How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsNice incremental upgrade to the Z7-1 at an attractive lower initial base price...
Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2021
Been a Z-7 owner since first release. Also own Canon 5DS-R, 5DMKII.
Generally Why Z7-line?
- A+ still image quality (I shoot RAW and edit in Photoshop)
- A+ ergonomics & best menus in business (not perfect, but pretty great)
- Assignable buttons = fantastic
- View finder and rear screen are A+
- Silent/stealth operation is perfect.
- Z lenses and N-Z adapter = phenomenal optics. Currently using all favorite Z, G, Zeiss, Sony E, Canon EOS, SIRUI anamorphic lenses no problem. Cannon lenses via slightly temperamental/flawed Techart EF>Z adapter (will not work in pure MF mode!).

Why to upgrade to Z7-II?
- Faster in-camera computing (2nd processor), generally snappier operation, faster, more accurate auto focus.
- Better video (up to 4k 60p 10 bit in cam)
- Slightly longer lasting batteries (but will NOT work with Z7-1 batteries), even though the new batts will charge in the old charger.
- 2 card slots - but not 2 slots of the same kind...a slightly annoying, but also interesting pair of XQD/CFEx & SD. So if using CFEx, second card will always be much slower...This design choice was a compromise...give new shooters option to run faster CFEx cards for high end video and raw bursts, retain XQD compatibility, provide SD option as primary or backup because it's smaller and fits. Future will be two CFEx/XQD slots or two of some new smaller version of the CFEx.

Negatives:
- Still no Z pancake 24mm 1.4 that would make this the ultimate "beyond film Leica M" stealth travel cam. BTW: the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Ultra-Compact is fantastic at 16mm...and no-brainer inexpensive...but only DX rez. If you need stealth, that is the way to get it currently. Just carry the Z 24mm 1.8 in your pocket/pack for high rez full frame shots.
- Wish all Z lenses had an assignable ring controller (like the kit 24-70) that can be mapped to F stop. F-stop control should ALWAYS be on the lens, PERIOD!!!
- Why are all the native Z lenses about the same length as the G's + FTZ adapter? Seems like there are actually ZERO native Z lenses yet. They should be 1" shorter.

3.0 out of 5 starsAmazing Camera
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2021
I received this Z7II yesterday and immediately put it through its paces.
There seems to be nothing left out in this camera. So why only three stars?
Nikon has made the documentation only available to download off their
website. I cannot print a page out of the PDF file for some sort of strange
reasoning on the part of Nikon's engineers. Once I got the camera I would not
send it back I like it so much. Had I know how difficult it would be to use the documentation
though I likely would not have purchased another Nikon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marginal upgrade to the Z7

The Z7II features a bit snappier auto focus and some changes to the menu. I am keeping my Z7 as a backup body and retiring my Z50. I am happy with this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent landscapes. Good at everything else.

Probably the best of the mirrorless full frames for landscapes as of mid-2021. AF tricks lag behind competitors at the moment, but it’s just software, so improvements are to be expected.

4.0 out of 5 stars good solid camera

Set: BodyStyle: Camera Only
I upgraded from the OG z6, which i bought on launch. So almost 3 years later, I decided to upgrade. Usually 3 years is when I trade up to a newer model since you still get some sale value.

Why I upgraded from the z6.
1. AF, while I didn't have too many issues with the z6 AF, I use the touch screen a lot if the camera backfocus. I did some bird in flight and the z6 was ok, I might say the d750 might be a tad snappier in general. I read the z7ii had improved AF (z6ii is better), hard to tell, but it seems to be snapper. more test is need.
2. it isn't 24mp. My last 4 workhorse cameras were all same Sony 24mp sensor found on the D600, A7, D750 and than Z6 (has BSI, which is better). Higher mp for detail in landscape and portrait.
3, a battery grip for portrait. I really missed this, Sadly the battery grip reverted to the older generation design layout. The d750 battery grip was a better design and more convenient to take on and off.

Good
+ higher MP is better detail. have tested too many shot nor have a z6 to compare. But I notice it makes things a tad sharper.
+af seem good, haven't test it for portrait yet. When i do i will update.
+ it uses a battery grip, not using a battery grip for almost 3 years really bother me, I bought the z7ii with a battery grip.

bad
-Kind of pricey. Feature wise the z6 is almost the same. (not talking about focus stacking found on the z7ii), only the sensor is different and i don't think it is worth a k more than the z6 series.
- I used to do a few video clips, the the z6 readout on paper is better.
-iso noise on my indoor nigh shots, compared to the z6, not side by side. Low light and high iso i see more noise on the z7ii that wasn't much on the z6 from what I remembered.
-i wanted a fully articulating screen after 3years, still don't have it. Not getting the ZFc, I still have my DF. Shooting low in portrait mode a fully articulating screen is quite nice in image as I was holding a camera.

neutral:
*same body as other z6 so not having a new feel or fun learning a new camera. Good and bad.
* I do some video but not a lot so I won't touch too much on that. The Z7ii and the Z6ii have 60fps 4k verse 4k30fps of the first-gen. Not a big deal for me.
*I noticed the main direction button is more recessed or something.

Overall, I more focus on portrait (but I shoot everything, landscape, macro) and wanted more details and a battery grip. Face AF improvement. This isn't really a big upgrade over the z7, but for me coming from a z6 24mp it is an upgrade. The camera feels the same so that isn't much to learn, grant the battery grip makes it feel different. I wished i could still keep the z6 for low light and maybe video, but i don't have the extra cash and need to sell it for this tad overpriced camera. 45.6mp means i won't spray and pray my shots like i would on the Z6.
