5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent choice for podcasters with flexibility of digital or analog connectivity
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023
A friend and I have been talking about a podcast for years, long before we even knew what to call it. We still aren't there, but close enough to begin navigating the hardware and software. I did a lot research before landing on the MV7. The MV5C was a contender and I actually tried that one first – it is a fine mic but it was a bit too bright for me. I was sorely tempted to go for the SM7B, which has a stellar reputation (and a price tag to support that reputation.) Though the SM7B is nearly twice the cost of MV7, that fact alone did not steer me away -- I learned long ago that there is a cost for quality.

In the end, my decision was based on three factors:

1. The MV7 was largely designed from the SM7B's blueprint: While the MV7 does not deliver quite the same richness as its predecessor, these two mics are very similar – honestly, given the $150 difference, they are close enough for my ears. Furthermore, Garageband with a decent audio interface should be able to compensate for any shortcomings.

2. Unlike the SM7B, the MV7 offers the flexibility of a digital (USB) or analog (XLR) connection: For me, this was a game-changer. For direct-to-computer connections, Shure provides a simple configuration app ("MOTIV") which provides some very cool configuration options (some of which are mentioned below.)

3. Variable pickup range and direct headphone monitoring: While the SM7B is amazing, it requires the user to speak directly into the mic and maintain close range. The Shure MOTIV app delivers some powerful configuration options to create presets for near and far pickup (up to 18" away). That means the mic can remain out of camera view for conference calls and still work really well. Plus, the built-in headphone monitor means you can hear yourself perfectly without the need to purchase additional hardware like an audio interface or headphone monitor.

To summarize, at $249, the MV7 has inherited enough of the pro-level quality of the SMB7 to satisfy most podcasters. In addition, the MV7 offers some unique features that "big sister" cannot provide -- notably the dual USB and XLR output options and integrated headphone monitor. Singers may prefer to spend the extra money on the SMB7 but, for spoken voice, the MV7 is an all-one-powerhouse that's hard to beat.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot nearly as good as I was expecting.
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023
I had really high hopes for this thing. Not only because of the reviews, but because of the price tag.

When I first got it, I was very happy with that. The audio sounded amazing. But a few days later, I ran into the problem of *pops* when I record. To stop these pops, I try using a pop filter. But for the pop filter to be effective, I had to move the mic away. Moving the mic away means I'm too quiet. So I had to turn up the gain. Turning up the gain introduces background noise.

So you might want to turn to the auto levels. But the auto levels also have background noise. Though I don't have my room set up for perfect studio recording, it is generally void of noise.

The final solution I came to was using 3rd party filters, and it is generally acceptable. But did not meet expectations.

Also the software for it is abysmal. You'd expect a lot more customization for something you paid 250 for. And that's without the stand

I initially got this mic and loved it. As other users have reported, the micro usb is the huge flaw. It is not set well and over the course of a few months started to fail. If the computer went to sleep or switched users, it wouldn't recognize the mic unless you unplugged and replugged from the micro usb port itself. The cable has a very hard time even fitting into the port, and I have tried several different cables to make sure that wasn't the problem. Every time I unplug it I wonder if this is the last time I will be able to use it because it is so difficult to plug back in, and when I do there is still a good chance it still won't be recognized and I have to unplug and replug yet again. Crossing my fingers this mic I bought in January can make it another week or two to black Friday so I can replace it. Shure is known for great products, but this isn't one of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars USB cable not working - no resolution
Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2023

The USB cable that came with the mic stopped working in less than a month. I just called the Shure customer service and was told they do not sell the cable separately and do not have the cable in stock!
The whole point of paying a high price for this microphone is because it works with USB. I am surprised that the company does not have a plan B for this kind of situation. When I contacted Amazon online, I was led to return the whole product - what a waste! - and I did not want that option, either.
I will stick with a USB-C cable and hope it works fine. But I am a little concerned that it might stop working at a certain point in the near future.
My point is... if you sell a good mic that works with USB, you gotta have the USB cable in stock for a warranty. What kind of warranty are you giving to customers?

1.0 out of 5 stars USB users read first!! Very poor micro USB port.

So it kind of goes without saying this microphone is supposed to be a USB version of the SM7B with some added functionality. Huge huge problem with that is that it uses micro USB for the connection. As you can see in my video I have attached to this review this port is absolutely terrible. It is not reinforced in any way, it can be wiggled and messed with to the point where you will snap it off.

If you’re planning on using it for USB mode please keep this in mind and watch how much play there is because to me this was 100% a dealbreaker.

Using it in XLR mode is fine but let’s be real you then can’t use the touch screen or software or anything this is made to use and at that point there is better mics to be had and renders over half the features useless.

If you won’t be stressing the port, moving your setup or have a stationary setup that you can wire clamp to a boom arm etc then this still might work out for you.

Side note as said in video the stock windscreen is very bad, if you plan to still purchase this do yourself a favor and get the sm7b version also sold on Amazon to go with it as it’s night and day.

All bad things aside this is the best sounding usb mic I’ve heard (comparing to yeti, yeti Nano, yeti x, quadcast, wave 1 and 3). The software is very basic but just good enough for all user levels to get a solid base setup for sound and works great. It’s really sad they didn’t use usb-c because I would love to praise this thing.

Did copious research here before selecting this mic, and really blame myself for this review, but this item DID NOT WORK out of the box. Of note:
1. This mic is SMALLER than it looks in the photos. WAY smaller than a Yeti and HyperX Quad, for example.
2. The USB is short.
3. The controls are "touch controls" and they don't respond well and are frankly totally unnecessary. They could easily have a knob and life would be much easier. I think they thought it looked cool. Meh.
4. The software is not "optional" it is mandatory. I am on a new MAC Studio with a Caldigit hub through which three other mics have worked flawlessly. This mic did not work out of the box, so if you believe in "plug and play" - good luck.
Finally, I have no doubt that Shure mics sound great WHEN THEY WORK, but this one didn't. Beware.

Do not expect reliable micro usb port design. On 2023 and USB-C wont be on this.

No vendor’s reply yet on my warranty claim!

The microphone worked, then didn't - malfunction USB won't recognize (and ZERO customer service - unreachable). Maybe they read reviews here, because they are unreachable elsewhere. I am on my 10th attempt to fix it myself, nothing works. The unit has power, lights up, but suddenly does not recognize and is therefore unusable. Shure - reach out!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this product unless you have a stand or arm. The Return/Exchange is a nightmare.

I bought this white microphone because I thought it was so beautiful.

I know it is my fault. I hoped to use a Shure 88+ tripod stand, but it doesn't fit.

So I wanted to exchange it for the black one with a tripod.

The return/exchange process is a nightmare.

In the past, Amazon has been so good at issuing almost immediate credit after the returned item is scanned, but this time is different.

It's been two weeks, and credit has not been issued yet.

While I am waiting, the price of the black one with a tripod has gone up to $269 from $242.

In terms of the audio quality, I see little difference from a Shure 88+.

I have only had this for 8 months and it's always something. No one can hear me, it won't be read by the computers (NOTE 3 different computers have the same issues with this) Can't download drivers: They are always "updated". The software made things even worst to the point I have to remove it from two computers (for testing) I'm never buying this brand again. YES, I have gone over everything I can do. I read so many forms, Reddit posts, support, and more, We have google so I use it. Still have issues and I still get nowhere with support.

Not a day goes by I don't regret buying this POS. Sound quality is terrible. Somehow Shure has figured out how to remove all the good aspects of the human voice and amplify the bass to the point of being utterly unclear. Writing this review after spending what supposed to be my recording time trying to put the mic back together, as the mounting pivot got jammed and required pliers to unstick. In that process, the entire mic came apart and I spent 20min on the floor trying to figure out how eight different washers were somehow aligned. Shure totally sucks with this mic.

I got this mic for podcasting and found it difficult to get the sound settings where I wanted them. I sent this back and went with the r0decaster pro and r0decaster mic because it was easier for me to work with. The quality of the Shure microphones are excellent but if you don't know how to adjust the sounds it can be difficult.
