3.0 out of 5 starsDisappointed
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2023
I bought this 2TB SSD HD with the intention of using it for backing up both my computer and phone. First, I plugged it into my phone, which formatted it for that, but nothing happened. There's no "back up" feature, which I was hoping for, and customer support confirmed that there is no tool supported by Samsung for this. It's just drag and drop. When I asked, it seems that I would have to know exactly where I left off with the last back up in order to not duplicate files, and that just seems a little clumsy.

I wanted to check to make sure it would work with my computer as well, before transferring a bunch of stuff over. When I plugged it in, it reformatted for the computer. I wanted to partition the hard drive so that it was split in two: 1TB NTFS for my Windows computer, 1TB exfat for my phone. I was able to do this from my computer, and backed it up (which took a VERY LONG TIME). It seemed to have worked, though the backup is taking up less space on HD than what I have on my computer. I also cannot see any file previews, though the files seem to be there. Still, I am hesitant to trust factory resetting my computer, which is what I had planned to do.

When I plugged my phone back in, it does not recognize the partition I made, and it wants to format it again, which will wipe everything! Samsung support was no help with this issue. Their suggestion was to format it exfat and use for both, which I do not trust, as exfat files are not secure and can become corrupted, leading to data loss. This is not something I want to risk when entrusting ALL of my information, the operating system, important files and programs to one drive while I wipe my computer.

This is very frustrating. I was hoping to not have to spend more money and get another, separate HD, with way more space than I need, but it looks like that is what I am going to have to do, or else risk losing all my information.

The SAMSUNG SSD T7 is blazing fast, with read speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s. This means you can transfer large files, like movies and games, in seconds. I was able to transfer a 50GB file in less than a minute!

Compact and portable:

The T7 is small and lightweight, making it perfect for taking on the go. It's about the size of a credit card, so it will easily fit in your pocket or bag.

Durable and rugged:

The T7 is built to last. It's drop-resistant from up to 6 feet and is also water and dust resistant. This means you don't have to worry about it getting damaged if you accidentally drop it or spill something on it.

Stylish design:

The T7 comes in a sleek and stylish design that looks great with any laptop or computer. It's available in three colors: black, red, and blue.

Easy to use:

The T7 is plug-and-play, so you don't need to install any software to use it. Just plug it into your computer and you're good to go.

Security:

The T7 comes with AES 256-bit hardware encryption to help keep your data safe. This means that even if someone loses your drive, they won't be able to access your data without the password.

Overall, the SAMSUNG SSD T7 is an excellent portable SSD. It's fast, durable, and stylish, and it's easy to use. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great way to store their data on the go.

Here are some additional positive things to mention about the T7:

It comes with a three-year warranty.
It's compatible with PC, Mac, and Android devices.
It includes two cables: USB Type-C to Type-C and USB Type-C to Type-A.
It's energy efficient, so it won't drain your battery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, reliable, familiar...

I now own several generations (and 3 colors!) of Samsung T SSDs- T3, T5, T7 plus the Shield version.

They've been my long-time go-to, especially as prices come down and file sizes go up.
Thin-sliced from my 1st review: It's an easy-to-use and very secure little device, fast and simple to use across devices and even systems, as plugging in it opens a choice of OS and a window to log-in. The password is always what you assign at set-up, and it's hard-wired into the device, so it stays secure, requiring password every time it's first connected.

Tech specs you can read. It's fast, blazing when connected to other SSD's. Gets a little toasty with huge transfers (like my 1GB initial transfer from another drive). It comes with two types of USB cables, which work well, and secure it well even if pulled around a bit on its short length. I'd note that the T7 Shield is an exception, consistently coming (in my experience) with a poorly designed connector/receptacle, nearly impossible to keep a solid connection unless you don't breathe or vibrate things when you type. That bad.

I digress. This - the basic T7 (newer software interface but basically same as T5 - is one of those things that "just works". Like the others, on the Mac it may hava some small quirks - like saying it's disconnected when you first connect, or similar, but it works fine, 100% of the time for me thus far, all of them (knock on wood). Unless you really truly like the idea of the ridged design and heat-dissipation of the Shield, I'd advise against it (I called Samsung, they said they'd send a new cord, and didn't, and claim not to know about the port/plug issue). That off my chest, I love and swear by the T5s and T7s, and caveat emptor on the Shields.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good drive, fast, gets a little hot.

So this drive is exactly what I was looking for. Good capacity, I can fit it in my pocket. It has password protection, and the interface can go USB A or C. It also didn't break the bank. I downloaded the free migration software from Sony, and am in the process of a data migration from my old laptop to my new one which will arrive soon. I also plan to use it as backup storage for my new laptop.

The unit is FAST compared to some external drives I have used. I migrated 396 gigs of data in less than 45 minutes. I am a little concerned about the heat put off by the drive. It did seem a bit hotter when it was working then I would have expected, but the data seems to have survived the transition. I will write more once I have finished the migration process.

Overall, I think it's a good drive.

Got this badboy on sale for a cool hundo, and it's worth every penny. Plenty of space to store 4k files, and transferring said large files is a breeze thanks to how fast this hard drive is. Can't go wrong with this hotrod.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great security
Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2023

I’m not the most tech savvy and wanted backup on an external drive for graphics heavy work and photos. I remember the challenge of making my last external drive compatible and especially deleting old files, so I was a little anxious trying to find a solution.

In case it helps someone else, I work primarily on an iPad Pro in a design program (Affinity) and needed a backup storage solution besides the Cloud. I didn’t really want a second cloud solution to be backup and can’t use an external drive with the iPad. I also have a MacBook, which has massive storage, but can’t be backed up to ICloud, while the ipad can backup to iCloud. My workaround for immediate file saving is to create shared files which are stored on iCloud (I call them Desktop) on the ipad. Desktop is stored on the hard drive of the MacBook and gets updated via ICloud device sharing even though I can’t initiate an iCloud backup from the MacBook.
Inside Desktop I have labeled files as usual and a parent file for graphic design from the Ipad, broken down into 100+ named project files and sub files. Whenever I save from the ipad, I save to Desktop (in iCloud) and then choose the appropriate file within Desktop to save. This way I have the folders on the hard drive of the MacBook as interim backup, and am working around not having iCloud backup storage available when I’m on the MacBook. The T7 comes in as secure and portable physical data storage.

The T7 drive is the hard copy backup of the files shared between the iPad and MacBook, I think necessary in case of some dreadful software issue, fire, or other unanticipated loss of access. I plan to have more than one as soon as I can afford it, to rotate.

Again hopefully this may help someone like me who spent some solid hours figuring out a better way to secure my data and workaround the Mac user experience.

Since I am wanted to do manual backups I needed the process to be easy so I wouldn’t avoid doing them, for obvious reasons. Though we don’t need to get into it here I don’t want to use Time Machine on my Mac to back up the disk. So I had to figure out something else.

The T7 is great, easy to use, no time at all to install, self explanatory pretty much. I dragged folders full of work from the desktop (yes I like to see them, don’t judge) to backup. The initial backup was very quick and painless, most files were a few seconds. The graphics heavy files perhaps took about 10 minutes? These are massive, not a problem, and may have been quicker than this, I expected it to take more time. (My last iCloud backup was over 13 hours of anxiety - I kid you not and have since deleted almost all the working files from the drawing app after saving them in Desktop so they happen more quickly now, but still, I thought this was a daylong project).

I experimented with dragging an old file to the trash from the T7 disk pane, and it worked as expected. I had to read online about how to go about copying my photos library (Mac) to disk, but it wasn’t hard. I have over 40,000 images, and it took about 20 minutes as I recall, if longer probably max 25. I tested the backup by remaining in the open pane and opening the photo files, which worked. Amazingly all this data barely touches the capacity of the drive, maybe 10% or less of a TB? Minuscule, anyway. 2 TB is overkill for me, especially since old files can easily be deleted.
(This may be different for a user in Time Machine because it keeps multiple versions of your backups, and maybe more settings etc. which can take up a lot of space?- not tech savvy, as I said, but I had trouble with my older system and Time Machine and being unable to delete backups which rendered my backup disk unusable, and I didn’t want to deal with this again even though it’s less convenient to do it manually).

I think the T7 drive will fail before I need more space, which is a great problem to have. I’m planning to get another disk (with less storage) and use it as a failsafe backup- ideally storing it in a safe or out of the house just in case, and keeping a rotation to protect against loss.

On the critical end, I’d love it and think it would be much safer for data if the user pane of the T7 was visibly different from the one on my desktop. It’s the same color, font, everything, as my desktop window (maybe that’s just how these things work?), which makes me triple check when I’m deleting or updating. Don’t do this on a Friday night after an adult beverage….

I’d also love it if there was a simple tutorial available when you opened the disk up, just for ease of first use, a how to (experimented with a throwaway file deleting because it wasn’t obvious that dragging files to the trash would work) for most, and as a reminder for others. I hesitate getting one for my parents because of this. But I’m happy and will buy another, looking forward to the peace of mind it gives me.

Excelente compra.
