5.0 out of 5 starsSo Far So Good - Purchased During Black Friday 2019
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2020
*Update 09/30/2021*
Still working like a dream. Haven't had a single issue since day one and I game and video edit heavily so it's running for most of the day every day.

If you're like me, you've seen this thing floating around on lists in places like LinusTechTips forums etc, and it's rankd pretty darn low compared to a lot of other PSUs. It's enough to make you second guess ever buying one of these things. Well it went on sale during black friday and for the price, an 850W 80+ Gold fully modular PSU? I couldn't ignore it. I closed my eyes tightly and clicked "ship". Been using this thing ever since. I never use eco mode. Seems unnecessary since the PSU isn't noisy to begin with and I'd rather just know it's always keeping itself as cool as possible. It came packaged like a champ, lots of extra cables and straps included. Cables are all black so that's nice. My only gripe is that the cables are a little stiff. They're built tough as hell for sure, but they could have been more flexible. I've had to route cables in ways I would have preferred not to for the sake of tidiness but the cables just couldn't bend enough to do what I originally planned. Still, god quality cables nonetheless. Love the green design of the fan cover and the green LED when it's on. If I ever run into issues I'll come back here and give it a proper thrashing but as of now, It's been handling my rig well with no issues.

So, to get the warranty, you have to go online and register the product. However, to get to the registration page you have to not only make an account but also must " accept the processing of my personal data as set out in EVGA's Privacy Policy."

That is HARD BS and I will not be buying any more PSU's from EVGA. You give a warranty when a customer buys a product, you don't shoehorn in stuff like this. Completely ridiculous. Will be returning without a doubt.

1.0 out of 5 stars Causes Overheating Within 10 Minutes
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2022
Size: 650WStyle: GTPattern Name: Power SupplyVerified Purchase
I ordered this because my PC wouldn't POST, with the code indicating a problem with the power supply or motherboard. I borrowed the PSU from another machine, a ThermalTake SP-550PCBUSthat I bought for $60 in 2013. It worked fine, so I concluded that the other PSU was faulty, read a ton of reviews, and settled on this one.

The instructions are sparse, but I followed them completely when installing. However, they state that the cables must be connected in a certain orientation and that "the connections going to the power supply will not have 'break downs'." That's inaccurate. The motherboard (MB) connection is broken on the PSU side, will only plug in that way, and the side that connects to the motherboard is unbroken. It was such a glaring error that I had to triple-check. There was a sticker over the on/off switch saying that the AutoEco system only turns on the fan under load.

After installing, the computer booted just fine. Success! Within 10 minutes of light use, it locked up, the fans all got super-loud, and I had to shut it down hard. It apparently overheated. I re-checked all of the connections, re-read what it said about the cable orientation, looked at BIOS options, and tried again. It happened again. From what I could tell, the fan on the PSU never spun at all. To verify that there was nothing that I was doing to anger it, I turned it on one last time, checked my clock, and walked away. In under 8 minutes, I heard my fans screaming, walked over, and saw that it had locked up again.

For reference, I was running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, and these were the only components connected:
Dell Optiplex 990 (i7-2600 CPU @3.40GHz)
EVGA GeForce GTX 960
16GB Crucial VengeanceLP, 1600MHz DDR3
WD 1TB SSD - WDS100T2G0A

I can only speculate what the problem was. The best thing that I can say about this device is that it didn't fry any of my components. I've since read up on the AutoEco system, but I still don't understand how it operates. The manual hints that it can be disabled, and it seems that some units have switches, but this one doesn't. Maybe the motherboard wasn't sending a signal it expected? Maybe the unit was faulty? Cables? I decided that troubleshooting every permutation wasn't where I wanted to be when Jesus comes back, set up the RMA, and ordered a ThermalTake for half the price. Now, I can get on OkCupid, find a date, and hopefully move out of my wife's boyfriend's basement.

1.0 out of 5 stars PSU was a nightmare
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022

I swapped out my EVGA 750w PSU with this one when I bought my new GPU. There were problems from the very start of powering on my PC. Now, I feel I must make note that I have worked in the IT field for over 20 years and have built more PCs than I can count; I know what I'm doing. Immediately after powering on the PSU, every device powered by SATA got surged. All of the LED fans sparked, stopped spinning, and started to smell like smoke. I immediately powered off and began to troubleshoot; swapping cables, connector ports, etc. I disconnected from the MB and tested with some other fans and they did the exact same thing. Hoping I didn't cause any damage to other components, I put the 750w back in and powered back up. New fans didn't seem to have any issues, but my system didn't recognize any of the SSDs I had so I lost ALL of my data from the OS drive to files/folders/videos/pictures/music; many of which hadn't been backed up... because my backup drive just got fried. I ended up sending the PSU back as defective, but the worst part was losing photos and other important data, along with the cost of purchasing new SSDs and fans. Luckily, it did not surge the MB or GPU.

1.0 out of 5 stars This Powers Supply Unit comes with the WRONG CPU plugs
Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2022

Or I should say, that the Powers Supply Unit that I received came with the WRONG CPU plugs

The first time I plugged it into a motherboard, it would not boot up. I thought the new motherboard was defective so I sent it back.

Now, with the replacement motherboard here, I was taking a closer look at every step as I proceeded to get ready to install the motherboard. Before I even put the motherboard into the case, I wanted to check the CPU power plugs, for some reason, I did wonder about those.

Sure enough, the CPU power plugs only fit the motherboard if you install it backwards, but then the part that goes to the power supply will not fit right.

The motherboard side of the CPU power plugs are all wrong. No wonder they are frying some people's motherboards and connected parts!

Perhaps not all of these power supply units have messed up CPU power plugs, by mine sure does.

Now I have to wonder about all the rest of the power plugs too.

Somebody needs to start paying more attention to the quality of their product, and make sure these power plugs are made correctly!

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS FROM AMAZON
Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2022

I purchased this PSU as I was upgrading my GPU and needed a higher wattage. After installing, I eagerly switched the power on... to nothing. A small click and a flash of a VGA LED motherboard light were the only indications of life. Try as I might I spent hours and hours troubleshooting; clearing CMOS in every way possible, rewiring the entire computer, quadruple checking all ports for loose connections, and unseating the GPU to run without. All of this to no avail. I gave up and headed to the nearest Microcenter to get it looked at. They were attentive and genuinely interested in fixing my machine, and quickly found out that, you guessed it, my brand new PSU was busted. And no way to repair, besides buy another.

If you want to buy this PSU off of Amazon, just be prepared for it to not work, and know where your nearest UPS Store is so that you can handle the return.

I have absolutely no problem with EVGA, they are a pretty reliable company with good warranties.

1.0 out of 5 stars I've heard good things but it was DOA.
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2022

Got this for my new PC build. Great reviews, was on a very decent sale too.

CONS: DOA, due to shipping ended up getting a different brand locally.

PROS: Very nice solid looking/feeling brick.
Free power tester included (so you don't have to use a paper clip)
Cables felt good/pliable, easy enough to work with for management.
Includes SINGLE PLUG 8/6+2 cables (2 I believe) which is AMAZING for your GPU since you should NOT be daisy-chaining power that's going to your GPU. At least not with the power hungry cards. This helps make a cleaner looking build.
Nice little bags for all the cables, cables are labeled well.

Unfortunately I rolled my D20 and got a 1. Thing was DOA. Wouldn't power anything, even with the tester it wouldn't spin the fan or show any signs of life. Ended up getting my $$ back rather than a replacement due to shipping delays indicating it would take 7 days to get it shipped (with Prime even). Yes that's too long to wait when you're building a PC and need to know if anything else is DOA. Ended up picking up a Corsair model at the local BB instead.

I will say, that while I greatly enjoy the quality of the Corsair so far, the EVGA Supernova 850 G6 came with FAR SUPERIOR cables. Corsair's cables are ungodly stiff and hard to work with (which sucks when you're trying to make a clean build). Corsair also ONLY provided daisy-chained cables for the GPU. There were enough for me to use 2 separate cables (which is highly recommended on RTX 30 series cards), but that means I have the extra plugs just sitting there looking less clean than single plug cables. Corsair seems hell-bent on making their cables frustrating and crappy enough that you'll drop $100 on their premium cable upgrade kits. Very tempting, but it makes me very bitter so I'm sticking with the default ones since I managed to get everything situated.

1.0 out of 5 stars G5 PSU is NOT compatible with any existing GQ EVGA SATA Cables - you will melt your equipment/PC
Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2021
Size: 650WStyle: G5Pattern Name: Power SupplyVerified Purchase
ok, so I thought I had learned my lesson years ago not mixing and matching PSU cables between EVGA, Corsair, Seasonic etc.

So I went to move a new G5 650 EVGA PSU into an existing PC which had a EVGA 750 GQ - it is a nice AMD Ryzen 3600 in a beQuiet 600DX case. As that PC had no SATA or HDDs I wanted to use the new G5 with it (with only two SATA sockets and two PCIe) - so I could free up the 750 GQ for a more powerful setup with a lot of drives.

Plugged it in minutes, changed over the main mobo power cable (now fully modular). also changed the graphics card at same time. reconnected, turned on... lights on... all good... but...
What is that smell!?!?!
Then my son said - "Dad I can see smoke inside!"
OMG - turn off now...
After investigation we found that an ARGB cable (to the JRAINBOW connector on MSI mobo) from the front panel of the bequiet had melted.
I have just spent many hours investigating what on earth went wrong. I thought it was a dodgy USB cable and plug which had shorted, then something to do with graphics card... then finally I got a multi-meter onto the SATA cable which then provides a +5V to the front panel.
On a normal 5-pin SATA cable the voltages should read +12V, GND, +5V, GND, +3.3V
on my 5-pin SATA cable I was getting -5V, GND, -5V, +7V, GND
which basically means I was feeding in -5V to the front panel rather than +5V

I don't know if the mobo or lighting circuitry is hosed or not... I will try and get a new front panel PCB and connectors from beQuiet!

Summary: DON'T use your existing PSU Cables EVEN IF THEY ARE FROM EVGA - you will melt, set fire and kill your PC
EVGA: WHY oh WHY would you do this with modern range of your PSUs - why not leave the pin out alone!!

This review is for, EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G3, 80 Plus Gold 550W
On the surface it looks good... 80 Plus Gold, 5 year warranty, good price...
I purchased this from Amazon in FEB 2020. AUG 2021, the SATA-power cable caught fire. It melted the connection point on the hard drive in the process.
Ok... company support - The site says you can 'Request' a RMA without a 'ticket #'... nope - page won't submit without a ticket #. Next = telephone: First call, recording says wait time is thirty minutes to speak with someone. (hung up) Second call only 15 minute wait. Spoke with rep, he asked me to email photos of the damaged power supply and the damaged hard drive. I did so. I get an email saying that since I spoke with a rep they were closing the ticket ..... HANG ON!!! They never gave me the ticket # to submit the RMA request. Third phone call... (insert exasperated sigh) ok, after the third phone call service was what you would expect. RMA approved... return shipping label provided... The replacement they sent was a step up, from 500W to a 600W. In a follow up email they even asked about the hard drive... if I sent them the original proof of purchase... they would what? they did not specify a monetary reimbursement. The cost of the drive is not the primary concern... it's the data loss.
Ok, my recommendation... go with the industry leader Seasonic. There are other R E L I A B L E power supplies out there. With a little research and a few more dollars... A bad power supply can kill your entire system. I was fortunate it was only the hard drive (insert angry mumbles) and power supply.

Suddenly shut down gaming one day. After trying to turn the computer back on, it popped and the lights flickered. Computer works with a different power supply. Power supply unit stinks of burnt electronics. After disconnecting it and using the included power supply tester, the fan did not spin up after flipping the switch off and on again. I'm attempting to start the RMA process, but this happened Friday night. They require a support ticket to have been filed, which takes 1-2 business days for a response per their website. Even with their cross-shipping option, it seems like it'll be over 10 days before I can get a replacement considering processing and shipping as well.

Arrived and set it up perfectly, even rearranged my cables so they were ultra managed, cleanest you'll ever see. Thing is, I was an idiot and decided to PSU test it AFTER managing my cables, when I found the fan wouldn't start. Ofc I checked and Eco mode was off, it was plugged into the wall, not a power strip, the fan just wasn't starting. To be 100% sure, I used the PSU took with my previous power supply and it started perfectly. To be 200% sure, I plugged everything into the motherboard, when I got a split second of a white light for my CPU and then nothing. Power button? Nothing. Everything was routed properly because it got to POST with my old power supply afterwards. I'll be trying a new motherboard wire soon just in case it's just that, but more than likely the supply itself just bricked when it first plugged.
