even after I eject it, sometimes it still corrupts itself on a Mac

This worked perfectly for me when I was using the windows laptop. However, since only my MacBook, I have not been able to use this hard drive at all as half the time, even when I eject it corrupts. The only way to fix this on the Mac is by plugging it in and just waiting. At least that's all I could find. However, I find that I have to take the drive when I unplug it from my Mac and make sure it's not correct by plugging it into my windows and if it is corrupt, fix, fixing it on my windows, as this is the quickest. but it will play video games full speed, it will have all your pictures in your videos and they will load relatively fast. If you're expecting blazing speed, this is not a lightning port drive, lightning port drives cap out at 40 Mb a second this does not.

This is one of the nicest portable drives I've used. It's a little pricey, but has the speed and (hopefully) durability to make it worthwhile. It feels like the build-quality is solid. I like the hook option. Also the matte finish on one side so it doesn't slide off a table easily. Great design. And looks high-end when working at the client's office.

Good value but finicky on Mac

This drive is fast and a good value, but after 6 months, I can say that it's rather finicky on a Mac. So I'm reducing my rating to 4 stars.

My first issue was that the drive became unrecognizable on my MacBook Pro M1. The Mac couldn't see the drive in Disk Utility or give any sign that the drive existed at all. Even more bizarre, when I plugged it into three other Macs, it worked fine. Eventually, I figured out that it was because I wasn't using the original cable that came with it, which I think is perhaps a lightning cable or something, which apparently my MacBook Pro M1 really wanted. But to work on 3 other macs just fine with a regular USB-C cable? Bizarre. So there was quirk number one.

Later on, when encrypting the drive, I either unplugged it too soon, or the operating system didn't unmount it properly, and the drive became corrupted and this time, though showing up in DiskUtility, couldn't be formatted or partitioned without failing with a strange error each time. Others on the internet who had this issue said they ultimately had to return the drive for a new one. I was about to return mine too, but then as a last-ditch effort, I borrowed a Windows 11 machine, which recognized the drive no problem. So I re-partitioned it there, and then brought it back to my Mac, where Disk Utility was happy to deal with it again.

The third quirk is that often, my Mac refuses to eject the drive. Ventura, and Sonoma before it, almost always says the drive is in use, even when every program is closed. Spotlight isn't indexing it. Maybe it's because I have my primary Photos Library on it and it's doing something in the background? But it's not obvious, and I have to shut-down my computer almost every time to eject this disk. I'll have to put more time into researching active processes to see what the deal is, but I just don't have this issue with my other external drives. So again, Sandisk and Apple need to coordinate on this.

So while I'd love to give this drive five stars, all these quirks on the Mac have wasted a lot of my time. And SanDisk (Western Digital) needs to really take a look at some of the compatibility issues with Mac and update the firmware / drivers on this.

Perfect for what I needed

I personally got the 2TB variation and it is exactly what I was looking for.

My plan for the storage device is to act as somewhat of a Doomsday type backup. In the event of something happening, I wanted to have a last resort backup of all my data that I can keep in my every day carry bag (and as part of following good data backup practices. If you aren't already, I recommend following the 3-2-1 rule of data storage). Because of this, I was looking for 4 things.

The first two things I was looking for was portability and capacity. This device fits both of those for me. It is 2 TBs in the size of roughly a credit card. Makes it super easy to backup to and leave in my backpack. The size the device itself is a huge selling point for me since my bag is constantly packed with work/personal tech items since I work in IT/Networking/Penetration Testing. I also really appreciated how the device came with a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter. It may seem like a small and insignificant thing, but makes it easier for all users regardless of their computer's IO setup.

The third thing I was looking for was its ease of use across platforms (mainly Mac and Windows/Linux). When I looked at reviews for this device previously, I had noticed a few reviews saying that they ran into issues with using it for storage on both Mac and Windows. This is big for me since I use a Mac for work and my personal laptop. Then I use a Windows desktop at home. Because of this, I naturally will use the device as a backup for both OS's. However, this was not an issue for me. So far, it has worked perfectly well for loading files on both OS's.

The fourth thing I was looking for when selecting a product was security and encryption. Because of my jobs, I am very self conscious of data security. This is especially so for my last resort backup since I keep it in my bag that I carry everywhere. The encryption was super easy to setup. It would be nice if they didn't cap the encryption key to 25 characters, but that is fine. I popped the device into my desktop and opened the encryption setup and was all set within a minute. I didn't have any issues with unlocking the device when using either OS. The device has a small program for both Mac and Windows (I haven't tried it on a Linux machine yet but i assume it would be fine on there) that you launch on your respective device and it opens a tab to input the key.

Overall, I would definitely highly recommend this product. Only caveat I would have is its standard price (especially for the 2TB variant). I was able to get it at a considerable discount during Prime Day. If you are budget minded/looking for a deal and don't need this type of storage solution right away, I would probably recommend waiting for it to be cheaper. But if you have a need right now that this device fits, then go for it.

Naturally, I have yet to see how it holds up over time. Since it is an SSD, I don't expect it to die on me anytime soon but that can occasionally happen. TBD on that one.

Load speed was pretty good. Given the numbers of files, it took a 500GB hardrive about 15 minutes to be loaded onto this device.

Frequently ejects on macOS

I really like this drive, but like a lot of other people, I’ve been having issues with the drive frequently ejecting on macOS.

I bought the drive to do Time Machine backups, but it would always eject when plugged into my MacBook Pro. I ended up using the drive with a Raspberry Pi and doing Time Machine backups over SMB, which is a lot slower than plugging the drive directly into the Mac, but it’s been pretty reliable so far on the Pi.

I only took off one star because I’m not sure if the issue is with the drive or macOS. It seems like a lot of external SSDs have this issue with Macs, actually.

I'd prefer the new model, but still nice

When I ordered this drive I thought I was ordering the new model, which I'd previously purchased a short time before - but this one arrived and I decided to keep it and use it anyway. I guess I was in too much of a hurry to order.

Size and shape-wise it's almost the same as the 2023 model - small and sleek. This 2022 version is just barely larger and comes with the hole in it rather than the "tag" on the side which the latest model moved to using.

Otherwise the drives are equally spacious (I got the 2 terabyte versions) in a very convenient small package. My purpose for both is for travel - and this is the best travel hard drive that I've found in a quality brand name product that I trust (SanDisk is owned by Western Digital, so I know it's a good company).

I've always used Seagate portable drives, which have never failed me and I thought were very portable. These SanDisk SSD drives take that another step smaller! I really appreciate the fact that I can put these new drives in my pocket and take them anywhere. For travel I haven't seen anything better!

Personally, I use VeraCrypt for encryption so I cannot tell you about the software that comes pre-loaded on these drives. I reformat them and start over anyway.

The great thing is that you can plug and play using these drives for connecting to a phone (in my case a Galaxy Note 20), so you can drag and drop back and forth with pictures, videos or whatever files you want. That alone is a reason to purchase for me.

I'll be using them as an external hard drive for both computing and for phones.

I'm not sure about long-term use, as I just purchased them but I'll try to do an update later once I've used them for a while.
