Functional but could be better

Two weeks after purchase, I have been using this scale to weigh my beans/grounds/water/pour over process. I find the pros and cons as following:

pros:
> Great timer function
> Does not shut down automatically while the timer is in effect
> No annoying beeping sounds like some other models have

cons:
> delay in weighs changes; I find it hard to pour a perfect amount of water because by the time I saw the number, it has already exceeded that amount in real time. I wouldn't say this is the biggest flaw in this model. And it is also why I gave this product 4 stars.
> shut down automatically after a while. This function could be useful for some people that always forget to turn it off. But I find it annoying when I was multitasking, the scale just automatically shuts down and I have to go through the weighing process again.

Really unreliable

I've bought 3 of these and only one works. I needed 2 so I bought 2; one was dead in arrival so I returned it and bought a 3rd, and after a few months that one won't turn on any more. (I think some sort of problem with the capacitive buttons because if I open the case and short the power button wires with a screwdriver, it turns on and will work for another day or two.)

Also when it works, it's really slow to refresh the weight display - I end up having to wait 2 seconds every time I add or remove a single bean.

It's too bad because
- it looks nice
- the feature set with scale and timer in a single device is really easy to use
- everyone recommends this model and there aren't really other nice looking options with the same feature set in this price range

But fool me twice? I'm done.

Scammed by Amazon or GK Sellers or Hario or ... caveat emptor

I bought a Hario V60 Coffee Scale & Timer from GK Sellers through Amazon on Feb.15, 2021. The timer button stopped working, so I contacted Hario and they told me GK Sellers is not an Authorized Vendor so they will not honor the one year warranty. I then contacted [via chat] Amazon Customer Service and they directed me to GK Sellers storefront page to contact the seller, but when -- as instructed --I clicked the Ask A Question button there is no prompt to contact GK Sellers about a defective product, 🤔 . So then I called Amazon Customer Service and they directed me to the same page with the same instructions, and after two people and 30+ minutes on the phone going over the same old ground, Amazon then tried to contact GK Sellers, but couldn't, 🤔 . So I went back to the GK Seller's storefront page and clicked the Leave Seller Feedback button, but wouldn't you know, it goes to a feedback page populated with the sellers of other products I have purchased but not GK Sellers 🤔 .
Hario won't honor their warranty because GK Sellers isn't an Authorized Vendor -- "If you do purchase from Amazon in the future, I would suggest purchasing items "fullfilled [sic] by Amazon Services" or from Press18, Twokeys or Ignite Ideas. I can confirm that their products are legit." Really? How was I supposed to know THAT? So, Hario can't stop unauthorized vendors from selling their products on Amazon?
Amazon will offer a partial refund [it is after all outside the 30 day window] and I pay for shipping. So, Amazon can't police companies from selling products they are not authorized to sell, and will do business with a company they can't even contact?
GK Sellers has made it impossible for anyone to contact them. Their storefront page shows a 100% satisfaction rate with over 700 sales 🤔 . Really? But then that is probably due to the fact that you CANNOT submit a negative review on the GK Sellers storefront page -- and who is policing THAT?
So, I have a coffee scale with a timer that doesn't work and NO ONE is taking any responsibility. I give them 0 stars.

Cash really is king.

I'm on my second Hario VST-2000B (black basic scale/timer). I bought the first one in December 2019. Periodically, the timer would start and stop when it felt like it and turning it off and on again would usually make it behave. By around March 2020, the timer issue started becoming a problem. In the middle of a pour it would stop, take longer to count up to the next second or reset to zero and start over again. All without me doing anything. The scale side also started having minor issues like it couldn't decide what weight to settle on. It would just run up and down several 10ths of a gram and keep doing that until you restarted. Like someone said, it's hard to find a contact for Hario but I think I found an email address on their website. I emailed them and they were very responsive and helpful. We emailed back and forth and I sent them a video of the issue. The video is quite long so I'm not posting it. It was good enough for Hario cause they sent out a new one from Japan at no cost to me. Great. But after a few weeks, the gremlins started on this one too. Same exact things. I've tried changing batteries but it didn't help. Starting and stopping sometimes helped but you can't do that in the middle of a pourover. So I started using a timer app on my phone instead (which works quite well. It's called MultiTimer: Multiple Timers in the Apple store) . Today, the scale would just not stop running up and down. And the timer kept starting on its own too. No number of turning on/off or taking out the batteries would make it stop which prompted this review. I pulled out the old one and used the scale on that one instead. This is the first Hario product that has disappointed. Both scales have been treated well so unless they hate TLC, it's not due to abuse. I'm considering replacing these with something else. Others have had no issues with theirs so bummed that I'm not as lucky.

nice looking scale

nice looking scale. However, it is not made very well. Shortly after I received it, the top base broke off from the bottom foundation. It is held on by four very thin plastic pieces which broke easily. I think another poster in this thread had the same thing happen.

Recommend for home use

Overall quite pleased with this purchase and would recommend. This won’t be better than an Acaia scale, but the compromises are acceptable given the price.

The display is a negative LCD, so the whole LCD is black with the numerals showing in monochrome. Contrast is good and I was able to read in direct sunlight. The display also has a white backlight and no issues in a dimly lit kitchen.

It takes a few seconds to boot up from off to ready to begin weighing. Just long enough to notice but not too much of a bother.

This has an internal rechargeable 800mAh NiMH battery that is not user replaceable. The instructions even say to replace the scale when the battery goes flat, a bit disappointed no service options are available. A Li-ion would have been nice, but the NiMH should be fine in this application.

The buttons are my biggest complaint. It has two capacitive touch buttons and I just don’t like capacitive buttons. You have to look down to locate each button as there’s no tactile locating ridges, then carefully look at the display to see if your press registered as there’s no audible beep when a button is pressed.

This scale has some minor measurement lag. It’s hard to quantify, but in general the lag is up to a second for fractions of a gram, weighing to the whole gram is very fast.

Perfect for Espresso

I bought this scale to replace/upgrade one of the sub-$20 scales that bit the dust after a year. I bought this scale for one purpose only -- to weight 16.0g of coffee beans to the nearest 10th of a gram for double espresso shots (I use a zero-retention grinder). It does that job with an accuracy and reproducibility that the sub-$20 scale could only dream about but never approach. The scale is very light all plastic construction so one might be tempted to be careless with its handling. Like all precision instruments it should be handled gently and not grabbed by the weighing plate or bounced on the counter.

Right out of the box I tossed the batteries that came with it and installed a pair of Duracells. I placed it on my level granite counter top and turned it on with a light touch of the capacitive switch. A new penny weighs 2.5g. I placed 4 pennies on the scale one at a time and watched the display weight increase in exactly 2.5g increments to 10.0g. I lightly tapped the weighing plate to perturb the display weight. When it settled, it went right back to 10.0g. I then took the pennies off the scale one at a time and watched the display decrement by exactly 2.5g increments back to zero. The sub-$20 scale couldn't come close to this performance -- the penny test was always off +/- 0.3g with each penny added or removed and the tap test was always off by up to 0.6g.

When weighing coffee beans, I tare a container (that weighs 10.0g) and weigh the beans into it. I can add or remove beans 1 at a time to get to the target weight and the scale responds reproducibly. After I dump the beans into the grinder, I return the weighing container to the scale and the tare is retained -- the scale reads zero. The sub-$20 scale always had to be re-zeroed. The scale does display negative weights. When I remove the tared weighing container from the plate, the display reads -10.0g. The scale also weighs in 0.1g increments up to 200g.

If you are a coffee guy/gal who is looking for a scale to accurately and reproducibly weigh beans for espresso, this is it. Worth every penny. Handle it with care and I'm sure it will last

You Get Just About What You Pay For

For $45 dollars this isn't a terrible deal. The problem, and I find it rather annoying, is how accurate the start/stop button is. I find myself pressing it several times, each time a little harder, to get it to start or stop. There is a slight delay in when you press it and when the numbers begin to count, so when you think you haven't activated it, you actually have.... but then you press it again because you think you haven't, and then you actually turn it off again. On top of this lack of visual synchronicity, there is also no touch component to the button. It's like pressing a solid piece plastic, as opposed to an actually button) and therefore you also can't tell it's been activated via touch . Anyway, it's somewhat cheaply made, but then again, $45 isn't a whole lot for a rather sensitive measuring device. Not sure what the next step up is in price/quality, but I suppose I'll ride this one out until I drop it (that will surely be the end).

UPDATE: After removing batteries and reinstalling, the scale reset and is now working very nicely. Before doing so, I looked at numerous reviews on both Amazon and extensively on the Internet. I found that Hario remains one of the top-rated scales for accuracy, ease-of-use, ideal size, quality build, etc. I recommend giving Hario a try before purchasing a less expensive unit. After all, the Hario V60 is not cheaply priced for a reason.

Prior review: Nice coffee scale. However, it began malfunctioning 8 months after purchasing and using it very lightly only once a day. Other reviewers have noted similar behavior. For the cost of this unit, one would expect reliability for a much longer period of time. I’m replacing this unit, but not with this same brand.”
