Good value capture card with minor issue

For what it is this is a pretty decent capture card. The only issue that I have with it currently is the fact that it stops recording on occasion and it took me several hours of searching to find out that part of the reason it does is due to low power. Like the capture card is still on and working but it's not capturing video if it's not plugged into USB 3.0. even using a USB hub that is 3.0 itself and independently powered does not seem to work unless it's plugged directly into the 3.0 ports on the computer. So occasionally I have to unplug and replug the capture card. Resetting it doesn't work it has to be power cycled. I use streamlabs obs and it's possible that it's an issue with streamlabs but I don't think it worked any better with twitch studio. Even when switching games, or themes it requires a power cycle to properly record.

So, I Stream To Twitch..I've used a single PC setup for years. I Recently wanted to try and up the quality of my streams and have redone most of my hardware to complete my goal. I also wanted to remove some strain from my rtx 2070 super so my games ran more smooth at a higher FPS while streaming, So I setup a second pc and began looking for a not to pricey but reliable name capture card. That is when I found the EVGA XR1, On the surface this is an amazing deal 4k passthrough, 1080p60fps capture, obs certified plug and go type setup and I'm all for easy plug and go.

I received this item in the mail set it up got it running and began toying with it and getting all my stuff setup to use it the same night it came in, And then I noticed this weird outline on everything that was being displayed by the capture card, I started doing advanced setup in obs testing different Video Format, Color Space, Color Range...to no avail some of these options actually made it worse, I then used the option in obs for cameras/capture devices to deactivate and reactive the capture card, effectively turning it off and turning it on again. That Some what helped but the outline is still there...I'm not sure if this is because the item is defective or damaged or what is the cause of this issue. I have contacted EVGA to inquire about this I attached the same image and video here as I sent to evga to show the issue and see what can be done. I would say this item is a steal at this price point but with the issues I'm having with it and the lack of any information at all about this item aside a few reviewers talking about it on youtube, I can't even think to recommend anyone buy this product. I will update this review if EVGA gets back to me and I find out if i have a defective item or if this is just how this card works.

***Edit***

After contact EVGA sending photos and videos first response was they couldnt see what I was talking about but it was clear on screen second email to them circling the issue in question was found the item was doa and artifacting, they have processed my rma for a new unit. I will update the review once more when the new one arrives.

If u are not familiar with capture cards I would recommend to pass on this. It may look cool and may read it’s awesome. But personal experience I had issues from day 1. My screen would go black and my capture card would lose connection randomly and I would have to unplug everything and plug it back in just for it to work for 30 mins. The audio was dim. Even with the audio setting all the way up. I had to wear ear buds and wireless headphones over then just to get game audio and voice chat to work. I worked on it for 2 weeks and had no solutions. I returned the product 1 month ago and still no refund.
I couldn’t find any help online for set up tutorial and audio issues so it could have been just me. I tried it didn’t like it. Now on to better things.

Every other review had problems, but I thought maybe I could make it work. Alas, absolutely no chance this thing works.

I wanted this for capturing my iPad Pro, because it was one of the only capture cards with a direct audio line-out so I could plug in headphones and actually hear the iPad. But, I get a picture for a brief second before getting a black screen in OBS. I tried different USB cables, different USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling the device, and anything I can think of.

My guess is that this <$100 version of the XR1 is a fake, and the original ~$200 is the true XR1 that works. That’s just a guess though.

So yeah, don’t bother with this one and keep looking!

Doesnt work for Destiny 2 on PS5

I tried it mainly for destiny 2 on PS5, but on 120hz mode in 1080p the game in 1080p game becomes unplayable, normal 60hz works fine but so does any other capture card, not worth the money if you are trying to capture from a PS5 at high frame rates. And yes for anyone wondering, i did turn off HDCP 2.3.

Interface works well with OBS but it's so cheaply made. They also incorporated this "gamer-friendly" multi-function knob that controls everything, except it is really hard to tell what things are set at such as volume, etc. People who work in professional audio and video want clear controls for settings and levels - this is bad design, even for the consumer market.

There is NO passthrough at 1440p. Enabling "advanced passthrough" mode disables the capture card.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if you want 1440p passthrough. It is a LIE!
