5.0 out of 5 starsSo Far So Good - Purchased During Black Friday 2019
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2020
*Update 09/30/2021*
Still working like a dream. Haven't had a single issue since day one and I game and video edit heavily so it's running for most of the day every day.

If you're like me, you've seen this thing floating around on lists in places like LinusTechTips forums etc, and it's rankd pretty darn low compared to a lot of other PSUs. It's enough to make you second guess ever buying one of these things. Well it went on sale during black friday and for the price, an 850W 80+ Gold fully modular PSU? I couldn't ignore it. I closed my eyes tightly and clicked "ship". Been using this thing ever since. I never use eco mode. Seems unnecessary since the PSU isn't noisy to begin with and I'd rather just know it's always keeping itself as cool as possible. It came packaged like a champ, lots of extra cables and straps included. Cables are all black so that's nice. My only gripe is that the cables are a little stiff. They're built tough as hell for sure, but they could have been more flexible. I've had to route cables in ways I would have preferred not to for the sake of tidiness but the cables just couldn't bend enough to do what I originally planned. Still, god quality cables nonetheless. Love the green design of the fan cover and the green LED when it's on. If I ever run into issues I'll come back here and give it a proper thrashing but as of now, It's been handling my rig well with no issues.

1.0 out of 5 starsWarranty ONLY If They Can Sell Your Info

So, to get the warranty, you have to go online and register the product. However, to get to the registration page you have to not only make an account but also must " accept the processing of my personal data as set out in EVGA's Privacy Policy."

That is HARD BS and I will not be buying any more PSU's from EVGA. You give a warranty when a customer buys a product, you don't shoehorn in stuff like this. Completely ridiculous. Will be returning without a doubt.

2.0 out of 5 stars It worries me... and I was right.

When I first powered it on, there was a failure to boot and arcing sounds. I thought it shorted on something and killed my new 3090ti and my mobo. It seems fine now, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it.

Before anyone asks, yes, I took the extra steps to ensure that I was grounded for the whole installation process. I wear thick nitrile gloves and wore a grounding wrist strap that had direct contact with my flesh. It was plugged into the ground socket. I also used the cables it came with, knowing that the old cable from the other PSU isn't rated for the output of this PSU.

On another note, my room began to really reflect the summer temperature after the first use. About 30 minutes after switching the PSU off, the room returned to normal temperature. I noticed a green light from the PSU that faded when I turned it off. Something was running and generating heat. Nothing else in the rig was running. I hope these are just teething issues, but it's still an anomaly amongst the many PSU's I've had over the years. (Maybe something actually did get shorted??)

What really matters is that it works. It provides the high fidelity gaming I sought after I did a reverse C-Section for the 3090ti into my rig. (Serisouly, that thing is massive!)

Update: It went kaput. Turns out the arcing sounds I heard was dead on the money. The fact that it worked at all for my 3090ti is a miracle. When I installed my new mobo, cpu, and ram, it refused to power on. This time, not even my hard drives could get enough power. I'm giving it a second try with a replacement, but there won't be a third should it fail immediately again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Noisy when using graphics card
Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2022

Works, but it's rather loud as soon as I start drawing a bit more power with my graphics card. My card consumes ~220W of extra power and the PSU is LOUD! (fan is not defective, it just spins fast). This could be ok, but it feels like the PSU also suddenly spins up as soon as CPU/GPU load spikes temporarily like when I open a web page, making it suddenly be noisy for a second out of nowhere-- it really has no delay. When it's idle, it's quiet. Also, it feels rather hot when idle. It feels like it's heating up a long more than other power supplies I've had.

2.0 out of 5 stars Be Careful!!!!
Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2022

While the PSU is pretty good the instructions provided are mixing something super important. This PSU will not work at all of you use your old motherboard cable. If you replace some cables and not all of them you’ll fry some components. Most important lesson is to always use extensions on a build. Otherwise you’ll have to reword everything when upgrading or replacing a PSU.

Most of these DOA reviews are just people thinking the cables are universal like a hdmi or Ethernet cable. I returned 2 units before learning that. Then I replaced all of what I considered the ‘important’ cables. Surely I could leave the old sata power cable in place. Wrong!! Blew out a SSD and a couple of fans.

I can’t express how angry I was. EVGA isn’t the only offender. Corsair leaves this out too. I’m sure plenty of builders know this but too many don’t.

2.0 out of 5 stars EVGA QC at an all time low
Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2021
Size: 750WStyle: G5Pattern Name: Power SupplyVerified Purchase
I've been with EVGA for quite a bit now, but this will be my last purchase from the company. I bought the 850w G5 to replace my 650w G2. Install was straight forward, cable quality was nice (Though, not sure why they didn't include a 6 pin VGA cable with their PSUs even though a majority of their cards are 8PIN + 6PIN. Like, they have an 8 pin with detachable 2 pin, but I don't want it just hanging in my case.)

Anyway, on to the issue. Coil whine. This PSU has a MASSIVE issue with coil whine. Happens in CSGO and Cities Skylines. Case sites desk level with back end facing in my direction and I can't play without headphones on. The noise is reminiscent to someone slowly dragging their nails on a chalkboard. I can hear the frequency change in the power supply as a scroll in and out of view in Cities Skylines. As soon as I quit to desktop, silence. Guess I lost the lottery on this PSU and lost my patience with the company.

Specs:
AMD 3700x stock clocks
Arctic Liquid Freezer II AIO cooler
MSI x570 Gaming Edge WiFi
EVGA XC3 2080 SUPER

Also, on the off chance that someone important at EVGA reads this: your fan controls on the 2080 SUPER was poorly designed. Google search "EVGA 2080 super fan click" and you'll find wide spread issues of the GPU hard coded to stop and start the fan @ 55c. The ONLY way to combat this is to have Precision X1 open and running at all times with a custom curve. Why not give the option to save fan curves to the cards on-board memory? Terrible decision.

I gave this a 2 star since I feel like most people ignore 1 stars for excessive whining. If you care about quiet and efficient PSUs, go with a different brand. I'll be ordering a Corsair PSU and returning this when I get the new one installed.

Hopefully you get your QC sorted, EVGA. Because you were once a great company.

2.0 out of 5 stars COIL WHINE!
Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2022

Got this psu to go along with my evga 3080ti figured i would get a 1000watt so I would have more than enough. Ever since the first time i powered it on the unit makes a constant scratching electrical noise which sounds like a mechanical hard drive ticking away which ive come to find out it is coil whine and it comes down to luck. Not saying all of these power supplies will do this but just wanted to put it out there that mine did and I am returning it, the coil whine is audible over the fan noise it increases with load very annoying. I ended up buying a corsair hx850 which is more than enough to run my card and everything else and its a platinum rating has no coil whine either.
This power supply has awesome cables though and a cool glowing evga logo on the back the corsair has short cheap looking cables sadly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cables provided are too short for a dual cpu system

I’m unable to use this power supply because the cables provided are too short to support a dual cpu motherboard. Although the PSU has two slots labeled for CPUs to be powered. I sent a request for functional cables to EVGA and am pending a response. Once I am able to use the product I will update my review.

Be mindful of the cable length you need before purchasing this PSU.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dead After 3 Months

My PSU went faulty after three months of use. It kept shutting off randomly and causing my computer to become unstable. It once shut down during a BIOS update and I thought my computer was toast. Luckily, it had survived but it was close. Go with another brand. EVGA PSU's already starting off on a bad foot. I'd say go with a Corsair or a Seasonic PSU.

2.0 out of 5 stars CAUTION: You can lose all your data in a blink of an eye if you use the wrong cable.
Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2017
Size: 550WStyle: G3Pattern Name: Power SupplyVerified Purchase
Yeah, I'm going to be that guy who gives a low rating for something that people will claim is my fault. Admittedly, I'm partially to blame (maybe 2%), but, due to EVGA's negligence, I've lost 2 terabytes of priceless, crucial data. EVGA needs to exercise at least a bare minimum effort to warn their customers about something so simple that can literally fry ALL of your hard drives and files in 1 second, which is exactly what happened to me.

I'll give the warning that EVGA for some reason couldn't: If you are moving from a Corsair PSU to an EVGA PSU, do not, under any circumstance, use the SATA cable from your Corsair PSU. They look identical - literally identical. The pin layouts are identical. The shapes of the plugs are identical. The length and arrangement of cables are identical. But, internally, they are wired differently. If you use the Corsair SATA cable to wire your hard drives, it will physically burn your hard drives.

I have three hard drives, and a single cable is plugged into all three. Instead of unplugging all three, I simply kept them plugged, and snapped the end of the cable into the EVGA PSU. After all, the plug is shaped identically to the hole, and it clicks right in. Well, my two mechanical hard drives started smoking and fried like burnt eggs. Interestingly, the solid state hard drive did not (this is a common outcome based on what I've read since the solid state drives are powered differently and avoid this issue).

Sure, I could have figured out this was going to absolutely hose my hard drives in advance. Sure, I could have been a little more thoughtful. But, honestly, how is an average person supposed to know that? There's no warning, no label on the cable, no sticker in the box that says not to use other cables, no slipsheet with a stop sign, no warning tape, no nothing. In fact, the instruction manual itself doesn't even mention that you should not use other cables. (edit: yes it does, in microscopic red text). And, when the cables look quite literally identical, there is simply no way an average person could know that they are not interchangeable. It's like giving you a power extension cord and expecting you to know that it can only be used with certain electronics, but not others.

This is not an outlier issue. TONS of people have had this happen to them. There are articles about it. There are forum posts all over the place. Yet, EVGA has done nothing to remedy this.

I lost 2 terabytes of the most sensitive and critical family information, photos, videos, history, wedding photos/videos, full archives of children's pictures and videos, vacations, massive amounts of financial documents, scanned mortgage info, resumes, old and current work product, mementos, items of extreme sentimental value, and the list goes on. I idiotically backed one of the drives up with the second, but housed them in the same computer. Both drives are now fried, and everything has been lost. F---.

2.0 out of 5 stars Received a defective unit, got a full refund. All other hardware unaffected.

The unit I received was defective. From the moment I turned it on, the coil whine was awful. I didn't think too much of it and tried to boot the PC I built. The breaker flipped after a few seconds. I turned everything off, unplugged all the power cables, and tested the PSU on it's own with the testing plug supplied by EVGA. The fan didn't spin in non-eco mode, so I knew the PSU was the issue. All other parts of the PC work fine, and everything worked perfectly after I got a new PSU. I did receive a full refund for the DOA PSU, no questions asked. Great customer service EVGA. EVGA typically makes great products, so I don't know what went wrong here. Replaced the dead PSU with another EVGA one, and everything worked fine.
