5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent choice for podcasters with flexibility of digital or analog connectivity
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023
A friend and I have been talking about a podcast for years, long before we even knew what to call it. We still aren't there, but close enough to begin navigating the hardware and software. I did a lot research before landing on the MV7. The MV5C was a contender and I actually tried that one first – it is a fine mic but it was a bit too bright for me. I was sorely tempted to go for the SM7B, which has a stellar reputation (and a price tag to support that reputation.) Though the SM7B is nearly twice the cost of MV7, that fact alone did not steer me away -- I learned long ago that there is a cost for quality.

In the end, my decision was based on three factors:

1. The MV7 was largely designed from the SM7B's blueprint: While the MV7 does not deliver quite the same richness as its predecessor, these two mics are very similar – honestly, given the $150 difference, they are close enough for my ears. Furthermore, Garageband with a decent audio interface should be able to compensate for any shortcomings.

2. Unlike the SM7B, the MV7 offers the flexibility of a digital (USB) or analog (XLR) connection: For me, this was a game-changer. For direct-to-computer connections, Shure provides a simple configuration app ("MOTIV") which provides some very cool configuration options (some of which are mentioned below.)

3. Variable pickup range and direct headphone monitoring: While the SM7B is amazing, it requires the user to speak directly into the mic and maintain close range. The Shure MOTIV app delivers some powerful configuration options to create presets for near and far pickup (up to 18" away). That means the mic can remain out of camera view for conference calls and still work really well. Plus, the built-in headphone monitor means you can hear yourself perfectly without the need to purchase additional hardware like an audio interface or headphone monitor.

To summarize, at $249, the MV7 has inherited enough of the pro-level quality of the SMB7 to satisfy most podcasters. In addition, the MV7 offers some unique features that "big sister" cannot provide -- notably the dual USB and XLR output options and integrated headphone monitor. Singers may prefer to spend the extra money on the SMB7 but, for spoken voice, the MV7 is an all-one-powerhouse that's hard to beat.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot nearly as good as I was expecting.
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023
I had really high hopes for this thing. Not only because of the reviews, but because of the price tag.

When I first got it, I was very happy with that. The audio sounded amazing. But a few days later, I ran into the problem of *pops* when I record. To stop these pops, I try using a pop filter. But for the pop filter to be effective, I had to move the mic away. Moving the mic away means I'm too quiet. So I had to turn up the gain. Turning up the gain introduces background noise.

So you might want to turn to the auto levels. But the auto levels also have background noise. Though I don't have my room set up for perfect studio recording, it is generally void of noise.

The final solution I came to was using 3rd party filters, and it is generally acceptable. But did not meet expectations.

Also the software for it is abysmal. You'd expect a lot more customization for something you paid 250 for. And that's without the stand

4.0 out of 5 stars Unparalleled Sound Quality and a Touch of Luxury: My Shure MV7 Experience
Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2023
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
Let me start by saying that the Shure MV7 USB Microphone has been an absolute game-changer for me. As a passionate podcaster, I am constantly seeking ways to elevate the quality of my recordings and create a premium experience for my listeners. The MV7 has proven to be the perfect companion on this journey, delivering exceptional sound quality and a touch of luxury that sets it apart.

From the moment I first used the MV7, I was blown away by its sound reproduction capabilities. It captures my voice with such clarity and precision that I can't help but feel like a professional broadcaster. Every word is crisp, every nuance is captured, and the result is a recording that sounds polished and professional.

Not only does the MV7 excel in performance, but it also adds a touch of elegance to my podcasting setup. The sleek, all-metal design exudes a sense of luxury that instantly elevates the aesthetic of my recording space. It's a microphone that not only sounds amazing but looks the part too, creating a visually pleasing environment that enhances my overall podcasting experience.

Now, I must admit that there is one minor drawback I've encountered—the included pop filter. While it does a decent job of reducing plosive sounds, I found that it falls short of my expectations. The harsh pops caused by strong puffs of air still managed to find their way into my recordings. To address this, I plan to invest in a higher-quality pop filter to further enhance the audio quality and eliminate those pesky plosives once and for all.

Despite this minor inconvenience, the Shure MV7 has truly transformed my podcasting journey. It has allowed me to create content that stands out, capturing the attention of my audience with its unparalleled sound quality. The investment in this microphone, although considered a luxury due to its price, has proven to be worth every penny. It provides a premium look and performance that rivals even the renowned Shure SMB7, while offering a more budget-friendly option for podcasters seeking top-tier sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars The price & the stock windscreen are this item's weakpoints
Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2021
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
Pros:
-Sound quality is top-notch via USB connection
-Sound quality 'can' be even better if you use this mic via XLR connected to a decent audio interface, and you know how to set up a digital EQ properly
-Option to have an XLR or USB on this mic makes it versatile
-If you should go strictly via the USB connection, this is one of the best USB mics (for spoken word) I've ever used

Cons:
-The PRICE. I think this is a $200 mic. I think $250 is stretching it a bit but I think the marketing of "influenced by the SM7B" kinda gives the company an excuse to hike up the price
-The stock windscreen that comes with this $250 mic is awful. Buy a replacement one that fits an SM7B immediately. That windscreen will resolve most of the plosive issues that the stock windscreen is unable to prevent
-Micro USB connection? Why? The durability of micro USB cables aren't exactly great ( at least, with the ones that I've owned and I've owned a ton of them)
-This is not for people who are not as interested in going down the XLR rabbit hole side of things. Should you stick strictly with the USB setting, there are far better (and cheaper) USB-only mic alternatives out there.
-If you intend to stick strictly with XLR on this mic, probably best to get a cheaper alternative out there that is strictly an XLR mic. The audio via XLR on this mic is good, but not as good as cheaper mics out there that are strictly XLR.

Bottom Line: The best of both worlds on a mic (USB and XLR) does come in handy. If I need to work and just want to plug in a mic that doesn't make my voice sound like trash, the USB connection on the MV7 is awesome. Should I decide to do some voiceover and add some filters and EQ my voice, that's where the XLR comes in handy. Before buying this mic, decide if you absolutely must have that future option to go XLR. If you do not, definitely save your money and go with decent USB only mics out there.

Update - 04.05.2021: After owning this mic for only a week, I noticed some rattling sound from inside the microphone. I called up Shure to ask what that weird sound was. It sounds like a loose screw from inside mic. The rep told me that the capsule is loose and this is common after the foam that keeps the capsules in place deteriorate. I was like "Deteriorate? I've only had this mic for 1 week!" That's when the Shure rep said that I should RMA the mic and get replacement. I was shocked. I'm sure I'm one of the few unlucky ones but I was shocked. Simply by swinging the mic towards me on my boom arm, I heard something loose and said to myself "This doesn't sound good. I'm not sure it's supposed to sound like that." I'm hoping my replacement doesn't have the same issue

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but not an SM7B replacement. Look elsewhere if you're using XLR only.
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2020

This microphone fits perfectly for my use case, and that is the key to making your decision... USE CASE!

If you're looking for SM7B quality XLR, this ain't it. The audio difference between XLR and USB mode is essentially zero. This makes it a killer USB microphone, but a very limited XLR microphone.

The software functioned perfectly and works as expected. I had an issues with audio playback through the headphone jack, however that was my fault as I had set the Hz rate to the wrong value in my PC settings. It took a call to support to identify that. The software limiter also does a poor job since it doesn't prevent clipping, but just processes the audio after the fact. It's digital, not analog.

The biggest issue this mic has is PLOSIVES. P sounds are TERRIBLE. It makes this mic sound extremely cheap. The provided wind screen is thinnest at the top where you talk into it, about 1/8 of an inch of foam before it reaches the capsule. Feels like it'll rip one day it's so thin. This makes is unusable without an additional pop filter. This is a big downside and one of the reasons I considered returning it. However, I managed to jerry rig another mini pop shield onto it and it's good enough to avoid the hassle of a return. This alone makes the price tag of $250 wayyy too high. You're almost better off getting a Rode Podmic and an XLR interface for that same price. You also have to get very close to the mic... I have the volume MAXED out and it's still fairly quiet even from only a couple inches away. Big change from my Yeti that could hear me from across the room. This is mainly due to this being a dynamic mic and not a condenser mic, but it's still quiet overall with few options to go any louder.

The build quality is fantastic, and the lights on the touchscreen make it look pretty unique. The SHURE logo on the sides is a bit of an eye-sore since it's massive. The microphone is exactly 6 inches long, metal construction, much smaller than a Blue Yeti (which I like). The "squished" look compared to the SM7B has grown on me to the point where the SM7B looks hilariously long.

NOTE: Shure sent out a lot of these to YouTubers to review, however they requested they NOT post their reviews if they didn't like the product. So most day-one reviews you're seeing is from people that liked it. I'm here to tell you that it's not an SM7B killer like so many titles suggest, but it is the best USB microphone I've seen yet.

CONCLUSION: This microphone falls in a very specific sweet spot... for those that want an XLR quality USB mic, but don't want to spend a couple hundred more for a full SM7B setup. If you're planning on doing XLR only, then keep shopping. There are better XLR-only options out there.

If the price drops to $175, get it.

the mic itself is great, but the foam doesn't match the quality of it. I had to put another foam ( Shure A7WS ) to get the best that the microphone can offer.

Overall I am pleased with this, had to reverse brackets for tailored install but not an issue. What pisses me off is that some of the features are only accessible through the app. The reason that’s an issue is because I read the “Terms and Conditions “. Seems more like a privacy scam than a service. Aside from that it’s a good mic.

4.0 out of 5 stars It’s NOT an SM7b (hot gritty podcasting sound, worthless pop filter)
Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2022

First I’ll just say that I’ve been recording for 30 years, and have both the MV7 and SM7b in my studio. Here are a few things audio people might want to know…

The mic works great for video meetings (Zoom, etc); I definitely sound better than everyone now! I just plug it into my iPad Pro’s USB C and use a pair of cheap white Apple wired earbuds. I don’t consider it a real studio mic though; it’s definitely a “prosumer” computer mic.

Overall the sound acceptable, but it’s NOT an SM7b in its character. The SM7b is smooth and full, and requires basically zero EQ, while the MV7 is obviously mid-range hyped. It’s a gritty/hairy aggressive type of sound, and there’s no way to change this character. I’ve tried recording using the XLR and it’s the same as the USB. Bringing up the highs (7kHz+ shelf) and giving it a low bump (100Hz bell) helps balance out the hot upper midrange, but it still has that crunchy character.

The pop screen is worthless. You’re going to get pops all over the place, and the mic is unusable the way it is sold, for any serious close work, because of this. You absolutely must buy the pop screen for the SM7b (there are many YouTubes on this problem). It fits fine, then the problem is fixed. Never any pop problem at all, ever, when using the good screen (which Sure should have included). See photo, it’s just a bit longer, doesn’t snap on tight but that’s not a problem, looks good.

Also, the app that controls some advanced settings does not work on iPad Pro. I plug the mic into my iMac to access those, although after playing around extensively I have all settings (compressor, limiter, auto mode) set to off.

Good as a USB mic, for those who want a step above the crowd.

The output volume is very low on this mic and the 3m USB-A cable falls out constantly and does not work the 3m USB-c seems to work. Also if you buy the set they don't tell you that it only has XLR in the boom arm so if you want to use USB it's not going to work.

Great quality of sound for the money!

The microusb wire got broken in 2 uses, then after replacing the wire with a new one, the microUSB port got broken immediately and turned my $250 into nothing. All I had to do is to move the microphone up and down a few times. Thanks to Amazon Support, the device was replaced in no time!

So, 5 stars for the quality of sound and customer service.
-1 star for the weak microusb port. Btw, it seems like the manufacturer is well aware of the issue, that's why they send you two USB wires in case one of them breaks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice hardware, software blows
Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2023

This is a really nice microphone, five star worthy. I chose this particular mic because it has both the USB and XLR connection options. The sound quality and overall build of the product itself is top notch. It seems though, that the nicer to nicest hardware makers also have the most craptastic software. The UI is barren and not inviting to the user. And I get that if you’re gonna use a nice mic, you’re gonna lay out the cash for a nice mixer or similar interface to use it with. It’s just that these company touts it’s software as the best way to get great performance out of the mic. That’s simply not true. Their software is two stars worthy, at best.

So, would I recommend Shure mics? Absolutely. Would I recommend their software? Um, no.
