How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

As a person of color who has also been provided many privileges based on gender, etc., but have also experienced discrimination, being marginalised for my race, this guidebook was extremely enlightening and Eye opening. Thank you Karen for writing this book and for sharing all of the great resources. It will be one of my go to references and something I will most definitely share across my network.

As a university professor, and committee member for our D+I initiative I really wanted to find a source that would provide ideas in helping us improve our campus climate of inclusivity. Though the book did provide some insight, it hyper focused on female inclusion in tech and presentations. It was also somewhat elitist in regards to organizational focus. When considering how much discrimination occurs in lower wage/ education industries this book didn't really help. As a female, and member of the LGBTQ community there were so many missed opportunities here. Much of the text focused on attending presentations etc., an area where a lot of low-socioeconomic employers/employees find difficult to afford. More latitude was needed in the book to encapsulate a broader perspective of the workforce. That said, i respect the authors intent, journey, and experience in the field of inclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars You owe it to yourself and to others to read this book, and then put it to good use!

Karen’s book is a must-read for today’s professional. She weaves a story around the importance of allyship and then provides many suggestions for how to be a better ally that can be put to use immediately, both in the workplace as well as with family and friends.

Recently, a young, white male who works for me and was asking me what it was like being a woman in tech. He admitted he couldn’t really put himself in my place but could only imagine what it must be like, what challenges I had faced and still do. So I handed him the book which I kept on my desk at work. He devoured it and came back to me and we had a thoughtful conversation about what he had learned and how he now was enlightened and felt well-equipped to become an ally in the workplace. He handed the book back to me but I suggested he pass it along to a (white male) buddy, which he did! One step at a time…one person at a time!

Read it. Now. You’ll learn a lot. Then put it to use in your next live or virtual meeting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Packed with practical tips for combating workplace bias

“Unfortunately, diverse and inclusive workplaces are elusive. They are both difficult to find and hard to create.” Better Allies begins with this truthbomb.

The author pulls no punches: your workplace is NOT a meritocracy if the demographics state otherwise.

I’ve long considered myself an ally, advocate and champion, but it isn’t always clear what to DO. And I think every well-intentioned ally has experienced the feeling of trepidation: am I getting this all wrong? Or the moment of doubt when you see an example of bias or discrimination and want to speak up, but aren’t sure what to say.

This book breaks down the different roles an ally can play (sponsor, champion, advocate, amplifier, scholar, upstander, confidant.) It includes loads of scenarios that show how to take all that good intent and channel it into effective, bias-busting action — and guide others to do the same.

It is packed with practical tips, including how to not be a bystander, scripts for confronting microaggressions, tons of examples of inclusive language, and checklists for eliminating bias at every stage in the hiring process.

Buy copies for your team (and leave one on your boss’s desk!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" to have the workplace everyone wants to be in, wants to stay, and thrives

Book is great. Read it through and have reread sections when I need specific advice. Here's the thing: Your market today is EVERYONE: all races, ethnicities, genders, and age groups. So, to maximize your value, your impact, or your profit, means designing or making your product work for and be coveted by everyone, not just customers that "look and think like you". Best way to do that is with a diverse workforce, having members with first hand experience being all the types of customers out there. The challenge is: how do you recruit, retain, and maximize the productivity of so many who don't look, think, talk like you or have had a very different life experience than you? This book tells you how, in clear, understandable ways. Especially valuable for providing lots of examples. Speaks in practical terms rather than theoretical or abstract. This book is for everyone, from the lowest level employee to the middle managers to the C-suite executives. Buy the book, apply the suggestions, and reap the benefits of a more creative, competitive, and enjoyable workplace!

I chose this for a diversity reading group, it's not one I would have selected on my own. While the author has good insight on issues related to the tech world, I had difficulty relating to her and some of the examples provided past the first few chapters. This is heavily geared to her own experiences in the tech world and left me desiring a lot more.

This book is allyship in action. A wealth of knowledge and insights told through the lens of asking "what do others need to feel supported" rather than "what do I think is best?". Karen handles this topic expertly with practical tips and guidance to actually practice beyond the words of the page and introduce many experts and resources that I've since added to my list of follows and must reads!

5.0 out of 5 stars This gives you a blueprint of what active allyship looks like and a roadmap to make it happen

Many books and articles tell us about the dangers of not having a diverse workplace and the gains from being inclusive. But, if you are far from this goal, or you are an individual contributor, you might not know where to start. This book helps you with this roadmap. It starts with how to identify ally behavior and how to listen and learn as an ally. Then, it gives you actions to shift your behavior, support others, and change the workplace. This gives you a blueprint of what active allyship looks like, from conferences, giving feedback, mentoring, sponsoring, hiring, and meetings. There's also a bonus chapter on what to do if you are white and male - take action, know your story, encourage your workplace change, and more.

This the first book on my journey to more deeply understand my role in the diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racist movement. Catlin’s straight-forward, actionable guide to the movement was a great place to start. Step-by-step, this book reminds us of simple, everyday actions that can improve the workplace for everyone. Highly recommended.
