How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent lens

This Z 40mm f2.0 prime lens is a great value. I find that 40mm on my full-frame Nikon Zf mirrorless camera is a great option for my "walkaround" photography. It's not "wide-angle" it's not "telephoto", it's right in the middle where many photos are taken. It's small and light weight so it's easy to tote around if you want to switch with a wide or tele lens. I bought the standard edition as the SE version was not available at the time. They are the same lens except for the "old-fashioned" look of the SE version. That was not an issue for me. Also the SE model is more expensive. I'm very pleased with the sharpness and clarity of my images. The manual focus ring is smooth and accurate. The build quality is good and everything looks well-assembled. It's a great price and value for the results I'm getting. I'm really glad I bought it.

1.0 out of 5 starsRating is for the dishonest way Amazon handles returns!
Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2022
Lens okay but not that great. However the biggest problem was with the return. Amount was refunded to a gift card when I had indicated I wanted it refunded to the credit card. Now there is nothing they can do. The only way to get my money is to purchase more from Amazon. Amazon is dishonest. Done forever with Amazon! Amazon has been telling me lies for weeks. I have wasted my money! Beware of Amazon and their fraud in regards to issuing credit on purchases!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp and versatile, Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is a must-have prime lens.
Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2023

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 lens exceeded my expectations in every way. Its large aperture of f/2 allows for stunning low-light performance and beautiful background blur, adding a professional touch to my photography. The 40mm focal length strikes a perfect balance between wide-angle and portrait, making it versatile for a variety of shots. Whether capturing crisp details or achieving creamy bokeh, this lens delivers exceptional image quality. Its compact and lightweight design makes it an ideal companion for any photography adventure. I'm thoroughly impressed with the results I've achieved using the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 lens, and it has become a permanent fixture in my camera bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight Powerhouse!
Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2023

I bought this lens while looking for a prime lens for some video work. The 2.8 aperture is perfect in low light and the image quality for such a small, inexpensive, lightweight lens is incredible. Value in price, quality in performance. The mount is plastic but after 6+ months of regular use I honestly don’t even notice. It produces super sharp and clean images and really shines shooting B-Roll with video on my Z6ii. Highly recommend especially if the 50mm 1.8z is a bit too much for you. This lens outperforms it’s price point.

Love this lens. Beautiful bokeh and fast focus. Super light you barely notice it’s there. It’s a fun lens to just go out and about with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compact Lens With Limitations
Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2023

Given the price, this and the 28mm f2.8 are the most affordable lenses in Nikon's Z lineup. I prefer the more zoomed-in, compressed and subject-isolating nature of the 40mm, which is a nice compromise between the traditional 35mm and 50mm. You can find plenty of reviews out there detailing all the technical specifications and performance capabilities of this lens, so I'll keep my review brief.

I think this makes an excellent walk-around lens, and makes carrying a Z body more fun and laid-back feeling compared to the larger, heavier, more serious and professional S-line lenses (which are great for when you want perfect, pixel-peeping sharpness, better bokeh and very little coma or CA, etc.). This lens holds its own however. The main thing you have to work around in order to get the most out of this little gem is to avoid taking close-up shots with the aperture wide-open, as you will find the result soft, murky and cloudy. If your subject is five feet or less away, stop down to f5.6 to f8.0 (its sweet spot) and your subject will be very satisfyingly sharp and the depth of field still very effective. Save f2 for when your subject is far away enough, preferably using f2.8 if you can for more sharpness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice low cost fast lense for indoor shooting
Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2023

I use this with my Z 50 for shooting indoors without a flash. The focal length with the Z 50 APC size sensor works out well, and the short depth of field at f2 results in a nice clean blur in the background. The kit zoom lenses that come with the camera are very good, but this lens really completes the set.
