5.0 out of 5 starsBest optical switch keyboard I've used. 3mm travel distance!!!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 20, 2021
As a quick aside, my judgment on keyboards is mostly based on the functionality/specs and I can overlook some things if it allows me to perform better, although in my opinion this keyboard doesn't really disappoint me in terms of how it feels to use. Also, ever since I experienced the lower input delay of an optical switch board, I'll probably never go back to traditional mechanical, so I've been stuck in the limited optical switch/hall effect switch keyboard market. I've tried several of the other optical switch keyboards as more brands begin to offer them, and up until now I concluded that Bloody provided the best performing optical switch boards for my uses. The Z20 takes the functionality of Bloody's optical switches and puts a better build quality and feel on it. The Bloody B820 (linear) was my favorite keyboard before this, and the reason the Z20 caught my eye was because it's also a 3mm travel distance optical switch keyboard, which there are very very few of.

I'll first explain the main thing I'm very picky about when it comes to optical switch keyboards, that can make or break a keyboard for me no matter how good it otherwise is.
I primarily do very hard challenges in precision platformers and play osu!mania. As a result, I'm part of the subset of people who perhaps benefit the most from the lowest latency/fastest/most consistent hardware. For the things I do in platformers, I need to be able to consistently do inputs of at least as low as 2 frames (so at least as low as 16ms-17ms). I was surprised to find out that pretty much EVERY other optical switch keyboard was capped at a minimal input of 22ms-28ms (this effectively makes it so that about half the time I do the lowest input the keyboard is capable of, it will actually output as a 3 frame input). The reason I liked the Bloody keyboards was because they had no limitation and were able to do inputs as low as 1ms, giving me full control. The Z20 can do inputs of as low as 1ms just like with Bloody's optical switches, which is more than good but doesn't really matter because anything below 15ms is essentially useless.

The second thing I'm picky about when it comes to optical switch keyboards is how low the travel distance is. Ever since I experienced 3.0mm travel I pretty much can't go back, at least for the keyboard I use for osu!mania; travel distance makes a huge difference for speed and stamina for rhythm games, or really any game where you need to mash as fast as you can. The Z20 linear has a 3.0mm travel, which is incredible not only because I feel right at home again, but because SO few other brands offer that, Bloody being the only other one up until now as far as I'm aware. For other games low travel distance isn't really important, but it's nice to know that I'm not really limited in how fast I can press buttons.

My thoughts on all the other personally less important miscellaneous things about the keyboard that I can think of:
- keypresses are just as responsive as I've experienced with other optical switches, very low input delay
- 45g actuation force is great for mashing speed/stamina; I wish brands would make switches with lower actuation force but as far as the main standard values go this is as low as you could ask for
- I like that the keys feel softer to press and have lower clack pitch than the Bloody B820 I used before (typing doesn't sound like a rattlesnake to Me LOL)
- 4000hz doesn't really matter for the games I play
- don't care about special dedicated hotkeys or media buttons
- the Top Sensor feature is cool but not really important I feel
- there is some key ping, but I can't hear it with headphones on, and otherwise you kind of have to be listening for it
- I don't usually use wrist rests, so I can't tell you how good I think it is. All I can say is that it's soft, squishy, and made with leather material.
- RGB looks nice with the side bars
- RGB software is more limited than others, but I'm fine with any of the default rainbow effects. (it's at least not as bad as Bloody's software lmao)

The Z20 is basically a keyboard that functions the same as the Bloody B820 but feels better and has a lot of added features that may or may not matter to you. Nonetheless it's the best keyboard I've used so far, and I've used a lot. If you're thinking you want a keyboard like this but don't want to totally break the bank, I'd recommend just getting the Bloody B820.
EDIT 9/3/22: this is now significantly cheaper than the Bloody B820, just buy this if that is still the case.

I'm in no way an expert in keyboards, but I have a love hate relationship with the EVGA Z20. This thing was close to being perfect when I first used it. Now that I'm a month in there are issues with it. I debated on whether or not to return it since its not functioning as I would of likes.

For example the TOF sensor works for turning it on and off pretty well. But the light animation is so laggy that it looks like the keyboard is spazzing out for a few seconds then gives up and goes to the color layout that it normally runs.
-My number 2 and 3 keys stick which I'm hoping I can fix bc my amazon warranty is out. I just discovered this...
-The customization of it with the layers barely works. I often have to close out of the software and reopen it for it to show the layers I set. Even when it does work there is very little that can be customized.
-What's the point of macro's if you can't make them on the fly? It's my main source of spamming chats to my friends!
-This keyboard is extremely loud coming from a membrane keyboard. I was hoping it would be quieter then mechanical cherry mx switcher my brother has but its just as loud. I might of went with the clicky version if I known this but it doesn't bother me much anymore.

Now that I'm done complaining let me tell you what's awesome about it.
-You barely have to hit the keys for them to work. Some may hate that but I love it especially since my 2 and 3 key sticks if I push it down all the way. I noticed right away it was more responsive. But that's comparing it to my old keyboard the Logitech g15 v1 which will be missed bc of the screen which I used often.
-The colors are bright very bright and I hear it can be brighter with switching out the keys.
-The keyboard has the ability to put the pc asleep when you walk away for so long which is cool.
-It has a headphone jack which I don't use since it has no mic input which I probably wouldn't use either way.
-It has a USB but never tested that either.

Overall it's a decent keyboard. The product itself I really like except for the 2 keys of course. My major gripe is the poorly made software that has really no cool effects and a poorly designed creation tool for customizing your own. I wish I could make my own animations.

Update: after 2 months of ownership

The most important thing that ships with your keyboard is the keycap puller!!! Dont lose it! My keyboard stopped working for 2 weeks. I tried everything from a new pc to trying every usb port on my pc to fix it. I may have shaken it a few times just in case... Amazon refused to refund bc it was a few days past a month. Evga said to ship it to them and they'll see if they can fix it but I had no way to ship it... So I decided to grab the key puller and proceeded with un capping every key... Washed them in the sink and wiped the keyboard down with a damp cloth. After replacing them the keyboard lit up and was working fine... When I told that to evga they said I must be lying bc that's impossible... So I continued using it for a while, then 9 keys would press randomly. So again, I pulled off the keys and put them back on. The keyboard works again. Then another key would stick and wont pop up. Again pull off the key and replace. The keyboard is back to working perfectly. I pull my keys once to twice a week on average to keep this thing going. I wish I would of bought something cheaper since this is worst then the $10 Logitech keyboard I just bought. Don't Waste Your Money!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Keyboard for a great price

I really like this keyboard! When my Logitech G910 started to fail and repeating letters/keystrokes I was in the market for a budget friendly yet comparable keyboard. This one impressed me more than expected. It has the multimedia keys I enjoyed with my previous keyboard as well as programmable keys for gaming (I haven't used them, but the option is there). The RGB is excellent, and there is a sensor that detects motion to turn it on for use. Otherwise it will turn itself off when not in use.

One thing I didn't like was how it was sent. It arrived without any additional packaging, and the carrier left it on my porch facing the street instead of on the inside of the porch where it would not be visible. The lack of packaging made it very obvious to anyone passing by what it was. The poor choice of delivery was the fault of the carrier. Other than that, it arrived quickly and in excellent condition.

The key travel takes a little bit of getting used to at first but once you do this is a fantastic keyboard. I haven't owned any linear key keyboards before but I don't know if I can use any other now that I've used this one. The software on the other hand isn't great.

The quality of the keyboard is very good, the sensitivity is very good. The LED light effect is very nice. The volume button is stuck. Cable is too big. Makes the keyboard feel bad. It looks like 3 cables combined into one. My only problem is. The sound of the keyboard is too loud. I have a Logitech g910 Keyboard. I used sound testing software. The evga z20 keyboard hits 95 to 96 dB. Logitech G910 Keyboard Reach 86db You have your own room with the door closed when you play games. Then this keyboard will be fine for you. Otherwise it will be too noisy. Influence family members when you play games at night. The most important thing is that the switches are not removable to fit another switch in. You can only replace the top caps. If so, the durability will not be equal to other keyboards that can replace the Switch. When I have turned off the computer but I am sitting at the table to do other things, the keyboard lights up. Forced me to turn off the power switch .total of the whole table. If this keyboard had a quiet sound like Logitech's, it would be great. I regret having to return it

Alex G
5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Keyboard I've used so far
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 19, 2021
Verified Purchase
First off, what I do as a hobby tends to destroy keyboards exceptionally easily. Playing rhythm games on a keyboard means that I'm putting hundreds of thousands of keypresses every single day per key that I use. Alongside the large amount of general use I do besides that. That said, I've gone through a number of mechanical keyboards to fine what works for me, and survives what I do. Yet, this keyboard still feels as solid as when I bought it 3 months ago, which isn't normal.

When I first saw the optical switch concept, I thought it would be a gimick, and wouldn't really be a thing, let alone be useful for playing games on. Fast forward to today, and that's all changed. I love this thing, and it still feels just as great when I bought it in April.

Unlike some other optical switch keyboards, the key design still allows you to use the standard keycaps design for swapping out new ones. Which is really handy if you like to customize the look, or select only a few keys for specific purposes. The RGB is nice, customizable, and honestly really compliments it well. I would say my biggest gripe has been that the window lock key at the top is too easy to press, when I just want to hit the ESC key. But thonestly, that is about it besides what I'll mention shortly.

One review really urked me on this keyboard, and poorly reviewed it for nonsensical reasons.
-Box. Seriously? If you need to judge what the capability of a device is just by its presentation via cardboard... you really don't have any reason to get electronics. If you want that experience, just make your own birthday present the way you want...
-Software. I agree completely that the software leaves much to be desired. That in itself is justifiable if you need macros and personal setups, as it is painful to deal with. However, unlike the hardware itself, software tends to be updated over time, and improved, so a review at any given time on it is just short-sighted to say the least.
-Cable. Yes, the cable is thicc. Yes, I spelled it that way. No I don't care. A thick cable is a detractor absolutely, it just isn't something that ultimately deserves to be taken so seriously. For anyone wondering why, it's because having the device capable of polling up to 4000hz, means that the slightest interence will result in dead inputs, and can really screw you over. Therefore, it needs a lot more insulation to protect itself from outside intereferences, as well as the other USB3.0 and audio signals.

4.0 out of 5 stars The price is very reasonable for a full size keyboard. I got the Z20 and it did not let me down.

I got this keyboard and this is what I found out:
+ The optical switches are really good. I got the linear one (since clicky is really annoying). It's very smooth, fast respond with 4000Mhz. Sounds great and clear and does not disturb you as bad as the clicky.
+RGB is amazing, the color and effects are really nice with the EVGA driver. Along the the TOF sensor, it's just a bonus feature but also very cool.
+Metal board so no flex when pressing down.
+The palm rest is decent and magnetic. If you a better one then use it.
Down sides:
-Personally I don't like having those macro keys and the very left. I usually misclick those as Ctrl and Shift key. I don't like the 4D Bump on WASD as I could sometime misclick the F key (which also has a bump) . It does come with extra keycap with no Bump so u can swap it out.
-The stabilizer is not that great. I mean, it does not show up bad respond. But it doesn't good either. It's like in the middle.
-The EVGA driver is not that well optimized for doing custom LED keys.

P/s: If I want to mod this Keyboard, I would balance the stabilizer and lube those switches more and insert a foam for Thocc sounds.
