment in this sound card, I am very satisfied with my purchase, the control panel has many customization options, I have only touched some, tested on speakers LOGITECH 5. 1 Z906.

Update 2019-01-26: Regarding the issued with the line in not being detected, I have been in contact with Ceative, and I must give them a big complement, as they have been in touch regularly and fairly quickly. With their help, I was able to solve the issue, sort of.

If you need to use line in, then it will work if you remove the front panel connection from the card. Once I did that, the line in option magically appeared. The person working on this case informed me that he will let the relevant people know about this issue.

Again, I am impressed at the efficiency and accuracy of their response. I have upped my rating to 5 stars.

Original review...

As far as sound goes, this is much better than my on-board sound. I have no use for LED lighting, I never have, so I have not connected the LED strip.

A few things bug me about this card, or more to the point, the software used to customize the sound. There are 2 different software packages. 1) The older Sound Blaster Connect 2 and 2) the newer Sound Blaster command. I prefer the sound blaster command software because the interface is better and more logical. However, with the Command software, there is no customization or settings for the LED lighting. As I have also discovered, you cannot use Line IN as an input if using only the Command software. Line in does not appear in windows sound settings either. When you choose the multi Input configuration the only choice is Microphone or Front Panel Microphone.

Upon installing the older SB Connect2 software, I was able to enable the line in as an input, and it also appeared in the Command software. The connect software does not let you adjust the speaker and input volumes, the balance and quality settings - these must be done through the windows sound settings. Why??? It also does not show the "What U Hear option. Again, a visit to windows sound settings is necessary to enable/adjust this. The newer Command software allows all volume/balance and quality settings to be made without the necessity to visit the windows sound settings - which Microsoft has made very well hidden.

So to achieve full functionality from this card, you need to use 2 different software packages, which will both run in the background, wasting system resources. It might be nice if Creative created an all inclusive software/driver package that let you do everything in one application. Having to use 2 different software apps is not very "creative" at all.

You can output up to 32 bit 92kHz with sound settings enabled and up to 32 bit 384kHz with Direct Sound turned on - this disables all sound enhancements (EQ, SBX). You can record up to 32 bit 96 kHz, which is fine for me as I use 24/96 to record my vinyl. There is a variable gain headphone amp, but it's not clear if that just applies to the back headphone jack, or to the front one as well. Which brings to mind another annoyance - the SB cards use to have the option to mute the rear line outs (speakers) when headphones were plugged into the front - not so anymore. You have to open the software (either one), and select the headphone output manually.

Sound wise, the quality is great, but the software options kill what should be a pleasant experience with this card.
