How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsNice incremental upgrade to the Z7-1 at an attractive lower initial base price...
Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2021
Been a Z-7 owner since first release. Also own Canon 5DS-R, 5DMKII.
Generally Why Z7-line?
- A+ still image quality (I shoot RAW and edit in Photoshop)
- A+ ergonomics & best menus in business (not perfect, but pretty great)
- Assignable buttons = fantastic
- View finder and rear screen are A+
- Silent/stealth operation is perfect.
- Z lenses and N-Z adapter = phenomenal optics. Currently using all favorite Z, G, Zeiss, Sony E, Canon EOS, SIRUI anamorphic lenses no problem. Cannon lenses via slightly temperamental/flawed Techart EF>Z adapter (will not work in pure MF mode!).

Why to upgrade to Z7-II?
- Faster in-camera computing (2nd processor), generally snappier operation, faster, more accurate auto focus.
- Better video (up to 4k 60p 10 bit in cam)
- Slightly longer lasting batteries (but will NOT work with Z7-1 batteries), even though the new batts will charge in the old charger.
- 2 card slots - but not 2 slots of the same kind...a slightly annoying, but also interesting pair of XQD/CFEx & SD. So if using CFEx, second card will always be much slower...This design choice was a compromise...give new shooters option to run faster CFEx cards for high end video and raw bursts, retain XQD compatibility, provide SD option as primary or backup because it's smaller and fits. Future will be two CFEx/XQD slots or two of some new smaller version of the CFEx.

Negatives:
- Still no Z pancake 24mm 1.4 that would make this the ultimate "beyond film Leica M" stealth travel cam. BTW: the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Ultra-Compact is fantastic at 16mm...and no-brainer inexpensive...but only DX rez. If you need stealth, that is the way to get it currently. Just carry the Z 24mm 1.8 in your pocket/pack for high rez full frame shots.
- Wish all Z lenses had an assignable ring controller (like the kit 24-70) that can be mapped to F stop. F-stop control should ALWAYS be on the lens, PERIOD!!!
- Why are all the native Z lenses about the same length as the G's + FTZ adapter? Seems like there are actually ZERO native Z lenses yet. They should be 1" shorter.

3.0 out of 5 starsAmazing Camera

I received this Z7II yesterday and immediately put it through its paces.
There seems to be nothing left out in this camera. So why only three stars?
Nikon has made the documentation only available to download off their
website. I cannot print a page out of the PDF file for some sort of strange
reasoning on the part of Nikon's engineers. Once I got the camera I would not
send it back I like it so much. Had I know how difficult it would be to use the documentation
though I likely would not have purchased another Nikon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2021
Set: w/ 24-70mm lensStyle: Camera Only
I was very excited to get this camera and hop into mirrorless.
I've been using Nikon for about 12 years: Loved my D3000, 3200, 7000, 7100, D800, D810 but this was the first nikon camera I sent back.

Part of it was just the circumstances. ALL of my F Mount gear has depreciated to the point that I can only get a fraction of the cost, so buying into mirrorless would cost over 9k to get the same type of lenses I currently have. So my standards for this camera were VERY high. Another problem is that I've been accustomed to a certain feel of nikon cameras, and this one just doesn't meet those standards.

Instantly, when I grabbed this camera, I liked how light it was but I quickly realized how many important compromises needed to be made to get into a lower body. There are fewer buttons which means no dedicated buttons for WB, no dials for shooting mode, now quality buttons. These aren't really deal breakers but I feel like I'm really taking a step back to the days of the 3000 series where you had less access to settings on the body. I could get used to it, but I don't want to for 3300.

Then there are the ergonomics. People say they are better than Sony, Cannon and Fuji mirrorless but I've grown used to everything feeling fluid and natural on my body. On this camera, setting a toggleable setting like WB to one of the customized buttons to the right of the sensor and rotating the dial on the front of the camera just feels awkward. Also, the front dial button just doesn't feel robust like that of the D810 and the arrow pad also feels spongy.

Again, I'm not saying these are deal breakers, but I don't want to re-invest 9k into a new system with a body that I simply do not like. The FTX adapter works well, but it also adds at least an inch to the length of your lenses. For something like a prime, it feels fine but for a 24-70 f2.8? You're probably gonna want to get the Z mount lens, which are very expensive as well.

Long story short, the camera that you are getting for over 3000$ is no wear near the quality that I was expecting. When I paid that for the D810, I knew "yes, this is what you are paying for" just by holding the camera. This feels more like a 1500$ camera. If I could get into the this camera and a 2.8 for 3 to 3.5k, It'd be a slam dunk but for this price, I'm going to pass.

Autofocus just wan't impressive in the slightest, but I'm already used to that with the D810. However, having amazing autofocus might have tipped the scales to give this camera more of a chance.

The electronic view finder is nice. I would have really loved to stick with this camera and be done with the limitations of a optical view finder, but I see now that the advantages to the mirrorless might not actually outweigh the advantages to a DSLR system that I already own.

I'm not saying this is a bad camera and I haven't compared it to other mirrorless systems. I can only say that I wasn't impressed and, for the price of the body and the lenses with what seems like a drop in Nikon quality, I just don't see it as worth it anymore. I think Nikon has been making a lot of bad moves over the past few years and I'm really losing confidence in investing so much money into them.

Mirrorless IS the future and I would love to jump in, Sadly for the cost of entry to the quality of the product I think I'm going to return this and stick with my DSLR until it's no longer working, but by then will Nikon even still be around?
