3.0 out of 5 starsBig fail with 3-bit memory
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 9, 2020
So the promise of these has fallen short - can't have a true "Pro" if you skimp to 3-bit NAND from 2-bit. The previous generation is a better bet, without the price premium. Real world performance as well as lifetime are worse here. Very disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent NVMe Drives With an Outstanding Warranty
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 2, 2022
Capacity: 2TBStyle: 980 PROVerified Purchase
This review is for Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD. I have a pair of these in a RAID 1 Mirror setup. I have actually used them in two different systems as such. I have been very happy with the compatibility, ease of setup, and performance.

I also like the Samsung Magician and Samsung Date Migration software (although the Data Migration software has its limits). The Samsung Magician software is very easy to use, and it is very easy to update NVMe & SSD firmware with. Please note that you can't update firmware of NVMe drives that are in a RAID array or that are in an external enclosure. You will need to have the NVMe plugged into the motherboard or into a PCIe card in order to update the firmware. So, it is a good idea to update the firmware in a system that is up and running before you put the drive into a RAID array.

I have used multiple quantities and models of Samsung NVMe drives over the years in multiple systems. I have almost always used them in a RAID 1 mirror setup. My very first pair of NVMe drives were Samsung 970 Evo drives in a RAID 1 Mirror. Unfortunately, after about two years one completely failed and the second one started to crash just a few weeks later. Both drives were made on the same day, so this greatly increased the odds of them having failures near the same time. Fortunately, I was able to put the mostly working drive into an external enclosure and copy all files from it. Samsung, was fantastic in their warranty service on these drives. It was some of the best customer/warranty service I have seen a company do. So, I continue to purchase Samsung NVMe & SSDs.

The only complaint I have is that I don't like that Samsung calls these drives Pro drives. In the past Samsung reserved the Pro name for their 1 & 2-bit NAND, where this Pro is a 3-bit NAND. The lower the bit, the greater the write-durability is.

On a side note, I have been using RAID 1 Mirror arrays for a long time and on many systems. Drives don't cost much anymore, so it's a low cost option to add additional security and convenience to your system. Most motherboards have a built in RAID controller, and you can do software RAID in Windows as well. I have only used the motherboard RAID controllers myself though. RAID 1 Mirror is also allows you to remove the drive and put it into an external enclosure or into another machine to pull your data from. Also, there is one lesson I learned from my NVMe drives that crashed. Do not get multiple drives that are built from the same batch to reduce the chance of multiple drives failing at or near the same time. I now purchase drives either at different locations or at different times to get them from different batches. You will want to make sure that UPC and product numbers match. All NVMe & SSD manufacturers have alternated chips in their drives ever since supply chain issues have developed. It is critical that RAID drives be identical in specs. Also, a RAID 1 Mirror is still not a replacement for dedicated backups, especially external backups. However, it is still a big convenience when a drive does fail, and all drives do fail, eventually.

5.0 out of 5 stars pretty good option for a laptop
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 25, 2022

I recently left a review for another nvme drive, the sk hynix p41. I said in it that that drive drained my battery in my new laptop alittle too fast for my liking. I took that drive out and switched it to this samsung 980 pro. I had mentioned in the p41 review that i thought the p41 was faster than this one. When i tranaferred a 16 gb file when i hooked this one up it transferred it at about 1.5 gb/s while the p41 did it at 2.0 gb/s. Thats nothing to shake a finger at, for either drive especially since both are faster than the 900mb/s my original wd drive moved at. That being said a recent firmware seemed to help this samsung drive because after it i transferred the same file and found it moving at about 1.9gb/s so now this one is almost there although it did seem alittle less stable moving up and down between 2.0 and 1.6 a few times before settling at about 1.9 while the p41 went at 2.0 and didnt look back. That being said, this deive moves that fast, whether its 1.9gb/s or 1.5 gb/s, and still sips slowly from the battery. While the p41 gave me 4 hrs at idle(2 hours less than the stock drive), this one got me up to about 6.5 to 7 hrs at idle and about 4 hours of use time. Believe me i know the battery life is still terrible so id rather not burn through it any faster than i already do. On top of that this drive also stays cooler than the p41. While the p41 sat at 41 to 46 degrees c at idle, this one sits at 31 to 35 degrees c.

As another note on the samsung 980 pro, the samsung magician software isnt a bad utility to keep on your computer, giving you full access to speed and s.m.a.r.t data along with the ability to set the drives over provisioning, keeps you up to date with firmware updates, and give the ability to run the drive at full throttle or in a power saving mode. All my tests described earlier were with it in standard mode although i did put it in power save mode to see if that helps with battery anymore that it already did but speeds between standard and power saver were the same. Either way i have to say this utility is much better than the sk hynix utility. I didnt use the samsung migration tool so i cant speak on that. Honestly i just like sk hynix's so much i didnt care to try.

As i said in the p41 review, i still like that drive and wish i could keep it in the laptop. As is im going to keep watching for firmware updated for it in hopes of being able to put it back in my computer. But as it stands for a laptop, get the samsung 980 pro and dont look back. For a desktop, you cant go wrong with either drive

5.0 out of 5 stars Great expansion drive for PS5
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 29, 2022

Love this for my PS5. Installation was a breeze and within about five minutes I was up and running with 2TB more storage in my PS5. Can't remember the exact figure my machine gave me when it tested the drive after formatting, but it was over 6000 MB/s, just can't remember anything after the 6 :) Wish I'd snapped a pic of the speed.

Regardless, games load from the drive exactly the same as from the console; I almost want to say there's even less lag from the Samsung as there is from the built-in drive, but that might just be me imagining things. At a minimum, this drive is on par with the built-in storage.

If you're considering this for your PS5 I highly recommend it, all the heat management bits are built in, so you don't have to do anything but pop it out of the box and stick it in the console. The ONLY piece of advice I'd give you around the installation has nothing to do with this drive itself: watch videos on removing the outer plastic shell of the PS5. That was the only remotely tricky part of installation--push too hard and you can apparently break little pins; you just kind of have to fiddle with gently pulling up on the one corner while pulling gently down on the other corner until it lets go. Getting that cover off probably took me as long as the rest of the installation put together... though the whole thing took me all of five minutes lol.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bigger, Better, Faster, More!

I just installed this puppy, recovered my OS in less than 2 minutes (about 30GB compressed/100GB uncompressed) and I'm up and running. Ran CrystalDisk and it pegged reading around 6850 and writing just under 5000. I cannot get the theoretical fastest speed in the real world; copying from another NVMe only yields about 3000, which is still plenty fast enough (it might be a shared bus limitation or the speed of my other NVMe). I copied 50GB of large files (2-8GB each) to it in 18 seconds. Temps run around 45c idle, the max I saw is 56c under heavy load. The heatsink does a decent job, but I was hoping it would run cooler than my other NVMes that have aftermarket coolers. They all run between 42-47 idle. Overall, I have nothing to complain about. I have only been using it for an hour, but it's working great. And yeah, the title is a 4 Non Blondes reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!

Samsung may be expensive but they are worth every penny. I purchased a high end Dell XPS thinking all the parts in it would be the best of the best. Not so. I had constant random "blue screens" regularly. I finally decided to replace the NVMe M.2 drive. When I pulled the drive they used it was a run of the mill average drive with no heat-sync. These things run hot if you don't know. Every drive should have a heat-sync. Not having a heat-sync would like be not putting a heat-sync on a cpu. I haven't had a single blue screen event since.

If you're reading this, there's about a 90% chance you know more about PC's than I do. This is my first Build. I watched all the reviews and tutorials and blah blah, and the general co concensus was to save money on SSD, you don't need Gen 4, go for size over speed... you've heard it all. Buuuut I'm a Man, sooo Go Big or Go Home! I had 2 larger SSD's I took out of my old pc for mass storage, this is my boot drive and I'm keeping my games I play regularly on it.
Again, I'm far from an expert, I just like to play games. This drive works great and my games do open faster than normal, but that could also be the cpu and ram... I have no idea, it doesn't matter, just buy it.
I put it in a MSI B550 Tomahawk with 5800x3d and a 3080, 32 gb ddr4 ram

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for PS5

I bought one of these to expand the storage on my PS5. It was easy to install with the official PlayStation instructions and it works like a charm. I can’t tell the difference between games installed in my stock PS5 SSD and my Samsung 980 PRO.

When you install the Samsung SSD it works in concert with the previously installed SSD so it effectively tripled the amount of space I have on my PS5. Games like Fortnite can sit in my PS5 storage guilt free and I don’t have to worry about installing games with my PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.

5.0 out of 5 stars ❗️PS5 Review❗️YOU CAN INSTALL AND PLAY PS5 GAMES STRAIGHT OF THIS SSD AFTER LATEST UPDATE🔥🔥
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 29, 2022

To all my ps5 players, this device is what you're missing. A little while ago you couldn't play ps5 games off of any extended storage, now after the latest updates, you can install and play STRAIGHT OUT OF THE SSD without having to move to console storage. That's why I would highly recommend getting the 2TB SSD to get that extra space for just a little more money. It gave me a speed of 6500mb/s which is outrageous (advertised at 7500mb/s) which is pretty darn close. My games used to lag so much while playing especially with COD warzone. Now it runs and never skips a beat. Best thing I've ever bought for my playstation 5. Also the installing process is super easy and only needs a screwdriver. Anyone who finds a hard time installing this should sell their playstation because it's literally just 2 screws and 💥 DONE❗️

5.0 out of 5 stars Used for PS5

I purchased the 1TB with heat sink attachment for my PlayStation 5. No assembly required!

Once I installed stick, I followed the easy on-screen prompting and was ready to play within 5MiN!

I bought this during their sale price and it was totally worth it. It is a steep price for just being 1TB but the reading speed, according to the console, is 7.5GB/s. That’s fast!

Overall, if you’re not familiar on how to install a heat sink or gel, it’s best to buy the one that plug & play.

**UPDATE**
I have been playing a few games for sometime now and I have to say it hasn’t skipped a beat. Extremely fast load times!

I discovered a cool feature that I didn’t know the PS5 had. You can set the console to download ps5 games to the main drive or the extended drive while the ps4 games could be installed on the opposite drive. Cool way to keep your games organized. Should you choose to upgrade the stick to a 2TB you’ll know exactly what games are in the memory stick. Anyways, totally worth it.
