5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent choice for podcasters with flexibility of digital or analog connectivity
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023
A friend and I have been talking about a podcast for years, long before we even knew what to call it. We still aren't there, but close enough to begin navigating the hardware and software. I did a lot research before landing on the MV7. The MV5C was a contender and I actually tried that one first – it is a fine mic but it was a bit too bright for me. I was sorely tempted to go for the SM7B, which has a stellar reputation (and a price tag to support that reputation.) Though the SM7B is nearly twice the cost of MV7, that fact alone did not steer me away -- I learned long ago that there is a cost for quality.

In the end, my decision was based on three factors:

1. The MV7 was largely designed from the SM7B's blueprint: While the MV7 does not deliver quite the same richness as its predecessor, these two mics are very similar – honestly, given the $150 difference, they are close enough for my ears. Furthermore, Garageband with a decent audio interface should be able to compensate for any shortcomings.

2. Unlike the SM7B, the MV7 offers the flexibility of a digital (USB) or analog (XLR) connection: For me, this was a game-changer. For direct-to-computer connections, Shure provides a simple configuration app ("MOTIV") which provides some very cool configuration options (some of which are mentioned below.)

3. Variable pickup range and direct headphone monitoring: While the SM7B is amazing, it requires the user to speak directly into the mic and maintain close range. The Shure MOTIV app delivers some powerful configuration options to create presets for near and far pickup (up to 18" away). That means the mic can remain out of camera view for conference calls and still work really well. Plus, the built-in headphone monitor means you can hear yourself perfectly without the need to purchase additional hardware like an audio interface or headphone monitor.

To summarize, at $249, the MV7 has inherited enough of the pro-level quality of the SMB7 to satisfy most podcasters. In addition, the MV7 offers some unique features that "big sister" cannot provide -- notably the dual USB and XLR output options and integrated headphone monitor. Singers may prefer to spend the extra money on the SMB7 but, for spoken voice, the MV7 is an all-one-powerhouse that's hard to beat.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot nearly as good as I was expecting.
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023
I had really high hopes for this thing. Not only because of the reviews, but because of the price tag.

When I first got it, I was very happy with that. The audio sounded amazing. But a few days later, I ran into the problem of *pops* when I record. To stop these pops, I try using a pop filter. But for the pop filter to be effective, I had to move the mic away. Moving the mic away means I'm too quiet. So I had to turn up the gain. Turning up the gain introduces background noise.

So you might want to turn to the auto levels. But the auto levels also have background noise. Though I don't have my room set up for perfect studio recording, it is generally void of noise.

The final solution I came to was using 3rd party filters, and it is generally acceptable. But did not meet expectations.

Also the software for it is abysmal. You'd expect a lot more customization for something you paid 250 for. And that's without the stand

3.0 out of 5 stars The USB C Breaks very easily!
Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2023
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
I was given this product for Christmas a few years ago by my parents who bought the Microphone and it barely lasted a year, maybe a year and a half, I did some research after it broke and it turns out I am not the first person to come across this problem. If you do buy this microphone I would at least not recommend using it on a Arm Stand because even though I left the USB C wire loose which I was told was the right thing to do, it broke anyways, after a while the USB C will start to come disconnected from the chip inside of the microphone until it does. Also, this is directly after the warranty expired so there wasn't really a hope of fixing it/getting it replaced unless you pay extra money to get it repaired because it said to enter my payment information on the Shure website which is reasonable but I wouldn't personally do unless I knew how much it was going to cost before hand.

But don't let anything I said scare you away from buying it I am just saying to be safe with these microphones because the USB C is honestly a terrible choice to power a microphone because they are commonly faulty in items like these and for the price it does suck that it breaks with only a year of use when you'd expect it to last way longer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty pricey for what you get.
Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2022

I bought this as a spare podcast mic or travel mic for VO (voice over). My daily microphone is the SM7B, and pitting the two against each other, I much prefer the SM7B. That's a no-brainer given the SM7B is hands down a better mic, but I was really hoping the two would be closer since a lot of the reviews I saw said they're similar. But the MV7 is too bright, and too hot than what I'm used to. I hoped it would have similar sensitivity to what my SM7B has, but oh no. I may as well travel with an NT1 based on how much reflection the MV7 picks up. In fact, I'd recommend the Rode NT1 complete studio kit (which includes its own audio interface) over the MV7. Price-wise, they're close, and you're going to get a better, more accurate sound out of the NT1 condenser than the MV7.

Ease of use? The MV7 is great. But it's more fitting for a streamer than someone hoping to get into voiceover on a budget. So it depends on your use. It's not something you're going to keep for long if you're hoping to make money on whatever you use it for.

Build quality? It's built rock-solid like most Shure mics are. But the pop filter provided slides off easily and it uses Micro USB... Which is like, one bump away from bent.

Value? It's gonna be a no for me, dawg. I'd say either save up for the Shure SM7B or see if Amazon has a used Rode NT1 with Ai1 Complete Studio Kit when you're shopping.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shines when it's next to your mouth - but mind the USB connector
Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2022

When you see podcasters with these next to their mouth it's not a hip, cool thing, to do. This mic shines when is it up next to your mouth. It can definitely capture audio from a foot to a foot and a half away but then you're hearing the room acoustics.

*UPDATE*
After a month of using this, it is apparent that the use of a micro usb connector was a poor choice. Even with a very loose wrap of the cord on my boom, I have found the connector either comes out , which is a good thing, or worst case its bent in a bad way. The cable side of the provided cord has permanently bent at this point. I am going to buy a magnetic micro-usb connector like: https://www.amazon.com/NetDot-Magnetic-Converter-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B07MT3YJJG (Not in any way an endorsement of that product, in fact it has mediocre reviews but I'm not going to be hammering on the connector like cell phone use would do). I figure it's $8 well spent, but Sure should include some similar solution in the box because it is on a pivot mount and such issues are bound to happen with the current design. I almost think a USB A style connector would have been a more rugged choice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Did I get a lemon?

I had high expectations for Shure and this mic specifically. After using the Audiotechnica ATR2100X for several years, I decided to upgrade. Everything about this mic appears professional. Although a notch below the SM7B, it doesn't require special equipment.

After using it for over 100 hours, testing and tweaking all the settings, and comparing back to my cheap (<$100) ATR, the ATR still sounds better. I even tried replacing the foam windscreen (which didn't help).

I don't know if I got a bad unit. It just hasn't lived up to the hype and other reviews.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great mic with fantastic sound quality, but the VERY important mute button is worthless
Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2022

Sounds and functions great, but the mute button is a touch pad (not a physical button) on the back of the mic. So on top of having no tactile feel and no way of knowing if you've activated the muting, it's on the back side of the mic, so you can't see the LED light to see if you're muted or not. Really? Horrible design! Would have been five stars if it weren't for this critical feature that it lacks. I've been a guest on dozens of podcasts, and you REALLY need that button in case there is background noise or you need to cough. Shure needs to fix this pronto.

It picks up sound from everywhere. Even if you’re sitting in a chair and it cracks for example. It’s extremely sensitive. Definitely meant for a booth. I was trying to record an ACX but it picked up the voices in the unit next to me. Smh. Lol.

The microphone is just as stated. Great sound and versatility. Only problem with mine is the USB connection. It is a poor fit. The cord is loose at the connection and falls out when touched. I bought the protection but use the mic everyday and don't have a back up. Do I want to wait weeks to send it back for a replacement? Can't lose the stream time. So mixed review...great but.
