5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent choice for podcasters with flexibility of digital or analog connectivity
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023
A friend and I have been talking about a podcast for years, long before we even knew what to call it. We still aren't there, but close enough to begin navigating the hardware and software. I did a lot research before landing on the MV7. The MV5C was a contender and I actually tried that one first – it is a fine mic but it was a bit too bright for me. I was sorely tempted to go for the SM7B, which has a stellar reputation (and a price tag to support that reputation.) Though the SM7B is nearly twice the cost of MV7, that fact alone did not steer me away -- I learned long ago that there is a cost for quality.

In the end, my decision was based on three factors:

1. The MV7 was largely designed from the SM7B's blueprint: While the MV7 does not deliver quite the same richness as its predecessor, these two mics are very similar – honestly, given the $150 difference, they are close enough for my ears. Furthermore, Garageband with a decent audio interface should be able to compensate for any shortcomings.

2. Unlike the SM7B, the MV7 offers the flexibility of a digital (USB) or analog (XLR) connection: For me, this was a game-changer. For direct-to-computer connections, Shure provides a simple configuration app ("MOTIV") which provides some very cool configuration options (some of which are mentioned below.)

3. Variable pickup range and direct headphone monitoring: While the SM7B is amazing, it requires the user to speak directly into the mic and maintain close range. The Shure MOTIV app delivers some powerful configuration options to create presets for near and far pickup (up to 18" away). That means the mic can remain out of camera view for conference calls and still work really well. Plus, the built-in headphone monitor means you can hear yourself perfectly without the need to purchase additional hardware like an audio interface or headphone monitor.

To summarize, at $249, the MV7 has inherited enough of the pro-level quality of the SMB7 to satisfy most podcasters. In addition, the MV7 offers some unique features that "big sister" cannot provide -- notably the dual USB and XLR output options and integrated headphone monitor. Singers may prefer to spend the extra money on the SMB7 but, for spoken voice, the MV7 is an all-one-powerhouse that's hard to beat.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot nearly as good as I was expecting.
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023
I had really high hopes for this thing. Not only because of the reviews, but because of the price tag.

When I first got it, I was very happy with that. The audio sounded amazing. But a few days later, I ran into the problem of *pops* when I record. To stop these pops, I try using a pop filter. But for the pop filter to be effective, I had to move the mic away. Moving the mic away means I'm too quiet. So I had to turn up the gain. Turning up the gain introduces background noise.

So you might want to turn to the auto levels. But the auto levels also have background noise. Though I don't have my room set up for perfect studio recording, it is generally void of noise.

The final solution I came to was using 3rd party filters, and it is generally acceptable. But did not meet expectations.

Also the software for it is abysmal. You'd expect a lot more customization for something you paid 250 for. And that's without the stand

2.0 out of 5 stars Requires constant configuration, tested with Mac, Linux, and Windows

This microphone mostly works on a Linux based laptop. I'm mostly using it a very new Lenovo T14s with 5.8 and 5.10 kernels running an Ubuntu OS (specifically Kubuntu, based on Debian). On both Windows and Linux computers I frequently have to go in and configure the playback sampling rate otherwise the pitch is very low. There's an official page on the Shure website for configuring this for Windows. The solution for Linux is long and painful.

The mic comes with two cords, a USB Micro to USB-A, and a USB Micro to USB-C. When plugged directly into either the Lenovo laptop or a MacBook Pro via USB-C adapter neither cord seems to provide the mic with sufficient power, regardless of the port it's plugged into. The telltale sign of this is that the LEDs on the mic display an alternate pattern of yellow and green, and they all slowly strobe between full brightness and off. The mic does receive enough power when plugged into an external, powered USB hub. I tried two different hubs to confirm this.

Once plugged in, the microphone and headphone jack mostly work just fine. Both of them appear in the list of supported audio interfaces with KDE (screenshot attached). I was able to use the microphone with Audacity and Discord just fine. When plugged in, KDE defaults to using the headphone jack as the default audio. I'm always able to hear myself from the mic through the headphone jack as it's mixed via the hardware.

I was able to download and install the Shure Motiv desktop software using Wine, but unfortunately, the software complains that the microphone cannot be found and thus cannot be configured. When I plug the microphone into a Windows Desktop PC and install the Motiv desktop software I'm able to properly configure the microphone. These settings appear to persist when switching back to Linux.

I'm pretty impressed with the sound of this microphone. I'd maybe take a half star off for using USB Micro instead of USB-C on the device as having this would ensure better power compatibility with laptops. I'd also prefer to see the documentation mention the low power LED pattern, which I had to infer the meaning of after much trial and error.

Update 1: I plugged this into a macOS Catalina 10.15.7 computer and it worked at first. But, I installed the Motiv software and the headphones I had plugged in made a very loud, continuous sine way noise that sounded like someone flatlined. After that the computer would completely lock up for a moment every second until I force quit Motiv. I tried running it again and the same thing happened. After that all the mic settings were cleared and the headphone port stopped working. Once I plugged it into the Windows computer again and ran Motive I was able to reconfigure it and get the headphones working again. Removing a star for this.

Update 2: Dropping this down to 3 stars. I constantly have to deal with power issues, even when using an external powered hub. When this happens Windows may detect the headphones but not the mic, which requires a bit of port juggling. It's also frustrating that the documentation doesn't list the amperage requirements. I'm also annoyed that there's no documentation on whether or not it's okay to leave it running all the time; currently I try to remember to unplug or mute it every night but worry about long term effects.

Update 3: Dropping this down to 2 stars. It's impossible for me to use the Shure MV7 with a Dell XPS 13 laptop, even with no other USB peripherals. I've tried using a 65W power supply for the laptop, which is greater than the 45W power supply it ships with. I'm even trying it through an 8.5 amp, Thunderbolt 3 dock. The same TB3 dock powers the mic just fine with my MacBook Pro. Even using a basic USB-C dock I'm able to use the mic with the same MacBook Pro, and Thinkpad laptop, but not the XPS13. Both these docks are powered docks, but all these docks seem to depend on the power provided by the host system to some degree.

Update 4: Increasing the review back up to 3 stars. The issues with the Dell XPS 13 seem to be related to drivers. Specifically, I suspect that a kernel module that is loaded for this Dell laptop conflicts with the microphone and that driver is not loaded on the Lenovo machine. Who knows, the mic might work fine on an XPS 13 laptop running Windows. The desktop computer running Windows never has power issues as long as I plug it directly into the motherboard using a USB 2.0 port.

Update 5: macOS has been having problems with the mic as of mid 2023. Notably when switching to the device it will blast static through the headphones. Fixing it requires switching between devices or a reboot.

2.0 out of 5 stars Almost Greatness...
Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2023
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
I really wanted to love this microphone... but I have a few issues with it that simply prevent me from doing so.

1. Micro-USB Port: Why? USB Type-C is the modern standard and has better strength than the Micro-USB.
2. Port Location/Direction: Again, why? Having cables come out of the back while the rotation point is just poor design. For clean cable routing, the cables have to come out of the back ports and bend 180deg to travel towards the front of the mic before going up to down to be cleanly strapped to the boom arm or mic stand. Not only is this stressing the port and cables, but it also mean anytime the mic is rotated on the Y axis, you need more or less able length, thus causing even more stress on both of them.
3. Maximum Volume via USB: The maximum volume achievable, at least on Windows 11 using the latest Shure Motiv software and firmware as of 8/1/2023 is insufficient. I use the microphone with Discord and am always asked to turn my mic volume up, despite already having it increased to 100% in Shure Motive (36db gain), Windows Recording Devices > Levels, and Discord's settings.
4. Touch Controls: While the touch controls are amazing... I often accidentally mute the mic while trying to reposition the boom arm since the touch control for mute is right next to the hinge point.
5. Hinge: While uncommon, it'd be nice to have a hinge that can swivel on the X axis too instead of having to buy additional swivel adaptors.

6. Bonus: Website/Software Download: Stop forcing data collection practices just to download the Motiv software. Obviously, I just typed bogus data to get past the form... but it's still an unnecessary nuisance.

Aside from that though, the mic has a solid construction and produces good sound quality (from what little I can hear). Sad that it appears to be only a matter of time before the port USB port breaks though.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it.
Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2020

This is Shure trying to bait people into buying what they think is a slimmed down SM7B that they see everyone using for $250. I've used a Samson CO1U (~$100) for years and then upgraded to the Rode NT-USB (~$170). I saw this mic with the voice isolation, touch controls etc and decided to try it out. I've wanted to get the SM7B for years but don't want to drop that much cash yet.

The good:
- Solid build quality for the most part. Others have commented on the thinness of the windscreen. I agree could be better but I like the sturdy metal construction.
- flexible connection options (USB / XLR)

The not so good/bad:
- pick up levels. This thing is VERY quiet. I have to crank the gain way up and that's with me sitting 2-3 inches from it. The top pick up patter is a little annoying for my setup, but I knew that going in.
- USB. I know they don't "need" USB-C for this Mic but why not have that as default. Why are we going backwards?
- Cable quality is so so.
- Not compatible with iPad Pro (USB-C). I can't plug this into my iPad when I'm remote to record? Rode NT-USB does this beautifully. Huge miss in my opinion. Not everyone is stuck to a desk and my iPad is my mini studio on the road.
- Touch controls are picky...
- This may seem like a small thing but the HUGE Shure logo on both sides is just stupid. The SM7B is slick, all black, and everyone knows what model it is. No need for me to advertise your company on my show. Bad form Shure...

Just not worth the $250 price tag. Much better mics out there for $150-200. Even decent mics for sub-$100. I'll probably return this and at some point get the SM7B setup. Disappointing.

(side note for Amazon. The rating options were for Overall, Value for money, Sheerness and Thickness? WTH?)

The pickup on this mic is terrible - even with the gain maxed out at 36 db, I was still getting < 10% volume talking at a distance of 1-2 feet from it. It also comes with no stand whatsoever. And the MOTIV software app straight up doesn’t work. At all. Just stuck on “Loading”. Even online guides that tell you to plug it into a motherboard USB port and reboot didn’t help. It’s just broken.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mic is way too quiet (aka get ready for several frustrating hours of setup)
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2023

Google "MV7 quiet" and you'll find hundreds of posts from users shocked to find out nearly impossible it is to get audible audio from this mic when using it with a USB connection - crank everything up to its highest setting and you'll still need to be one inch away for it to pick up your voice. The Shure website says it's just like that, so I guess it's a top of the line mic that only has one downside, which is that it struggles to pick up audio, which I kind of thought was the only thing a mic does but what do I know. Basically you need all volume/gain settings set 90% of the way just for it to pick you up at a conversational level. I can detect no difference in the actual audio quality from my old cheap USB mic. Definitely regret the purchase.

WHY ISNT THIS USB C??? bad micro usb connection resulting in getting blasted with white noise out of nowhere. This is one day out of the box. Being sent a replacement. If this works great, I’ll keep it. If not, I’m returning it all together. Also the touch controls on the mic are horrible. The mute button is criminally misplaced at the left edge near the pivot point making it hard to press. Mute button should be front and center.
Update: got a replacement unit, and it failed again at the same spot the micro USB connection is an absolute Achilles’ heel on this mic. I’ve had it less than a month and it already failed. Connection is weak and depending on if you move the boom little jar, the micro USB loose, killing the connection I sincerely hope they update this mic with a USB-C connection at the very least.

As far as I'm concerned, everything about this mic is perfect except one one thing, and unfortunately that one thing breaks the experience: the micro USB connection on the mic. The connection is so loose that the cable disconnects with the slightest swivel of the mic. This happens to me constantly, rendering the mic fairly useless. I'm quite surprised that there aren't more reviews mentioning this since it's a fundamental design flaw. Not sure what they were thinking here, but it's a deal breaker for me.

I pre-ordered this mic, and love the color and form factor - I wanted to love this mic so badly.

But the smell. Why create such a beautiful product and use the cheapest of the cheap foam that smells disgusting. Clearly has toxic chemicals. With my face an inch from it, I do not want to be breathing or smelling that every day.

Wish they would’ve just put a mesh metal cover

Bought Jan 15th, it is now Feb 20th and the mic isn't working. I plug it up and the lights don't come on. I had noticed that the cord seemed to be lose and not fit snuggly in the port from day one, but now it's not working at all. Sound was great for the one month, but paying $250 for something that breaks in one month is a huge rip off.

The mic arrived damaged with a chip in. You can see in the picture that it has been banged against something. You would think for this much money you are going to receive a high-quality perfect product but NO! The mini USB port on the mic's bottom is damaged too and the USB cable keeps falling off on its own.
Really disappointed and do not recommend this product and seller to anyone.
