4.0 out of 5 starsSIMPLE FUN SONGS TO ENJOY
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 31, 2022
I could give 5 stars but it is a little weak. I am very happy with this CD album. It was a surprise that I did not know was out and I ordered it right away. Sure I can see why the record company did not think it was good enough to release in 1968. It is a bit dated but then so are so many of the other summer of love type songs. Yes some will see the SGT Pepper rip off to some degree but the songs are enjoyable and they sound well recorded and mastered. Stereo is nice and if you like it there is mono also. I recommend it if you like Elton John early years.

HALL OF FAMEVINE VOICE
3.0 out of 5 starsElton’s never before released debut.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 9, 2022
Originally released as part of RSD 2021, “Zippo” remains an artifact of its time but it is a fascinating one; imagine if Elton John had made a truly psychedelic record. Imagine no more. Held back from release byDJM and Elton, this 1968 album looks backward rather than forward having all the hallmarks of psychedelic music of the time from fuzz guitar to harpsichord.

Elton’s musical sense and his arrangement ability are already in evidence but Bernie Taupin’s lyrics had yet to evolve beyond the more pretentious juvenile rhythms that marked all of his early work with Elton. Here they dominate and are the weakest link of the compositions.

Caleb Quayle, who would appear on Elton’s early albums before Davey Johnston joined Elton’s band, appears and even co-writes one song here.

The CD includes both the mono and stereo mixes of the album.

Quite an enjoyable album of this then innovative new pop sound of the late 60s. Elton's signature sound is present but with Toytown Pop, Baroque Pop, Soul Pop and English Music Hall throughout the album. A great record collector's item to have.

Just Received in the mail & added to my Collection of Vinyl making it to 3,147 pieces in my Inventory. Yeah, Record Store day had it in MONO. Forget about That! This recording from 1967/68, Needs to be Heard in STEREO! Elton John's "Regimental Sgt. Zippo" a tip of the Hat to The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper! Elton was only 19 years old a young lad & a very talented teen. Get it while you can. It will make you happy. Peace & 💖 Oh, Lp is heavy 180 gram & Imported from Germany. It's on the DJM Label. In closing, my thoughts of why this recording was shelved for decades varies, as to how close it applies to Sgt. Pepper which was Released in May 1967 & could have been a conflict of interest. Well, Who knows?

4.0 out of 5 stars This album NEEDs to be in your Elton collection, in a good way

So you like Elton John? You must because you came to read my comment and I thank you for that. I must say this in the beginning: this album was a missed opportunity for the label. I really enjoy this latest (debut) album which never came out for some reason. As I write this I’m listening to the STEREO mix of the albums (13-24). Last time I heard a bit of the MONO (1-12) mix. Like I said in my Intro I thank you for reading my review of this great album. If this helped you because you were on the fence about the album. As a side note I was would to for all hard-core Elton recommend “Jewelbox” part of that particular boxset you can hear demos from these early songs.

Every song on this album works. Elton John has downplayed this album in interviews... but it's honestly one of his best. "When I Was Tealby Abbey" is quite the earworm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential early Elton
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 13, 2022

If you're a fan of early Elton, this set of late 60s recordings is an essential purchase. Though clearly the work of a developing artist, it is a delightful and often whimsical set of songs, full of memorable moments. While the set is definitely of its time in some respects, I am already finding myself humming some of these tunes after listening a few times, and the depth and melodicism that would lead him to mass popularity a few years later is well in evidence here. As good as these songs are, you have to wonder why it took this long for them to become widely available, but we can be glad that it finally happened.

This was supposed to be Elton John's first album but was initially scrapped in favor of "Empty Sky". The songs on this CD are very basic but show the talent that John and Taupin will bring to the future sound of Elton John. The CD has 24 tracks on it - 12 in mono and 12 in stereo.

Yes, very Sgt. Peppery, but is that bad? Twenty-some years pre-25 O'Clock if like me you love their stuff. Very different from the "Elton John" album, but if you enjoy psychedelic sounds and Reg, you need this one in your collection.
