Bought 2 of these things. One for me, one for her. Takes a long while to heat up. After being plugged in, it requires some sort of weight to actuate a micro button switch. Sometimes it takes a full mug of coffee, and then won't actuate again. Sometimes it only takes an empty mug. Other times, a partial mug will do the trick.

Our solution? We decided to use bigger and heavier mugs. Oddly, now the thermal plate works better. It may be that the 'new' mugs conduct heat better from the bottom.

I was disappointed at how long it took to heat up a luke-warm cup of coffee. It will keep a hot cup up to temperature, but isn't strong enough to heat up cooler cups. If they put a potentiometer or rheostat control on it to allow the user to adjust the heating level, it would be a better product.

Bought this for work mostly for the safety feature

I mostly bought this for work because of the safety feature. The one I have at home requires me to turn it on/off manually. I wanted something that would shut off automatically in case I forgot when I left the office. This unit uses weight to determine when to turn on. There is a button on the bottom that when pushed in, the heating element starts up. As long as you remove your mug when it is empty (as you should anyway to prevent burning) it will always shut off. I have only used ceramic mugs so far but the weight mechanism should still register other types of cups that are safe to use on direct heaters. The charging option is convenient but if you have your own rapid charger use that instead as the charging option on the unit is slower and at lower voltage. If this doesn't bother you then by all means use it. The unit does not need to be "on" to charge only plugged in to a power source.

So, first of all, it works and works really well. Remember that happens because the plate gets hot. It’s only activated when a cup is on it, causing a button on the bottom to depress and activate. But remember that anything that puts weight on? It will activate it. I melted the iPhone case when I inadvertently set it on. And hadn’t thought about writing a review until I burned my thumb after trying to unplug it when I was done with the use of it for the day. I would leave it unplugged unless you need it activated and after you unplug it, give it time to cool.
