5.0 out of 5 starsFantastic Mirrorless Camera for Enthusiasts!
Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2023
I've been using the Nikon Z5 for a few months now, and it's exceeded my expectations in every way. The image quality is outstanding, especially in low light conditions. The autofocus is lightning fast and accurate, making it a breeze to capture those spontaneous moments. The in-body stabilization is a game-changer, giving me sharp shots even with slower shutter speeds.

The ergonomic design feels comfortable in my hands, and the intuitive touchscreen interface makes navigation a breeze. I love the EVF - it's clear, bright, and provides an accurate preview of the final shot. The Z5's battery life has also been impressive, lasting through a full day of shooting without needing a recharge.

Switching from my old DSLR was seamless, thanks to the included FTZ adapter that allowed me to use my existing F-mount lenses. The Z5's compact size and lightweight build make it a great travel companion, without compromising on performance.

Overall, the Nikon Z5 is a fantastic mirrorless camera that strikes the perfect balance between affordability and high-end features. Whether you're a beginner looking to step up your photography game or a seasoned enthusiast, this camera won't disappoint. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat Entry-Level Full Frame Mirrorless, completely botched autofocus.
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2021
Pros- Outstanding color rendition. Great in camera jpg, even better raw. 2 full sized SD slots! Can accept ENEL15 batteries that have been around for about 10 years. When the AF works properly, this camera produces excellent images (see cons).

Cons- Nikon, despite having issued numerous firmware updates, still cannot get the auto focus working properly. Not even when you are using the camera outside with plenty of light. If you are taking a full length picture of a person in the shade on a sunny day the camera most of the time just won't find the person you are taking a photo of. This is in the auto af mode, with face and eye detection turned on. I exclusively take pictures of people (most are full length) and have only seen the eye detection work once (after 1000's of pictures).

I compose the shot, the AF box appears on the face of the subject (is red), the AF box goes green, I take the photo, and when I get back to look at the image in PS I get -3 times out of 10- a back focused image. What good is having a camera with a non-functional or partially functional AF? Switching to single point focusing does improve the AF, but not having the face and eye detection can be a major inconvenience.

Also bad (compared to DSLR cameras anyway) is the battery life on mirrorless. For events and weddings, you should have as many backup batteries as you are willing to carry with you - I would recommend at least 4 if shooting all day. This thing (and mirrorless in general) just eat batteries.

I can't recommend this camera until Nikon can fix the autofocus. If they release another AF improvement firmware update I will test it and update this review as necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars good, not as good as z6ii
Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2023
Style: Camera Body OnlySet: Body OnlyVerified Purchase
The Nikon Z5 is a camera that's easy to fall for, but only if you keep your expectations in check. It's like a gateway drug for the world of full-frame mirrorless photography – a step up from entry-level DSLRs, but it's not here to replace the big dogs like the Z6II.

Let's get personal. The build is solid, and it feels good in your hands. Weather-sealing gives it some toughness points, but don't plan on taking it into a hurricane.

Image quality? It's a sweet spot. The 24.3-megapixel sensor is no slouch, but it's not the resolution king. Still, your shots will pop with good detail, and it's decent in low light.

Autofocus? It's like your trusty old dog – it'll fetch the ball, but don't ask it to do backflips. Basic shooting is fine, but it won't track a speeding car like the Z6II.

Video? It's okay for family movies and YouTube, but don't expect Hollywood quality. Full HD is fine, but 4K isn't in its playbook.

Battery life? Solid. You can shoot a day away without hunting for outlets.

In a nutshell, the Nikon Z5 is your buddy for the photography journey. It's not the flashiest or the most advanced, but it's dependable. Just remember, it's not gonna give you the Z6II's magic, but hey, it's a start.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Nikon Mirrorless For All of Us
Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2020
Style: Camera Body OnlySet: Body OnlyVerified Purchase
Here's the bottom line on this model. It is the same Nikon quality you know, love, and expect at a much more attainable price point. It has dual SD UHS-II card slots, and uses the newest variation of the EN-EL15 battery from Nikon (EN-EL15c). I refuse to call it "entry-level."

So if you have been on the fence about Nikon mirrorless because of the single XQD card slot in the Z6 or Z7, this is a great way to dip your toe in the mirrorless water and even dive in if you want.

SD cards are ubiquitous and inexpensive. It has been flawless with the FTZ adapter and my F mount lenses. It does uncropped 1080p HD video, and can do cropped 4K video. I don't do much video at all, so I don't mind. 1080p is enough for me right now anyway. I am not a pro (maybe someday...). I do wish it had a little faster frames per second for stills. 4.5 is ok, but not great.

I liked the Z5 so much, I sold off my F bodies and bought a second Z5! Now I have two of these for the day I go pro as a wedding photographer! You always need a backup.

There's a lot of reviewers on the 'Tube who have been talking down to Nikon for its mirrorless efforts, but the fact of the matter is, Nikon is doing a great job in its first generation of full frame mirrorless. The Z5 (for me), Z6II, and Z7II (both unreleased at the time of this review), have everything we need. There's no reason to jump ship to another brand now. IBIS and Eye autofocus are all onboard the Nikon mirrorless cameras.

Don't get caught up in the reviews (especially outdated ones) that make it seem like everyone buying cameras is a professional wedding photographer who needs 4k video 100% of the time in one hand while photographing birds, wildlife, and sports at 20fps in the other hand, all at the same time. If that's not you, do you care if you have one card slot, or can't record in uncropped 4k? All we need is a little perspective. Find the right camera for you and go have fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeds expectations
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2024

I have been a Nikon DSLR shooter for well over a decade. I currently own the D7200(2), D600, D610, D800 and D850 and was reluctant to transition to mirrorless. I had heard a lot of negativities about the initial Nikon mirrorless cameras, which fueled my reluctance. Nikon's continued mirrorless updates encouraged me purchase the Z5. My initial expectations for this camera were more or less, middle of the road. I have owned this camera for six weeks and it has exceeded my expectations. From a physical perspective, I have large hands and generally prefer the larger body of a DSLR. From a performance perspective, I find the eye auto-focus, IBIS, customization and image quality to be better than expected. I will be using this camera primarily for still photos. The attached images were taken handheld using a Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro lens with FTZ adapter, in manual focus or Tamron 17-35mm 2.8/4 in auto-focus. Although this is considered an entry level camera, the overall features make it much more.

4.0 out of 5 stars NIKON AND AMAZON SERVICE SUPERB
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2021

PHOTOS - red marked blowup of bird in tree shows nuance, power and precision of this camera.

A superb choice and bargain for serious lovers of photographs having a wide range of skills who just don’t want their camera to get in the way, from auto to highly adjusted features. Hey, this one actually extends and enhances your possibilities. Exceptionally strong lenses, autofocus, exposure control, low light capabilities, good video, and great Nikon feel.

The Z5 is a similarly gifted but poorer member of the family, this little sister lacks some refinements and rare capabilities of its supposedly more capable ‘siblings’ Z6, 6ii, 7, and 7ii.

Added 6/30/21
UPDATE: just returned my rating to 5**** : BECAUSE NIKON and AMAZON SERVICES recently assisted me with superb service, finally updating SnapBridge, the Z5 WIFI picture transfer app, re-enabling the suddenly incompatible APPLE iOS and PVN settings in my iPad. While surprising, frustrating, and disappointingly inconvenient, causing me to initially reduce my Z5 rating to 1*, i finally discovered that such frustrating temporary iOS and other disappointing WiFi compatibility breakdowns like mine can limit the camera’s usefulness but are inevitable and common as APPLE routinely updates its iOS.

The camera itself is fine and an ongoing pleasure.

The Z5 and AMAZON TOO deserve 5***** ++ RATINGS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Identical to the Z6 in image quality
Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2020
Style: Camera Body OnlySet: Body OnlyVerified Purchase
I bought the Nikon Z5 for the soul reason for it to be my main body for weddings. I needed the dual cards. I already have the Nikon Z6 for the past 18 months and it's a phenomenal camera.
But the Z5 is a cheaper version of it and the image quality is identical in my opinion. I cannot tell the difference in low light or high ISO up to 6500. In my eyes that's amazing for $1,400. If you plan on shooting wildlife or Sports you're going to be disappointed and if you just dabble with video this Z5 will work just fine. But if you're a professional videographer or want to get into using 4K get the Z6.
The autofocus works great. Which is been very good since the last firmware update for the z6 and that is the same firmware in the Nikon Z5. In my opinion this is not a beginner camera it's going to take professional portraits and you will love it

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid feel, great value
Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2021

EVF needs a menu option to control the time the EVF is active to the time it shuts off, once you pull your eye from the viewfinder. It takes about 250ms for the EVF to register an eye (or object) is near the viewfinder to the time it turns on the viewfinder. In most cases it is just a slight annoyance, but it can hinder some shots if you're an active shooter in a dynamic setting.

Otherwise the IQ is great -- half stop improvement over my D750. The Buffer is deep. I paired it with the 3rd party grip that supports 3rd party batteries. Works well.

Taking video through the viewfinder is such a wonderful experience over using the rear panel, especially in daylight.

Having the ability to 2x zoom in to your subject through the viewfinder makes even manual focus lenses a snap.

This paired with the 50 f/1.8 S is such a solid, near-silent combo.

I doubt I will ever go back to DSLR. To the point I sold my D750.
